The reveal also gave no final title or platforms, so there is no confirmation that the game will launch in 2026. That year’s confirmed Middle-earth release date belongs to the film The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, not the game.
What Warhorse has confirmed
Warhorse Studios described its project as an “open world Middle-earth RPG.” The studio’s announcement, reproduced by GameSpot, said: “We’re excited to tell you more when the time is right.”
That confirms the game’s broad genre and setting, but the announcement did not identify a final title, platforms, retail editions, or a release year. It also did not give a date for its next update. Any more specific launch window would be speculation.
Why 2026 is being confused with a game release
Embracer announced that The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum was set for theatrical release in 2026. That date is for a film. It is not a release date for Warhorse’s RPG.

Is this the Amazon Lord of the Rings MMO?
No. The Warhorse RPG and Amazon’s previously announced MMO are separate projects. Amazon announced its project on May 15, 2023, describing it as a persistent-world adventure in early production, led by Amazon Games Orange County and planned for global publication on PC and consoles. The announcement did not give a launch date.
In May 2026, Game Developer reported that Amazon’s announced MMO had reportedly been cancelled. The report also quoted Amazon Games general manager Jeffrey Gattis saying the company’s creative team “continues to explore a compelling new game experience” based on Tolkien’s world. That statement does not confirm the MMO’s cancellation, nor does it establish that Amazon’s future plans are connected to Warhorse’s game.

What about The Lord of the Rings Online?
The Lord of the Rings Online is a separate, existing game. Its official notice gives a tentative 2026–2027 update schedule for its Angmar and Mordor Legendary Worlds. Those dates concern updates to that game, not the release of Warhorse’s RPG.

The available announcements do not establish that the Warhorse game is available to buy or preorder, or that it will receive a physical release. Asmodee has separately announced a Middle-earth tabletop program and named initial partners Sirius Dice, Stone Blade Entertainment, Game Toppers, Grand Gamers Guild, and Play To Z. Asmodee said those partners would share their plans and distribution details later; this is tabletop activity, not an announcement about the Warhorse video game.
