The safest way to start using Steam is: download the official client from Valve, use or recover one Steam account, verify its email address, enable Steam Guard, check a game’s requirements before buying it, then install and launch the game from your Library.
Steam is more than a download website. It is an account-based storefront, game library, download manager, updater, launcher, and community platform. A game purchased or activated on Steam is normally licensed to the account used for that transaction; signing into a different account will not make the game appear. This guide follows Steam’s current terminology and client paths checked on August 10, 2026.
Steam in one minute
Steam is Valve’s platform for buying, claiming, downloading, updating, launching, and managing PC games. It also provides friends and chat, reviews, Workshop content, cloud synchronization, remote streaming, parental controls, and access to Steam Families.
The important distinction for a beginner is that Steam is account-based. Your Steam Library is attached to your account, not to a particular computer. You can sign into that account on another compatible computer and see eligible games, but each game still has its own operating-system, hardware, launcher, anti-cheat, and online requirements.

#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
A Steam purchase is normally a non-transferable license associated with the account that bought or activated it, subject to Valve’s Subscriber Agreement and applicable policies. Steam does not generally transfer a game from one account to another.
- Install Steam from Valve’s official Steam page.
- Sign in to an existing account or create one. Recover an old account before making a second account.
- Verify your email and enable Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator.
- Check the game’s operating system, hardware, storage, controller, online, launcher, and Steam Deck requirements.
- Buy or claim the game, install it from Library, let updates finish, and launch it once while online.
Before installing Steam: check your device
Steam runs on several platforms, but the Steam store does not guarantee that every game works on every device.
| Device | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Windows PC | Usually the broadest compatibility. Check whether the computer is running 64-bit Windows and whether its CPU, graphics hardware, memory, and storage meet the individual game’s requirements. |
| Mac | Every game must be checked separately. macOS version, 64-bit support, Apple Silicon or Intel compatibility, graphics requirements, and third-party launchers can all matter. |
| Linux | Some games have native Linux versions. Others may run through Steam Play and Proton, but Proton is not a guarantee of compatibility, anti-cheat support, or reliable multiplayer. |
| Steam Deck | The Deck uses a Linux-based SteamOS environment and has its own compatibility ratings. A game’s Windows PC requirements do not tell the whole story on Deck. |
| Remote Play | A game can stream from a capable host PC to another supported device. This is different from installing and running the game locally. |
Steam ended support for 32-bit Windows systems on January 1, 2026. Existing installations may continue to work temporarily, but they no longer receive Steam updates or security support; 64-bit Windows 10 remains supported according to Steam’s documentation. Steam also ended support for Linux distributions using glibc older than 2.31 on August 15, 2025, and ended official support for macOS 11 Big Sur on October 15, 2025.
Read Valve’s current notices for Windows 32-bit support, Linux support, and macOS 11 support. Individual games may require a newer operating system, 64-bit Windows, a specific graphics API, Secure Boot, TPM 2.0, or another feature. Steam lists some of these requirements in its Secure Boot and TPM 2.0 guidance.

- Open store.steampowered.com/about by typing the address yourself or using a trusted bookmark.
- Select Install Steam.
- Download the installer for Windows, macOS, or Linux.
- Run the installer and follow the prompts.
- Sign in, or select Create a new Account.
- Complete email verification when Steam requests it.
Do not download a Steam installer from an advertisement, an unofficial mirror, a chat message, a Discord server, or a supposed support agent. Steam identifies steampowered.com, store.steampowered.com, steamcommunity.com, and help.steampowered.com as official domains in its account security recommendations.
The browser and mobile app can handle store purchases, account management, security approvals, and some remote-download tasks. They do not replace the desktop Steam client for ordinary PC game installation and launching. Valve’s Mac support documentation explicitly says the Steam application is required to play games purchased through Steam.
If account creation fails in a browser, Valve recommends creating the account through the Steam client. See Steam’s new-user information for the basic setup flow.
2. Use or recover the correct Steam account
The most common expensive mistake is creating a new account because a previously purchased game is missing. Do not buy the game again until you have checked which account originally owned it.

If an email address is already associated with a Steam account, use that account or begin account recovery rather than creating another one. Valve’s support page for an account already linked to a contact email address explains this situation.
Account name versus profile name
- Your Steam account name is the login identity. It is not necessarily the same as your public name.
- Your profile name is the name friends and other users see, and it can be changed.
- Changing your profile name does not create a new account or move your Library.
Use an email address you expect to keep for years. Verify it, add a phone number for recovery if you are comfortable doing so, and never share the account password. Steam is not intended for children under 13, and additional age restrictions can apply depending on jurisdiction; consult the Subscriber Agreement.
3. Secure the account before buying anything
Set up Steam Guard before spending money or adding valuable items to the account. A password alone is a poor defense against phishing, reused-password attacks, and malware.
Set up Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator
- Install the official Steam Mobile app.
- Sign in to the same Steam account.
- Open the Steam Guard tab.
- Choose Add authenticator.
- Confirm a phone number if requested.
- Save the recovery code somewhere secure and offline.
- Use QR-code sign-in or mobile approval when Steam offers it.
Steam Guard’s mobile authenticator generates a one-time code that changes every 30 seconds. The phone does not need an active internet connection to generate a code, but its clock must be accurate. Steam’s current mobile requirements list iOS 15.1 or later and Android 7.0 or later. See Valve’s pages for the mobile authenticator and recovery code and Steam Guard.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSecurity rules worth memorizing
- Steam Support will not ask for your password, CD key, login code, items, or a credit-card purchase through Steam chat, Discord, or a friend request.
- Never send an item, money, or authentication code to verify an account.
- Never follow an unsolicited Steam Support link.
- A friend’s account may itself be compromised, so a familiar name is not proof that a message is safe.
- Use a different strong password for Steam and for the email account that protects it.
If you suspect a compromise, sign out everywhere or deauthorize devices, change the Steam password, secure the associated email account, scan the computer for malware, and contact Valve through the official Steam Help site. Do not use a support link supplied by the suspicious message.

4. Learn the Steam client
Store
The Store is where you search for games, view prices and regional currency, read requirements and reviews, inspect editions and DLC, check controller and Steam Deck information, add games to your wishlist, and buy or claim titles.
Library
Library contains games and other software registered to the account, whether installed or not. Select a title to install or launch it. Right-click a game, or select its gear icon, to access management options such as Properties, installed-file verification, DLC, Workshop subscriptions, and moving or uninstalling the game.
Adding a non-Steam game creates a shortcut in the Library; it does not add a Steam license, unlock Steam achievements, or give the game Steam Cloud support.
Downloads
The Download Manager shows active downloads, updates, queued items, completed updates, download priority, scheduling, and bandwidth use. You can open it by selecting Downloads at the bottom of the Steam client, View → Downloads, or Library → Downloads.
Global download controls are under Steam → Settings → Downloads. The Steam download and update guide covers queue management, bandwidth limits, and scheduling.
Community and profile
Friends and Chat, game hubs, discussions, guides, reviews, broadcasts, Workshop, and your profile live in Steam’s community area. You do not have to make your profile public. Steam provides Public, Friends Only, and Private profile states, plus separate privacy controls for items such as your game details, inventory, and friend list. Adjust them through Steam’s profile privacy settings, documented here.
5. Choose a game without buying the wrong version
Do not judge a game solely by its screenshots, star rating, or sale price. Scroll through the complete Store page and check:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Operating system: confirm Windows, macOS, or SteamOS/Linux support for your device.
- Minimum requirements: these mean the game may run at low settings or reduced performance, not that it will run well.
- Recommended requirements: useful guidance, but not a performance guarantee.
- Storage: leave additional room for patches, temporary installation files, shader caches, and saves.
- Online requirements: distinguish an offline-capable single-player game from an always-online title.
- Third-party launcher: EA, Ubisoft, Rockstar, or another publisher may require a separate account and launcher.
- Controller support: full support is different from partial support, and neither guarantees that every controller works on every operating system.
- Steam Deck rating: important if you intend to play on a Deck.
- Early Access: the game may be unfinished and can change substantially.
- DLC and editions: compare the base game, deluxe or complete edition, season pass, soundtrack, and cosmetic bundles.
- Reviews: read recent reviews and the most helpful negative reviews. An overall percentage may hide current technical problems.
- Language and accessibility: check interface, subtitles, audio, remapping, text size, colorblind options, and other features you need.
Steam’s platform compatibility guidance explains why a game may not be available for a particular operating system. Always use the live Store page rather than relying on an old guide or a remembered screenshot.
Use the Wishlist
Add games you are considering to your Wishlist. It is useful for unreleased titles, saving games for later, and receiving sale notifications. Steam specifically recommends the Wishlist for sale alerts in its purchasing and billing FAQ.
Free-to-play is not the same as free-to-claim
A free-to-play game can be added without paying but may include optional purchases, subscriptions, or other monetization. A paid game temporarily offered for free may become part of the account permanently if you claim it during the promotion and the offer says so; do not assume every free trial works that way.
Free games and demos do not count toward the $5 spending requirement that unlocks certain Steam community features.
Recommended Free Tools
6. Buy or claim the game on the intended account
- Open the game’s official Steam Store page.
- Confirm the exact title, edition, platform, requirements, price, and any external-account requirement.
- Add the item to your cart.
- Choose Purchase for myself, or a gift option if you intentionally want another account to receive it.
- Select a payment method.
- Review the total, including applicable taxes where shown.
- Complete payment.
- Check the confirmation email and purchase history.
- Open Library and locate the game.
Buy on the account that should permanently receive the license. Buying on a family member’s or friend’s account does not make the game yours, and Steam purchases cannot normally be transferred later.
Payment methods and currencies vary by country. Steam Wallet funds are prepaid Steam balance, not a bank account or cash-equivalent balance outside Steam. Valve’s Subscriber Agreement describes the relevant account and Wallet terms.

It introduces powerful new features such as gyro settings, stick curve adjustments, and button-to-mouse mapping, giving you deeper customization and more control than ever before.
Why some new accounts cannot use every community feature
Steam places a limited-account restriction on certain social and community features until the account has spent at least $5 USD in the Steam Store, or the equivalent calculated using the exchange rate at the time of purchase.
Qualifying examples include:
- Adding at least $5 to the Steam Wallet.
- Buying one or more games totaling at least $5.
- Adding a Steam Wallet card worth at least $5.
- Buying a Steam gift worth at least $5.
These do not remove the restriction:
- Receiving a gift.
- Playing a free-to-play game or demo.
- Activating a retail product key.
- Adding a non-Steam shortcut.
- Playing a free weekend or promotional trial.
Limited accounts may be unable to send ordinary friend invites, vote on reviews or Workshop items, use the Community Market, trade community items, create public guides or groups, submit Workshop content, or create a Steam Family. See Valve’s current Limited User Accounts and Friends and Chat documentation.
7. Install the game and choose the right drive
- Open Library.
- Select the game.
- Click Install.
- Choose a Steam Library drive or folder.
- Check the required and available disk space.
- Start the installation.
- Monitor progress in Downloads.
- Wait until Steam reports that the game is ready.
- Select Play.
Manage Steam Library locations
Use Steam → Settings → Storage to view library drives, add a new library location, choose where future games are installed, and move installed games without downloading them again. On Windows, the documented default game directory is:
C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappscommon
An internal SSD is usually the simplest location for loading speed and compatibility. A secondary internal drive can hold a large library. An external drive is convenient but can introduce disconnection, permissions, performance, and connection problems. Steam specifically does not recommend installing the Steam client itself on an external hard drive because of possible performance issues.
Moving a game does not necessarily move its saves. Games can store saves in Documents, AppData, the game directory, or another developer-defined location. Before a major move or reinstall, back up the steamapps folder and separately protect important save files. Uninstalling a game removes local files but does not remove the account’s license; uninstalling Steam can remove local game content if you do not preserve the relevant folders. Valve’s guides cover moving Steam and games and uninstalling Steam.
8. Manage downloads and updates
Steam normally downloads game updates automatically according to its settings. In the Download Manager you can pause or resume downloads, reorder the queue, set a bandwidth limit, schedule updates, prioritize a game, and decide whether downloads continue while you play.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Per-game update choices are under Library → select the game → Manage → Properties → Updates. Steam documents these choices:
- Always keep this game updated
- Only update this game when I launch it
- High Priority — Always auto-update this game before others
Only updating when launching does not permanently bypass updates. Steam may require the update before starting the game. The option mainly gives you more control over when the download happens.
9. Launch the game and set up a controller
The first launch may install prerequisite components such as DirectX, Visual C++ runtimes, PhysX, or other game-specific files. Allow those installers to finish. If you cancel one or security software blocks it, the game may fail to start.
A Steam game may also open a third-party launcher. That is not automatically a Steam failure, but it can add another login, update process, privacy policy, offline limitation, overlay, controller issue, or account-linking requirement. The game’s Store page normally identifies this requirement.
Controller setup
Steam supports many Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo controllers, but support varies by game and operating system.
- Connect the controller before launching the game.
- Try USB first if Bluetooth pairing is unreliable.
- Install firmware updates where the controller manufacturer provides them.
- Check whether the Store page says full, partial, or no controller support.
- If the game displays keyboard prompts, inspect both the game’s controller settings and Steam’s per-game controller configuration.
- Remember that a controller can work in Steam’s interface but fail inside a game because the game, external launcher, or anti-cheat system handles input differently.
On Steam Deck, controller layouts can be viewed and edited from the game details page. Community layouts can also be selected from the controller settings. Valve’s Steam Deck basic-use guide covers this interface.
10. Steam Cloud: synchronization, not a complete backup
Steam Cloud synchronizes supported files between computers, but it is not universal and should not be treated as your only backup. The game developer decides whether and how Cloud is implemented. A game may have no cloud saves, or it may synchronize settings and only some save files.
Rank #4
- Multi-Platform PC Gaming Controller: Working with Switch, PC, Android, and iOS devices via Bluetooth, wired, and wireless dongle connections.
- Hall Effect Joysticks: Delivering enhanced recentering performance for smoother control and superior anti-drift capability. Plus, with anti-friction rings.
- 2-Way Trigger Lock: With trigger stops, gamers can toggle between short and long pull positions. Additionally, gamers can activate hair trigger mode by pressing M+LT/RT (triggers must be in the long pull position).
- 1000Hz Polling Rate: This ensures that your inputs are registered almost instantaneously, minimizing lag and maximizing your performance during competitive play.
- Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
Steam’s technical documentation says supported files are generally synchronized after a game exits and downloaded to another computer before the game launches. Cloud can be disabled globally or for an individual game.
For safer save management:
- Look for the Cloud feature or cloud icon on the game page.
- Let Steam finish syncing before closing the client.
- If a cloud conflict appears, inspect the dates and progress before choosing a local or cloud version.
- Keep manual backups of valuable saves, especially before installing mods, making a major update, moving drives, or reinstalling Steam.
Read the official Steam Cloud documentation for the technical limitations.
11. Prepare Steam for Offline Mode
Offline Mode does not let every Steam game run without an internet connection. It works only when Steam has stored the required credentials, the game files are complete, and the game and any external launcher support the offline situation.
Before losing internet access:
- Start Steam while online.
- Make sure Remember me is selected at login.
- Finish all Steam and game updates.
- Launch each game you intend to play offline once while online.
- Close the game normally.
- Open Steam → Settings → Security.
- Make sure Don’t save account credentials on this computer is not selected.
- From the Steam menu, select Go Offline.
Always-online games, games requiring an external launcher, incomplete installations, and titles with online authentication may not work. Offline Mode also prevents important client and game updates. Valve’s Offline Mode support page lists the preparation requirements.
12. Request a refund when a game is unsuitable
For most games and software applications, Steam’s standard refund rule is:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Request the refund within 14 days of purchase.
- Have less than 2 hours of playtime.
Valve says it will consider requests outside those conditions, but approval is not guaranteed. Approved refunds are generally issued within a week to the original payment method or Steam Wallet, depending on what is available.
Important refund exceptions
- DLC: generally refundable within 14 days when the base game has been played for less than two hours since the DLC purchase and the DLC has not been consumed, modified, or transferred.
- In-game purchases: Valve-developed purchases may be refundable within 48 hours if unused. Third-party games must opt in to this system.
- Pre-purchases: if playable before release, playtime counts toward the two-hour limit. If not playable before release, the 14-day period begins at release.
- Bundles: may be refundable when no item has been transferred and combined usage is under two hours.
- Third-party keys and Wallet cards: purchases made outside Steam are not refunded by Valve.
- VAC bans: a VAC ban removes the right to refund that game.
- Steam Wallet funds: funds bought on Steam may be refundable within 14 days if unused.
- Abuse: repeated refund abuse can lead Valve to restrict refund access.
Exact refund path
- Open help.steampowered.com.
- Select Purchases.
- Choose the purchase.
- Select the problem.
- Choose I’d like to request a refund.
- Select Steam Wallet or the original payment method when offered.
- Submit the request.
See Valve’s full refund policy and refund-request instructions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.13. Steam Families, game sharing, and children
Use the current term Steam Families. It replaces treating the older standalone Family Sharing and Family View labels as separate systems.
A Steam Family can contain up to six members and can be managed from the Steam client, mobile device, or web browser. Ownership remains with the account that bought the game. Each member has their own saves and achievements.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Sharing has limits:
- Not every game or DLC is shareable.
- One copy generally cannot be used by two family members at the same time; simultaneous play may require multiple owned copies.
- Different DLC ownership can affect access and save compatibility.
- A family member’s cheating or fraud while using a shared game can put family privileges or accounts at risk.
- Family members do not merge libraries or transfer ownership.
Invite only trusted household members and never share the account password. Valve’s Steam Families guide and Family support page contain the current eligibility and sharing rules.
Setting up Steam for a child
Give a child a separate Steam account rather than letting them use an adult’s account. Saves, achievements, playtime, and progress belong to individual accounts and cannot be transferred to a newly created child account.
Steam Families parental controls can manage game access, Store and community access, chat and social features, playtime limits, playtime reports, and requests for additional time or access. Steam’s age rules and local laws still apply.
14. Steam Deck compatibility
Steam Deck ratings are useful, but they are not identical to a PC system-requirements check. Valve uses these categories:
Best Value
- Platform Compatibility: This PC controller is designed for Windows PC, Steam, Switch, Android, and iOS. Xbox-style asymmetric stick layout for PC gamers. Three modes cover all your devices. Please check your device compatibility before purchase
- Three Connection Modes: 2.4G wireless, Bluetooth, wired USB-C. PC gets native XInput/DirectInput. Switch pairs via Bluetooth, no adapter. This gaming PC controller switches devices seamlessly. Stable wireless minimizes random disconnects during gaming
- Hall Effect Precision: Hall effect joysticks and triggers eliminate stick drift. This gaming controller for PC delivers smooth, responsive input with no dead zones. Built for FPS, racing, and action games. Long-term precision for competitive PC gaming
- Back Buttons & Battery: Two programmable back buttons map combos and shortcuts. Textured grips with dual vibration. 1000mAh battery delivers up to 20H playtime. RGB can be turned off. A solid PC controller for gaming with custom back buttons
- ABXY Layout Switch: Press B + Minus + Plus to swap between PC and Switch modes. Features: 1000Hz polling rate, RGB lighting, turbo. Note: designed without mic jack or gyro sensor
- Verified: works well out of the box.
- Playable: works but may require manual configuration.
- Unsupported: Valve does not currently consider it playable on Steam Deck.
- Unknown: Valve has not tested it sufficiently for a rating.
The assessment considers input, display, seamlessness, launcher behavior, and Proton or system support. Ratings can change as games, Proton, anti-cheat systems, and Steam Deck software change.
Unknown does not mean broken. Unsupported does not necessarily mean nobody can make the game run. It means Valve does not currently consider it supported or playable under its criteria. Similarly, Verified does not promise unlimited performance, perfect online services, or a bug-free experience after every game update. Check Valve’s Steam Deck Verified page and Deck software troubleshooting guidance.
15. Workshop mods and community content
Steam Workshop lets players discover, rate, and download player-created content for supported games. Depending on the title, subscribing to Workshop content may install maps, cosmetics, mods, scenarios, or other additions. Browse the Steam Workshop and follow each game’s instructions.
Mods can conflict with one another, require dependencies, break after a game update, alter saves, or prevent multiplayer compatibility. Before diagnosing a game:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Read the mod’s requirements and update history.
- Install major mod collections cautiously.
- Back up important saves.
- Disable or unsubscribe from mods to test the unmodified game.
- Do not assume a Workshop subscription is harmless just because Steam installs it automatically.
16. Remote Play and Steam Link
Steam Remote Play streams a game running on one computer to another PC, phone, tablet, TV, VR headset, or compatible device through Steam Link. The host computer must remain on and running Steam.
Remote Play Together lets friends join supported local-multiplayer games over the internet while one player owns and runs the game. It is game-dependent and may require a fast, stable connection.
Streaming is not the same as installing the game locally. Image quality, input delay, and reliability depend on the host computer, network, Wi-Fi, latency, and client device.
Common Steam problems and safe fixes
A game is missing from Library
- Confirm that you are signed into the account that made the purchase or activated the key.
- Check the purchase confirmation email and Steam purchase history.
- Clear Library filters.
- Check View → Hidden Games.
- Log out and sign in again.
- If the title says Pre-Load Complete, confirm that the account owns it and has not merely accessed it through Steam Families.
Use Valve’s missing games support page before buying another copy.

- Check whether another update is occupying the queue.
- Restart Steam.
- Check the network, firewall, VPN, and security software.
- Use Steam → Settings → Downloads → Clear Download Cache.
- Sign in again after clearing the cache.
Clearing the download cache does not remove installed games, but Steam will require another login. Valve documents this process here.
The game will not launch or is stuck on Preparing to Launch
- Restart the computer.
- Update the operating system and graphics drivers.
- Compare the computer with the game’s system requirements.
- Use Verify integrity of game files.
- Allow DirectX, Visual C++, PhysX, and other prerequisite installers to complete.
- For diagnosis, temporarily disable nonessential overlays, monitoring tools, antivirus features, or input software.
- Check whether a third-party launcher or anti-cheat system is failing.
- Contact the game developer for game-specific problems after completing Steam’s basic checks.
Valve’s support guidance for games that do not run after Preparing to Launch and games that are currently unavailable covers prerequisite installers and additional checks.
Verify the game files
- Open Library.
- Right-click the game or select its gear icon.
- Choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
Steam may report that one or more files failed verification because some are local configuration files. That can be normal. Verification replaces damaged or missing installation files; it does not generally restore unrelated save data. Valve’s instructions are available here.
The game is unavailable on the operating system
- Check the Store page for operating-system support.
- Check both operating-system and hardware requirements.
- On macOS, 32-bit games do not run on Catalina or later.
- On Linux, determine whether the game is native Linux or being run through Steam Play and Proton.
- If a Steam purchase is incompatible with the computer, consider requesting a refund rather than assuming an unofficial workaround will work.
The controller works in Steam but not in the game
- Connect it before launching the game.
- Try USB instead of Bluetooth.
- Close other controller-mapping tools and overlays.
- Check the game’s controller support label and in-game input settings.
- Try Steam’s per-game controller configuration.
- Check whether an external launcher or anti-cheat component is intercepting input.
Offline Mode fails
Confirm that you launched the game online at least once, completed updates, enabled saved credentials, and closed Steam normally before going offline. An always-online title or a game whose external launcher needs authentication may not work offline.
Recommended Free Tools
A save has disappeared or Steam Cloud shows a conflict
Do not immediately choose a synchronization option. Check which local and cloud version has the newest date and progress. Confirm that Steam Cloud is enabled for the game, then look for saves outside the Steam installation directory. Keep independent backups because Cloud synchronization is not a complete backup system.
You think the account has been compromised
Do not negotiate with the person contacting you. Use the official help site, deauthorize devices or sign out everywhere, change the Steam password, secure the email account, scan the computer for malware, and review account activity. If you entered credentials on a suspicious page, change the email password too.
Beginner checklist
- Installed Steam from Valve’s official website.
- Used or recovered the correct Steam account.
- Verified the email address.
- Enabled Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator and saved the recovery code.
- Checked the game’s operating system and hardware requirements.
- Checked storage, controller, online, external-launcher, and Steam Deck requirements where relevant.
- Bought or claimed the title on the intended account.
- Installed it from Library to the correct Steam Library drive.
- Waited for Downloads to finish.
- Launched it once online.
- Tested the controller and graphics settings.
- Confirmed saves and Steam Cloud behavior.
- Prepared Offline Mode only if needed.
- Kept the refund deadline in mind.
The Bottom Line
For a low-risk first Steam session, use one long-term account, secure it before buying, inspect the entire game page before checkout, and install from Library rather than manually downloading game files.
