a0004058.dll Is Missing: Restore the Jet Database Component

a0004058.dll is missing because an older application cannot load a Microsoft Jet database component. The file is associated with Microsoft Jet Paradox ISAM, a legacy driver that allowed Jet-based software to read Paradox database files.

The safest repair is usually to identify the application showing the error and repair or reinstall that application from its original installer. Do not download a0004058.dll from a random DLL website or copy it into System32.

What a0004058.dll is

Item Verified information
File a0004058.dll
Internal description Microsoft Jet Paradox Isam
Product Microsoft Jet
Publisher Microsoft Corporation
Role Legacy Paradox database component
Known version and size Not established
Original filename Not confirmed

“ISAM” means Indexed Sequential Access Method. In this case, the component relates to the Paradox database driver used by some older database programs and business applications.

The filename requires caution. Jet’s commonly documented Paradox driver is generally named msrd3x40.dll, so a0004058.dll may be a renamed, extracted, installer-generated, or application-specific copy. The filename and description alone cannot prove where it came from.

A normal current Windows installation should not be assumed to contain this file as a standalone system DLL. It is more likely to have been supplied by the older application that is failing.

Identify the application before repairing anything

Before replacing files, record the program that displays the error and the complete message. Common Windows loader wording includes:

  • “The program can’t start because a0004058.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “a0004058.dll was not found.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because a0004058.dll was not found.”
  • “a0004058.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

These are standard Windows loader variants. Their appearance does not, by itself, prove which application originally supplied the file.

Ask these questions:

  1. Which program or game shows the message?
  2. Does the error appear when Windows starts, when opening a shortcut, or only when opening a database?
  3. Did the problem begin after an update, reinstall, antivirus event, cleanup utility, disk failure, or move to 64-bit Windows?
  4. Is the application installed from original media or an unofficial repack?
  5. Does the program use Paradox databases, Borland Database Engine, Microsoft Jet 4.0, DAO, or Access?
  6. Is the application likely to be 32-bit?
  7. Does the vendor installer offer Repair, Modify, Verify files, or a legacy database runtime?

The answer determines whether you need an application repair, a vendor runtime, or Windows component repair.

Check where the file is expected

The location matters more than the filename. A file in the application’s own folder is usually an application-private dependency. A file in a temporary extraction folder may belong to an installer. A file in antivirus quarantine may have been removed after detection.

Check the application folder

  1. Right-click the program’s shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. On the Shortcut tab, read the Target field.
  4. Select Open File Location if available.
  5. Look for a0004058.dll in that folder and its subfolders.

Do not replace the file yet. First note the complete folder path and whether the file is present.

Check common Windows locations

In File Explorer, inspect these locations only for diagnosis:

  • C:WindowsSystem32
  • C:WindowsSysWOW64
  • %TEMP%
  • %LOCALAPPDATA%Temp

On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system components, while SysWOW64 is used for many 32-bit system components. The names are confusing, so do not move a DLL between them based only on the folder name.

Check antivirus quarantine

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Look for an event involving the application folder or a0004058.dll.
  5. Record the detection name, original path, and action taken.

Restore a quarantined file only when the application came from trusted original media and the installer or vendor can establish that the file is legitimate. Reinstalling the application is safer because it restores the complete, matching set of files.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the application

This is the most likely and safest fix.

Use the Windows repair option

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  4. Find the program that reports the error.
  5. Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the program on Windows 10.
  6. Choose Advanced options if shown.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Start the application again.

If the program has no repair button:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs.
  3. Select Programs and Features.
  4. Select the affected application.
  5. Choose Change, Repair, or Modify if available.
  6. Follow the installer prompts.

If the error remains, back up the application’s documents, database files, profiles, and license information. Then uninstall the application and reinstall it from its original disc, downloaded installer, or vendor-supported source.

Do not delete application data unless the vendor’s instructions specifically require it. Older database programs may store important files in the installation directory or a separate data folder.

How to tell whether this worked

The repair succeeded if:

  • The application opens without the DLL message.
  • Its database or project files load normally.
  • The same error does not return after restarting Windows.
  • The application’s own repair or file-verification process reports no missing files.

If the installer completes but the error returns, the program may be missing a separate Jet, DAO, BDE, or Paradox prerequisite. Continue with the next section rather than copying a replacement DLL.

Fix 2: Install the application’s correct database prerequisite

Older software often bundles its own database engine. Some programs instead expect a Microsoft Jet or Access Database Engine runtime to be installed separately.

Check the application manual, original installation media, vendor support page, or setup folder for terms such as:

  • Microsoft Jet 4.0
  • DAO
  • Paradox
  • ISAM
  • BDE
  • Access Database Engine
  • ACE
  • Database runtime

Microsoft provides official pages for the Access Database Engine 2010 Redistributable and Access Database Engine 2016 Redistributable.

These packages are not verified substitutes for a0004058.dll, and neither should be assumed to contain that exact filename. Install one only when the application vendor documents it as a prerequisite.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Match the application architecture

Most older Jet-based applications are 32-bit, even when they run on 64-bit Windows. The database runtime must match the application’s architecture, not simply the architecture of Windows.

To check a running program:

  1. Start the application if possible.
  2. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  3. Select Details.
  4. Right-click a column heading.
  5. Choose Select columns.
  6. Enable Platform if your Windows version provides it.
  7. Look for the application’s 32-bit or 64-bit designation.

Some Windows versions instead identify 32-bit programs with a suffix such as (32 bit) in the Processes tab.

Office installations can also create conflicts between 32-bit and 64-bit database-engine packages. Follow the application vendor’s instructions instead of installing several Jet or ACE versions at random.

How to tell whether this worked

The prerequisite installation worked if the application starts and can open its database without a new provider, driver, or architecture error.

If installation fails because another Office or database-engine version is already present, do not force the installation. Record the exact message and consult the application vendor’s compatibility instructions.

Jet 4.0 is legacy technology. A newer ACE package is not automatically a drop-in replacement for every Jet, DAO, or Paradox application.

Fix 3: Restore a file removed by antivirus

If Protection History shows that the application’s file was quarantined, first verify the program’s source.

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Open the relevant event.
  5. Check the original path and detection details.
  6. Do not choose Allow on device unless the application installer and vendor establish that the file is genuine.
  7. Prefer repairing or reinstalling the application from trusted media.

If antivirus repeatedly removes the file after reinstalling:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Leave protection enabled.
  • Scan the installer and the installed application.
  • Obtain a clean installer from the vendor.
  • Ask the vendor to confirm the file’s hash and signature.
  • Remove an unofficial repack rather than creating a permanent antivirus exclusion.

The fact that a file is named like a Microsoft component does not prove that it is from Microsoft. A hash, full path, digital signature, and known-good installer are needed for meaningful verification.

Fix 4: Check whether the file is signed and identify its hash

This step helps distinguish an application file from a suspicious replacement.

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Right-click the DLL.
  3. Select Properties.
  4. Open the Digital Signatures tab if present.
  5. Select a signature and choose Details.
  6. Check whether Windows reports that the signature is valid.

A missing signature does not automatically prove malware, especially for old application components. It does mean you should rely on the original installer or vendor confirmation.

To calculate a hash:

  1. Right-click the Start button.
  2. Select Terminal, PowerShell, or Windows PowerShell.
  3. Run:
Get-FileHash "C:fullpatha0004058.dll"

Replace the path with the actual file location. Save the result and compare it with a hash supplied by the application vendor. Do not treat an unexplained copy from another computer as a known-good file.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components when Windows itself may be damaged

SFC and DISM repair Windows components. They generally do not restore a DLL that belongs privately to a third-party application.

Use them when other Windows files are also failing, Windows Update is damaged, or the problem began with broader system corruption.

Run DISM

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the command to finish.
  2. Restart Windows.

Run System File Checker

After restarting:

  1. Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
  2. Run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the affected application.

Success means SFC or DISM reports that it repaired Windows components and the application now starts. If the application still reports a0004058.dll, reinstall the application. Do not assume these commands will recreate an application-private Jet file.

Manually repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make diagnosis harder. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs attention, while repairs are performed by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to that program.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For Microsoft’s own procedures, see the System File Checker guidance and DISM repair documentation.

Fix 6: Update Windows and check compatibility

A migration to Windows 11, a major Windows update, or a move from 32-bit to 64-bit Windows can expose problems in old database software.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install applicable updates.
  5. Restart when prompted.
  6. Test the application again.

If the application is old, check whether its vendor provides a Windows 10 or Windows 11 compatible release. Avoid compatibility-mode changes until you know the application’s requirements.

If the failure began immediately after a known update, use Microsoft’s Windows recovery options. Create a backup first. Recovery may remove recently installed applications or updates, depending on the option selected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 7: Update or reinstall related drivers only when evidence points there

A database DLL is not normally a device driver, so Device Manager is not the first repair location. Use it only when the application also reports hardware, storage, printer, or display problems, or when the failure followed a hardware migration.

  1. Right-click the Start button.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category related to the suspected hardware.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if prompted.

To reinstall a device driver:

  1. In Device Manager, right-click the device.
  2. Select Uninstall device.
  3. Confirm only if you have a replacement driver or Windows can reinstall it.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Test the application.

Do not uninstall unrelated devices simply because a0004058.dll is missing. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show which ones need attention, while installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace the application vendor’s Jet prerequisite.

Windows Features: what to check and what not to assume

Some older programs require a Windows optional feature, but enabling features at random will not normally restore a0004058.dll.

To review available features:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type:
optionalfeatures
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Review the list without changing anything.
  3. Enable a feature only when the application vendor specifically requires it.
  4. Select OK and restart if Windows requests it.

Do not assume that enabling .NET Framework, legacy components, or another optional feature installs Microsoft Jet or the Paradox ISAM driver. The required component must come from the application installer or documented Microsoft prerequisite.

Why regsvr32 usually does not help

regsvr32 registers certain ActiveX controls and COM DLLs. A runtime or database-driver DLL is normally loaded by the application and does not become functional merely because it was registered.

Do not run:

regsvr32 a0004058.dll

unless the application vendor specifically instructs you to do so. Registration can produce a misleading error, especially when the DLL has the wrong architecture or is not a self-registering COM component. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation explains the command’s intended use.

Best Value

If reinstalling does not solve the error

The named DLL may be present while one of its dependencies is missing.

Work through these checks:

  1. Confirm that the installed application matches the Windows architecture it supports.
  2. Check the application folder for duplicate or renamed database DLLs.
  3. Review antivirus history again.
  4. Run the application’s file verification or repair function.
  5. Check Windows Event Viewer for an application error at the same time as the failure.
  6. Use a reputable dependency-analysis tool to identify missing secondary components.
  7. Use process-monitoring logs to determine the exact path Windows tried to open.
  8. Contact the application vendor with the complete error text, application version, Windows edition, file path, and hash.

If the error started after disk damage or a migration, check the disk and event logs, then restore the application from a known-good backup or original installer.

What not to do

  • Do not download a0004058.dll from a random DLL download sites site.
  • Do not copy the file from another computer.
  • Do not replace files in System32 or SysWOW64 merely because the message names them.
  • Do not assume the file ships with Windows.
  • Do not assume Access Database Engine 2010 or 2016 contains this exact DLL.
  • Do not install multiple Jet or ACE versions without checking application compatibility.
  • Do not repeatedly disable antivirus protection.
  • Do not use regsvr32 as a general DLL repair command.
  • Do not expect SFC or DISM to restore a third-party application’s private file.

A downloaded DLL can have the wrong version, wrong architecture, missing dependencies, or malicious modifications. The safe sources are the affected application’s original installer, its vendor-supported runtime, or an official Microsoft database-engine package explicitly required by that application.

FAQ

Is a0004058.dll a Windows system file?

It is associated with Microsoft Jet, but its presence as a normal current Windows system file is not established. Treat it as an application dependency until the owning program and path are identified.

Is a0004058.dll malware?

The name alone cannot prove that. Verify the source, path, digital signature, hash, and installer. An unofficial copy should not be trusted merely because its description says “Microsoft Jet Paradox Isam.”

Should I download the DLL separately?

No. Repair or reinstall the application first. A standalone download may not match the application’s architecture or dependencies and may introduce malware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will Access Database Engine fix the problem?

Not necessarily. Microsoft’s Access Database Engine packages are possible prerequisites only when the application vendor requires them. They are not verified substitutes for this exact filename.

Do I need the 32-bit or 64-bit package?

Use the architecture required by the application. Many older Jet-based programs are 32-bit, even on 64-bit Windows. Installing the wrong architecture can leave the original error unchanged or create an Office conflict.

Can SFC repair this file?

Usually not if the DLL is private to the application. SFC and DISM repair Windows components; the application’s installer normally restores application files.

Why does regsvr32 fail?

The DLL may not be a self-registering component, or the command may be using the wrong architecture. Database-driver DLLs are generally loaded by the application rather than manually registered.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the final repair when every step fails?

Identify the owning application, obtain its authentic installer, back up its data, remove the damaged installation, and reinstall the vendor-supported version and prerequisites. If the failure continues, provide the vendor with the full path, error text, architecture, signature details, and hash.
