aac.dll Missing: Rebuild the Nero AAC Component Safely

aac.dll is an old Ahead Software AG AAC codec component, not a Windows system file. If Windows reports that aac.dll is missing, the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the Nero or other multimedia application that originally installed it.

This file belongs to AAC Dynamic Link Library (MPEG-4) and is commonly associated with older NeroVision, Nero Recode, and related Nero video and audio tools. The commonly indexed build is a 32-bit aac.dll, version 2.5.1.1, with an approximate size of 0.79 MB. Those details help identify the component, but they do not mean every file with this name is identical.

Do not begin by copying a downloaded DLL into C:WindowsSystem32. That can install the wrong architecture, bypass the application installer, and leave the actual codec dependencies or registry information missing.

What aac.dll does

AAC is an audio codec used in MPEG-4 processing. Older Nero applications used their own codec and plugin components for tasks such as video conversion, disc authoring, transcoding, and media playback.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Historical Nero installations placed related files in application directories, including locations similar to:

C:Program FilesCommon FilesAheadAudioPlugins

The exact folder varies by Nero generation, Windows architecture, language, and installation choices. A file named aac.dll in a Nero plugin directory is very different from a same-named file copied into a Windows system directory.

The file is not required for Windows to boot. Windows does not normally need it for Explorer, the desktop, Windows Update, or ordinary system operation. The error usually appears only when a particular multimedia application or leftover Nero helper attempts to load the codec.

Error messages you may see

The Windows loader can display several versions of the same underlying problem:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • “This application failed to start because aac.dll was not found.”
  • “The program can’t start because aac.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because aac.dll was not found.”
  • “There was a problem starting aac.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “Error loading aac.dll.”
  • “aac.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
  • “The procedure entry point could not be located in aac.dll.”

The phrase specified module could not be found needs special attention. It can mean the visible aac.dll is missing, but it can also mean that one of its dependent files is missing or incompatible. Reinstalling a single DLL may therefore leave the error unchanged.

Before repairing anything, identify the caller

The most important first step is finding the program that is requesting aac.dll.

Check the error dialog

Look at the window title and the text around the error. It may identify an executable such as a Nero application, video editor, startup helper, or an old shortcut.

Write down the executable name before closing the dialog. Repairing Windows globally is unnecessary if only one old application is affected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check Event Viewer

  1. Press Win + X.
  2. Select Event Viewer.
  3. Expand Windows Logs.
  4. Select Application.
  5. Look for an error recorded at the time the aac.dll message appeared.
  6. Open the event and check Faulting application name and Faulting module name.

If the failing executable belongs to Nero, repair Nero first. If it belongs to another old multimedia program, repair that program instead. If the error appears during startup but no application is visible, check old shortcuts, startup entries, scheduled tasks, and leftover Nero utilities.

Fix 1: Repair the application that needs aac.dll

Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes

This is the highest-probability fix because aac.dll is an application codec, not a Windows component. A repair operation can restore the missing plugin together with companion files, installer metadata, and required configuration.

Windows 11 and Microsoft Store-style applications

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find the application named in the error.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  6. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Start the application again.

The Repair option normally keeps the application’s data while replacing damaged program files. If the error remains and the page offers Reset, do not use Reset until you understand what application data it may remove.

Traditional Nero desktop installations

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Enter:

text
appwiz.cpl

  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select the relevant Nero product.
  3. Choose Repair, Change, or Modify, depending on what the installer provides.
  4. Keep the AAC, MPEG-4, video, and audio components selected.
  5. Complete the wizard.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Launch the application that produced the error.

If the repair completes successfully, the application should start without the aac.dll message and its audio or video functions should load normally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If there is no Repair option, continue with a reinstall from the original vendor. Use Nero Start or an official Nero installer for the same product edition where possible. Do not use a standalone DLL download as a substitute for the application package.

Fix 2: Reinstall the complete Nero or multimedia package

Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes

A missing codec often means the original installation was interrupted, partially removed, or cleaned by another program. Reinstalling the complete application restores more than the visible DLL.

  1. Back up Nero project files, profiles, serial numbers, and personal settings.
  2. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Uninstall the Nero product or other application named in the error.
  4. Restart Windows when prompted.
  5. Download the installer from the application vendor’s official support or account portal.
  6. Install the same edition and, where possible, the same architecture as the original application.
  7. Choose the full multimedia, MPEG-4, AAC, or video-processing components.
  8. Restart Windows again.
  9. Test the application with the operation that previously failed.

If the installer asks whether to keep settings, retaining them is usually reasonable. If a previous installation was badly damaged, a clean installation may be more reliable.

Do not assume that installing a current Nero product will automatically repair an unrelated legacy Nero executable. The program generating the error must be identified first.

Fix 3: Remove a damaged old Nero installation before reinstalling

Time needed: 20 to 40 minutes

Normal uninstallers sometimes leave files, registry entries, or shared components behind. This matters when multiple Nero generations have been installed on the same PC.

Nero provides an official cleanup utility called FirstAidKit for removing traces of previous Nero programs. Use it only after backing up serial numbers, account details, project files, and other personal Nero data.

  1. Uninstall Nero normally from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, if possible.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Obtain FirstAidKit from Nero’s official support instructions.
  4. Close Nero applications and other media tools.
  5. Run the cleanup utility as instructed by Nero.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Install the required Nero product again from its official installer.
  8. Test the application before restoring optional plugins or third-party codec packs.

This process is appropriate when reinstalling appears to succeed but the same old aac.dll error returns. It is not necessary for every missing-DLL message.

Fix 4: Check whether antivirus removed the file

Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes

Security software may quarantine an old codec if its behavior or packaging looks suspicious. That does not prove the file was malicious, and it does not prove a quarantined copy is safe to restore.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review entries from the time the error began.
  5. Open any event mentioning Nero, the affected application, or aac.dll.
  6. Note the detected path, publisher, and action taken.

Protection History keeps recent events for a limited period, so check it soon after the problem appears.

If the original application and publisher are clearly identified, the file was installed from a legitimate vendor package, and the detection is confirmed as a false positive, you can follow Microsoft’s restore or allow instructions. Do not restore an isolated DLL simply because the filename matches. Reinstalling the complete application from the vendor is safer and also restores companion files.

If the detection identifies malware or an unknown publisher, leave the file quarantined, run a full scan, and reinstall the application from its official source.

Fix 5: Check architecture and dependencies

Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes

The commonly indexed aac.dll build is 32-bit. A 32-bit DLL cannot load into a 64-bit process merely because the filename is correct. Conversely, placing a random 64-bit replacement beside a 32-bit Nero application will not solve the problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the application architecture rather than only the Windows architecture:

  • A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows needs its 32-bit codec components.
  • A 64-bit application needs a compatible 64-bit build.
  • A DLL from another Nero version may export different functions.
  • A same-named file from another publisher may be unrelated.

If Windows says the module cannot be found even though aac.dll is visible in the application folder, a dependency may be missing. Reinstalling the complete application is the correct first response.

Handle Microsoft runtime errors separately

If the error also names a file such as MSVCP*.dll or VCRUNTIME*.dll, install the appropriate Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable from Microsoft’s supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.

Match the package to the application:

  • 32-bit application: install the x86 package.
  • 64-bit application: install the x64 package.
  • ARM64 application: use the ARM64 package.

Installing Visual C++ does not replace aac.dll. It helps only when a Microsoft runtime is also missing or damaged. Several Visual C++ generations can coexist, so do not remove unrelated versions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes, plus restart time

DISM and System File Checker repair Windows component corruption. They normally do not recreate a third-party Nero codec, so use these commands when other Windows symptoms exist as well, such as damaged system features, update failures, or unexplained application-loading problems.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Select Run as administrator.
  4. Run:

  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Run:

text
sfc /scannow

  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the original application again.

If SFC reports that it repaired files, retest after restarting. If it reports that it could not repair some files, follow Microsoft’s DISM and SFC repair procedure and then repair the application itself.

Repeating SFC will not manufacture a missing Nero plugin. If the Windows scan is clean and only Nero fails, return to the Nero repair or reinstall path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When you are manually repeating SFC and DISM without knowing which component changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it finds; its free scan identifies issues, while repair is handled by the full version, and reinstalling Nero remains the definitive fix for this application-specific DLL.

Fix 7: Update related media drivers only when the symptom points there

Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes

aac.dll is not a hardware driver. Updating a graphics, sound, chipset, or optical-drive driver will not normally recreate it. Driver work is relevant only if the application also crashes around a device, playback path, capture card, sound output, or hardware encoder.

Check Device Manager

  1. Press Win + X.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category related to the symptom, such as:
  4. Sound, video and game controllers
  5. Display adapters
  6. DVD/CD-ROM drives
  7. System devices
  8. Right-click the affected device.
  9. Select Properties.
  10. Check the General tab for a device status error.
  11. Open the Driver tab and note the provider and version.
  12. Use Update Driver only when a newer driver is available from the PC, motherboard, graphics, audio, or device manufacturer.

Restart Windows and test the application. If Device Manager reports no device problem and the only message is aac.dll missing, reinstall the application instead.

Manually hunting through several hardware vendors to find a compatible driver can be tedious when the real problem is unrelated codec packaging. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify stale drivers; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version, and it should not replace reinstalling the Nero application when that is the actual cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 8: Do not register aac.dll with Regsvr32

Time needed: 1 minute

Do not use this as a default repair:

regsvr32 aac.dll

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. An AAC codec library is not automatically a COM or ActiveX component, and there is no evidence that this file should be registered manually.

Microsoft documents regsvr32 as a tool for registering DLL-based components, not as a general missing-DLL repair method. If you run it against a codec that does not support registration, you may receive an error without changing the application’s installation.

Fix 9: Use System Restore when the timing is clear

Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes

System Restore is useful when aac.dll stopped working immediately after a driver installation, application removal, update, or system change and a suitable restore point exists.

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Enter:

text
rstrui.exe

  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point created before the error began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs, if available.
  5. Review the changes.
  6. Start the restore.
  7. Let Windows restart and complete the process.

System Restore can remove a damaged application change, but it is not a replacement for a clean Nero installation. If the error remains, repair or reinstall the application from its official source.

Fix 10: Remove stale startup references

Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes

If Nero has already been removed but the message appears every time Windows starts, an old helper may still be launching.

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Disable an unmistakable old Nero entry.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Check whether the message returns.

Also inspect Task Scheduler for clearly identified Nero tasks:

  1. Open Start and type Task Scheduler.
  2. Open Task Scheduler Library.
  3. Look for entries that clearly belong to the removed Nero installation.
  4. Check the action path before disabling anything.
  5. Disable only entries you can identify confidently.

Do not delete random tasks or registry entries. If the executable path points to an application that is still installed, repairing that application is safer than disabling its helper.

Common causes and the matching fix

Likely cause Best response
Incomplete Nero installation Repair or reinstall the complete Nero product
Partial removal or multiple Nero versions Use Nero FirstAidKit, restart, then reinstall
Antivirus quarantine Check Protection History and verify provenance
Wrong DLL architecture Install the application’s matching codec component
Missing dependency Reinstall the complete application and address any named runtime
Windows component corruption Run DISM, then SFC
Stale startup helper Identify and disable the leftover entry
Malware or modified replacement Scan the PC and reinstall from the vendor

Why random DLL downloads are a bad fix

A standalone download can be:

  • The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
  • A different version intended for another Nero release
  • A file from another publisher with the same basename
  • Missing companion libraries such as aacenc32.dll
  • Modified, bundled, or unsafe
  • Placed in a directory the calling program never searches

Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, a game folder, or a random application directory can create version conflicts. It also bypasses the installer’s file registration, configuration, and dependency handling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safe sources are the original application’s official installer, Nero Start, Nero’s official support download process, and Microsoft’s official pages for Windows components or Microsoft runtimes. For this file, restoring the complete application is safer than restoring the isolated DLL.

FAQ

Is aac.dll a real file?

Yes. Public metadata identifies aac.dll as AAC DLL, part of AAC Dynamic Link Library (MPEG-4), associated with Ahead Software AG. The commonly indexed record is a 32-bit version 2.5.1.1 file, but not every same-named file should be assumed identical.

Is aac.dll a Windows file?

No. It is a third-party application codec associated historically with Nero multimedia software. Windows does not need it to start.

Which programs use it?

Older NeroVision, Nero Recode, and related Nero MPEG-4 or AAC processing components may request it. The exact caller is determined by the executable named in the error.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I copy it to System32?

No. It is not normally a system component, and copying it globally can introduce architecture and version problems.

Should I install Visual C++?

Only when the error also names an MSVC runtime such as MSVCP*.dll or VCRUNTIME*.dll. Visual C++ Redistributable does not replace aac.dll.

Why does the message say the module cannot be found when the DLL exists?

A dependency may be missing, the DLL may be incompatible, or the application may be searching a different directory. Repairing the complete application addresses these possibilities better than copying another DLL.

Can I use regsvr32?

Normally no. aac.dll is a codec library, not automatically a registration-based COM component. Reinstall the application instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the application is very old?

Current Windows versions may expose compatibility problems with legacy Nero software even after the file is restored. If a clean vendor installation still fails, use the application’s compatibility options, contact vendor support, or migrate the project to maintained software rather than collecting individual DLLs.

What if reinstalling Nero does not help?

Identify the exact executable still calling the file. Check Event Viewer, antivirus Protection History, startup entries, scheduled tasks, architecture, and any dependency named in the error. A stale helper may be launching after Nero was removed, or the visible aac.dll may be present while a companion file is missing.
