It is not an effortless fit for everyone: some mechanics are left unexplained, and solo players may find the workload overwhelming. The game supports solo play as well as co-op for up to six players.
What kind of game is Abiotic Factor?
Abiotic Factor is a survival-crafting game set in a secret underground research facility after a catastrophic containment breach. You play as a GATE scientist, scavenging workplace supplies, crafting equipment, establishing a base, exploring the complex and planning an escape while facing paranormal entities and other threats. The mix of everyday research-facility surroundings and strange sci-fi dangers gives exploration much of its appeal. Steam’s game page lists single-player, online co-op, LAN co-op and cross-platform multiplayer, with support for one to six players.
What do critics think of Abiotic Factor?
The reviewed critic consensus is favorable, though the available scores represent a small group of reviews rather than every critic’s view. Metacritic lists an 88 PC Metascore based on four critic reviews, a live aggregate snapshot accessed October 7, 2026; the score and review count may change. PC Gamer’s Morgan Park awarded the game 92/100 in a review published July 22, 2025. That is one critic’s evaluation, not a guarantee that every player will share the same experience.
What reviewers praise
Critics highlight the unusual setting, atmosphere, progression and the pleasure of discovering how the facility works. PC Gamer describes a long-form adventure built around facility exploration, crafting, base building and expeditions into strange dimensions. The survival systems and escalating discoveries give players reasons to return to earlier areas and prepare for new ones.

Co-op is another central strength in the reviews: coordinating jobs and exploring together can produce memorable, unpredictable stories. Morgan Park’s PC Gamer verdict calls it “an unforgettable interdimensional odyssey with you and your closest friends.” An XboxEra review, as quoted in Metacritic’s listing, describes it as “a refreshing and charming take on the survival genre” and praises its mechanics, world and play with friends. These are individual critical assessments, not evidence that co-op is required.
What reviewers flag
Metacritic’s review summaries warn that several mechanics are not explained clearly, so players may have to experiment or work things out as they go. They also note that solo play can feel overwhelming without companions. If polished, top-tier graphics are your main priority, the game may be less compelling: its strongest critical case is its atmosphere, systems and emergent play, not a promise of visual spectacle.

Is Abiotic Factor good solo?
Yes, solo play is an official option; co-op is not mandatory. The trade-off is workload. On your own, you handle the scavenging, crafting, base upkeep and exploration without companions to share jobs or help when an expedition becomes difficult. That can make the experience more demanding, particularly when the game leaves a mechanic for you to discover. Metacritic’s critic summaries specifically note that solo play may feel overwhelming.
If you enjoy learning systems through experimentation and managing a survival game at your own pace, solo is a supported way to play. If you want a lighter workload or value the group stories reviewers praise, co-op may suit you better.

Is Abiotic Factor worth playing with friends?
Co-op is a strong reason to consider the game if your group enjoys survival crafting and exploration. The game supports up to six players, and sharing tasks can make the facility’s workload more manageable. The appeal is not only practical: reviewers point to the unscripted adventures and surprising situations that come from exploring and solving problems together.
It is still a survival-crafting game, not simply a linear co-op story. Your group should be comfortable with scavenging, crafting, base building and learning some systems through trial and error. Steam lists online and LAN co-op as well as cross-platform multiplayer; those listed features do not establish performance or feature parity on every platform.

Steam displayed 96% positive from 28,954 English-language user reviews when accessed October 7, 2026, and 95% positive from 645 recent reviews at that time. They offer additional player sentiment but should not be treated as a substitute for the smaller critic sample or as a measure of sales, player count or playtime.
