If Abiotic Factor keeps crashing on your Steam Deck, work through system updates, background apps, compatibility settings, graphics options and the game installation in that order. These are diagnostic checks drawn from general Steam Deck support and the game’s own PC troubleshooting advice—not seven guaranteed fixes. The available guidance does not establish one Proton version that is best for this game.
1. Update SteamOS and restart the Deck
Start with the system itself. Steam Support recommends installing available system updates and restarting when investigating instability. After the restart, launch Abiotic Factor again before changing other settings; this gives you a clearer read on whether the update or reboot helped.

2. Close third-party desktop applications
Applications installed through Desktop Mode can run alongside a game. Steam Support recommends exiting or disabling third-party applications when investigating app instability. Close any you have running, return to Gaming Mode, and test the game again.

3. Check the game’s current Deck compatibility information
Open Abiotic Factor on its Steam store page and check its current Steam Deck compatibility information. Steam’s Verified categories describe how well a game works on Deck; a Playable or Unsupported result can indicate requirements or limitations to consider. Ratings can change, so rely on the live listing rather than an older report.
4. Compare the default configuration with a forced Proton tool
Proton is Valve’s compatibility layer for running Windows games on Steam Deck. Valve notes that compatibility can include game-specific bugs or performance problems, so changing the compatibility tool is a reasonable diagnostic step, not proof that Proton caused a crash.

- In Gaming Mode, open Library and select Abiotic Factor.
- Open the game’s Properties, then Compatibility.
- Enable the option to force a specific Steam Play compatibility tool and select the latest Proton version available.
- Launch the game and note whether the crash behavior changes. If it gets worse, return to Compatibility and disable the forced tool to test the default configuration again.
The general Steam guidance is to try the latest Proton tool; it does not identify a best Abiotic Factor-specific version.
5. Reduce graphics load
Steam Support recommends lowering the graphics preset or reducing individual settings when addressing performance or stability issues. If you can reach the game’s graphics menu, lower the preset first, then reduce demanding individual options if crashes continue. Change one group of settings at a time so you can tell whether the result changes.

6. Verify the game files, then consider reinstalling
The game’s published troubleshooting advice recommends validating Steam files or reinstalling for relevant game problems. Verify the installation first; if that does not help, consider reinstalling through Steam. Neither step is a guaranteed cure for every Deck crash.

7. Use the DX11 option or test a clean install only when relevant
Try DX11 if you are investigating graphics compatibility
The game’s troubleshooting post offers Play Abiotic Factor (DX11 for Lower-End PCs) as a launch option for lower-end systems. If that option appears in Steam when you start the game, it is worth testing as a conditional graphics check. The post does not describe it as a Steam Deck-specific fix.

Remove mods if they may be involved
The same post notes that mods may be unsupported and suggests clearing files and reinstalling when the method used to install mods is unknown. If you use mods, test without them; when their files cannot be identified or removed reliably, a clean reinstall can help determine whether the modified installation is involved.

Abiotic Factor’s Steam listing says it runs on Unreal Engine 5 and publishes Windows PC requirements: 8 GB RAM minimum and 16 GB recommended; minimum graphics examples are GeForce GTX 1660 or AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT, with GeForce RTX 3070 or AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT or better recommended. The listing also notes higher CPU requirements for hosting multiplayer. These are published PC specifications, not a Steam Deck benchmark or a minimum Deck specification.
