Reach the Abyssal Woods through a hidden passage in Shadow Keep, then pass through Darklight Catacombs. Inside the woods, Torrent cannot be summoned, and the area’s warnings make stealth the safest way forward. The optional Abandoned Church detour adds the map and three Scadutree Fragments before you head west to the waterfall and south to Midra’s Manse.
Spoiler warning: The final sections reveal the route through Midra’s Manse and identify Midra as its endpoint.
How to reach the Abyssal Woods
The route begins at Shadow Keep’s Main Gate Plaza and leads through Castle Watering Hole and Darklight Catacombs. The passage is easy to miss because it uses a concealed wall and a coffin rather than a normal exit.
- At Main Gate Plaza, take the gate on the right. If it is locked, follow the longer route around the left side.
- Continue along the upper route past the small enemies and burning boats. Climb down the ladder to the flooded section.
- Pass through the waterfall and descend the second ladder. In the room beyond, strike the wall to the right of the red painting to reveal a hidden passage.
- Use the coffin beyond the concealed wall to travel to Castle Watering Hole.
- Head south from Castle Watering Hole. Use Torrent to cross the cliffs where necessary, then enter Darklight Catacombs south of the river.
- Complete Darklight Catacombs to emerge in the Abyssal Woods.
This route is described by PowerPyx’s June 21, 2024 walkthrough; the Abyssal Woods area reference also identifies Darklight Catacombs as the access route.

How to move through the Abyssal Woods safely
Use the Abyssal Woods Site of Grace as your hub. Torrent is unavailable in this area; the in-game message reported by the area reference reads, “The spectral steed is frightened and cannot be summoned.” That reference also lists warnings including “Hide yourself. Make not a sound,” “Crouch in the undergrowth,” and “Don’t let it see you.” Treat these as practical stealth cues, not a guarantee that every encounter behaves identically.
- Crouch and use grass or other cover to avoid being seen.
- Follow the established paths and detours rather than rushing through exposed ground.
- Do not assume sprinting is safe or that every Aging Untouchable must be fought; this route focuses on evasion.
The area reference quotes the warning “Once you are seen, there is no escape” and says “Combat is not an option.” These messages reinforce the stealth approach, but they are in-game warnings rather than a tested account of every possible enemy interaction.
Optional detour: the Abandoned Church, map, and Scadutree Fragments
The church detour is useful if you want the Abyssal Woods map and the Scadutree Fragments described by the route guide before continuing to Midra’s Manse. It takes you farther through the woods and near the Aging Untouchables’ trail, so keep using cover.
- From the Woods grace, head south toward the Abandoned Church. The route guide recommends approaching from an elevated line east of the Aging Untouchables’ trail rather than cutting directly south.
- At the church, collect the two Scadutree Fragments described in the guide.
- Pick up Map: Abyss from the stele outside the church entrance, by the road in the southeastern corner. The map reveals the Abyssal Woods area.
- Return to the Woods grace, then travel north past inquisitors to a corpse by a tree for another Scadutree Fragment.
The Map: Abyss reference places the stele outside the Abandoned Church. Its item description calls the location “A thick forest sprawls at the depths of the ravine that is untouched even by sunlight” and describes it as the known sanctum of Sage Midra, forbidden by the Hornsent. That wording is the in-game item description, not an independently established geographic claim. From the Woods grace to the waterfall
When you are ready to continue, return to the Woods grace and take the western route along the other Aging Untouchable trail. Continue until you reach the waterfall. The route guide describes the area by the waterfall as safe; from there, travel south to Midra’s Manse.
Spoilers: the essential route through Midra’s Manse
Spoilers for Midra’s Manse and its endpoint. The Manse uses concealed walls and levers to open the route onward. The essential progression described in the guide is:
- Find and strike the illusory wall behind a painting.
- Use the lever revealed beyond it to expose a ladder to the upper level.
- Descend through the library and open a door into the main hall.
- Find the second concealed painting route and use its lever to continue.
- Follow the shelf route and proceed toward the boss area.
A ladder-and-chandelier detour leads to a Revered Spirit Ash, and the guide also distinguishes optional enemy encounters from the required route. Those are not necessary to describe the essential progression. Midra is the optional endpoint of the Manse section, rather than a required step for entering the Abyssal Woods.
