accelerometerdll.dll Won’t Load: Repair HP DriveGuard Safely

Length9 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

accelerometerdll.dll is a genuine HP file, not a normal Windows component. It belongs to HP Mobile Data Protection, the user-mode part of HP 3D DriveGuard, which works with the HP Mobile Data Protection Sensor to protect a notebook’s hard drive during sudden movement or impact.

The safest fix is to remove the damaged or outdated HP 3D DriveGuard installation, restart, and install the package offered for your exact HP model and Windows architecture. Do not download the DLL by itself or copy it into System32.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

What accelerometerdll.dll does

HP 3D DriveGuard communicates with the notebook’s motion sensor and helps park hard-drive heads when the computer is dropped or abruptly moved. The DLL is one part of that software package. It is not supplied by Windows, DirectX, .NET, Visual C++, or a game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The error may appear as:

  • AccelerometerSt.exe - System Error
  • The code execution cannot proceed because accelerometerdll.DLL was not found
  • The program can't start because accelerometerdll.DLL is missing from your computer
  • HP Accelerometer is not supported in this version of Windows
  • A message naming AccelerometerSr.exe

The executable, sensor driver, and supporting files must agree with one another. Restoring only the missing DLL can leave the actual driver or startup component broken.

Fix 1: Reinstall HP 3D DriveGuard for your model

Time needed: 15–30 minutes

This is the most likely solution, especially if the message started after a Windows feature update, BIOS update, factory reset, or hard-drive replacement.

1. Find the exact HP product number

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type msinfo32 and press Enter.
  3. Note System Model and System SKU if shown.
  4. Also note whether Windows is 64-bit:
  5. Open Settings.
  6. Select System.
  7. Select About.
  8. Check System type.

The model name alone may not be enough. HP often publishes different 3D DriveGuard packages for different product numbers. Do not automatically install the newest SoftPaq you find.

2. Remove the existing package

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Enter appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select HP 3D DriveGuard, HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection, or a similarly named HP protection package.
  5. Select Uninstall.
  6. Follow the prompts.
  7. Restart Windows.

If the package is not listed, continue with the HP installation rather than trying to delete random DLL files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Download the correct HP package

Open HP’s official support page, enter the exact product number, and select the driver downloads for your installed version of Windows. Look for HP 3D DriveGuard, HP Mobile Data Protection, or HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection.

Match all of the following:

  • Exact HP model or product number
  • Windows 10 or Windows 11, when HP provides a separate listing
  • 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
  • The package’s supported models and release notes

HP has published several package families, including older releases identified by SoftPaq numbers such as SP64144, SP81142, SP81920, SP82228, and newer model-specific packages. These are examples, not universal recommendations. A package that works on one HP notebook can be wrong for another.

Run the downloaded HP installer as administrator:

  1. Right-click the SoftPaq file.
  2. Select Run as administrator.
  3. Complete the installation.
  4. Restart the computer again.

How to tell whether it worked

After restarting, the startup message should be gone. Open Device Manager and expand System devices. Look for HP Mobile Data Protection Sensor. If it appears without a warning icon and the error no longer returns, the package is functioning.

Fix 2: Repair the sensor driver binding in Device Manager

Time needed: 10–20 minutes

Sometimes the HP program is present, but Windows is not binding the sensor to the correct driver.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type devmgmt.msc.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Expand System devices.
  5. Find HP Mobile Data Protection Sensor.
  6. Right-click it and choose Update driver.
  7. Select Browse my computer for drivers.
  8. Choose Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.
  9. Select Have Disk.
  10. Browse to the folder where the HP SoftPaq was extracted.
  11. Open the package’s InstallFilesWin10accelerometer folder when that path exists.
  12. Select the available driver file and complete the installation.
  13. Restart Windows.

The folder names can differ between HP packages. Use the extracted driver folder from the package intended for your model rather than a driver copied from another computer.

If the sensor is missing entirely, expand Other devices and look for an unknown device or a device with a warning icon. If no sensor appears anywhere, the package may not support that model, the sensor may not be present, or the installation may still be incomplete.

Manually checking HP’s model page and repeating driver installation can be slow when several versions are listed. Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan that shows which drivers are stale; the repair or driver installation is completed by the full version, while the exact HP model package remains the definitive choice for this component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine

Time needed: 5–10 minutes

Security software can quarantine a file after an update or after an HP installation changes. This is not proof that accelerometerdll.dll is malware.

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review recent detections.
  5. Open any entry that names accelerometerdll.dll, AccelerometerSt.exe, or an HP installation folder.

Restore the file only when all of these conditions are satisfied:

  • The file is in an expected HP installation location.
  • The detection is associated with the official HP package.
  • The package and its publisher can be verified.
  • A current security scan does not identify the surrounding installation as dangerous.

If you are unsure, leave the file quarantined and reinstall 3D DriveGuard from HP instead. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random DLL website.

Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

Time needed: 15–30 minutes

DISM and System File Checker repair protected Windows components. They usually do not recreate an HP DLL removed by an incomplete 3D DriveGuard installation, but they are justified if other Windows files are also failing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Type cmd.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test the HP component again.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If DISM reports that it cannot complete, install pending Windows updates, restart, and repeat the commands. If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, that does not rule out a broken HP installation.

Repeatedly running repair commands without knowing which component changed can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that identifies repair issues; the repair is completed by the full version, and reinstalling HP 3D DriveGuard remains the definitive fix for this specific DLL.

Fix 5: Do not use regsvr32 for this DLL

Time needed: 2 minutes

regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose the registration functions Windows expects. Ordinary application and driver support DLLs often do not self-register, and there is no normal HP instruction requiring accelerometerdll.dll to be registered.

Running a command such as this is therefore not a routine fix:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

regsvr32 accelerometerdll.dll

It may produce an error such as “The module was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.” That result does not identify the real problem. Repair the complete HP package instead.

Fix 6: Remove an obsolete HP startup entry

Time needed: 5–15 minutes

If you uninstalled 3D DriveGuard but Windows still displays an error for AccelerometerSt.exe or AccelerometerSr.exe, an orphaned startup entry may remain.

First confirm that you no longer need the sensor software. Removing the startup entry disables the leftover launch command; it does not repair a supported sensor installation.

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Look for Accelerometer, HP Accelerometer, HP 3D DriveGuard, or an unknown entry pointing to an old HP folder.
  4. Select the entry and choose Disable.
  5. Restart Windows.

If the entry is not visible:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Enter taskschd.msc.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select Task Scheduler Library.
  5. Look for an HP or Accelerometer task.
  6. Check its Actions tab before disabling it.
  7. Disable only a task that clearly points to the removed HP component.

Do not delete unrelated HP, Windows, or security tasks. If the sensor is still supported and present in Device Manager, reinstall the correct package instead of suppressing its startup process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent system change

Time needed: 15–45 minutes

Use System Restore when the problem began immediately after an update, driver installation, BIOS change, or recovery operation and no compatible HP package works.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select Next.
  5. Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
  6. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  7. Confirm the restore point.
  8. Select Finish.

System Restore rolls back system files, drivers, settings, and programs, but it does not remove personal files. After the rollback, install the correct HP package rather than permanently relying on the older system state.

Why this error appears

The usual causes are:

Cause What it means Best response
Windows feature update An older 3D DriveGuard release no longer works correctly with the updated system Remove and reinstall the model-specific HP package
BIOS update The sensor or its driver binding changed Check Device Manager and reinstall the HP driver
Factory reset The recovery image omitted or restored an incompatible HP component Install the package from the current HP model page
Hard-drive replacement The original HP software was not restored Install 3D DriveGuard for the exact product number
Wrong architecture A 32-bit and 64-bit package cannot be substituted freely Match the package to Windows and the model
Incomplete uninstall A startup executable remains without its DLL Reinstall cleanly or disable the orphaned startup entry
Unsupported hardware or Windows version The computer no longer supports the sensor package Uninstall the obsolete component

Should you install Visual C++ or .NET?

Not as the first step. accelerometerdll.dll belongs to HP 3D DriveGuard, not to Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a game.

Consider repairing or installing the official Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable only when the error also names a runtime such as VCRUNTIME or MSVCP, or when the HP installer itself reports a runtime failure. Do not replace those runtime files with loose DLL downloads.

Should you copy the DLL from another computer?

No. Manual copying can create architecture, version, dependency, permissions, and driver-signing problems. It also leaves the sensor driver, startup executable, and HP services out of sync.

The correct sources are the HP support page for the exact computer and Windows’ own repair tools when Windows components are damaged. A file copied from Windows.old or another HP laptop may appear to remove the message temporarily but is not a reliable repair.

FAQ

Is accelerometerdll.dll malware?

It is a real HP file associated with HP Mobile Data Protection and 3D DriveGuard. Verify the file’s location and package context if Windows Security flags it. If the file is in an unexpected folder or came from an unofficial download, remove it and reinstall the complete HP package from HP.

Is accelerometerdll.dll a Windows system file?

No. It is not a standard Windows DLL and should not normally be placed in C:WindowsSystem32.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does every HP laptop need HP 3D DriveGuard?

No. Support depends on the model, sensor hardware, and Windows version. If the computer does not have the supported HP Mobile Data Protection Sensor, cleanly uninstalling the obsolete package is preferable to forcing it to run.

What if Windows says HP Accelerometer is unsupported?

Uninstall the existing 3D DriveGuard package, restart, and check HP’s exact model page for a compatible release. If HP provides no supported package for that computer and Windows version, remove the obsolete software and disable its leftover startup entry.

What information should I provide for further support?

Record the HP product number, Windows version and build, exact error text, whether the sensor appears in Device Manager, whether the problem began after an update or hardware change, and the installed SoftPaq number. This information distinguishes a wrong package from a missing driver, quarantine event, or unsupported sensor.
