In Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve, start with the flight-control mode that helps you steer and keep targets in view, then let each mission briefing guide your aircraft and weapons. The game is an arcade-inspired flight shooter, not a study-level flight simulator: it emphasizes fast aerial action, missile evasion, high-G turns, dynamic weather and real-time wingman orders.
Choose a flight-control mode
The two modes change how you turn. Bandai Namco’s control-mode explainer describes the distinction this way:
- Standard: Push the left stick left or right to turn. This is a practical starting point if you want direct directional steering.
- Expert: Roll left or right with the left stick, then pitch up or down to make the turn. Try it if you prefer more direct roll-and-pitch control.
Neither mode is established as universally better. Use the one that lets you maintain control and track targets comfortably; you can experiment with the other later. The published explanation establishes the steering distinction, not a complete button chart for every platform or setup, so check the in-game settings for exact inputs.
Build a simple combat rhythm
Dogfights reward more than firing as soon as an enemy appears. The publisher’s game-systems walkthrough highlights staying on target, evasion and high-G turns as important combat systems. Use those ideas in this order:

- Orient toward the objective. Know which target or threat matters before committing to a chase.
- Keep the target in view. Steer to follow its movement and create a firing opportunity instead of turning without a clear aim.
- Attack when lined up. Fire when you have a useful angle, then keep assessing the target and surrounding threats.
- Evade incoming missiles. Use defensive maneuvers when threatened. A high-G turn is one option, not a maneuver to hold constantly.
Give wingmen a job
You can issue wingmen attack or cover orders in real time. An attack order can concentrate pressure on enemies; a cover order can support defense. Treat them as tactical options, not a fixed formula: the publisher identifies both commands but does not prescribe one strategy for every mission.
Prepare for the mission in the briefing
Mission types include dogfights, air support for ground troops and naval strikes, so the same aircraft or weapon setup will not necessarily suit every sortie. Read the briefing before choosing your aircraft, upgrades and special weapons. Bandai Namco advises matching those choices to the mission situation and your playstyle; it does not identify a single best aircraft or universal build.

Large enemy superweapons add another consideration. The publisher says colossal targets can be damaged outside designated target zones, and destroyed enemy weapons can create wreckage chain reactions against nearby targets. Inspect the target and surrounding battle area rather than assuming a large enemy can only be hit at one marked point.
What to expect from your controller
A flight stick is not established as necessary. TechRadar’s review reports completing play with a standard Xbox Wireless Controller on PC, while PC Gamer reported early-access player complaints about HOTAS support. These are limited observations, not a definitive compatibility guide across devices, platforms or updates. For exact controls and available device options on your setup, consult the game’s settings.

Release and platforms
Bandai Namco’s launch announcement states that Deluxe Edition holders received early access beginning September 29, 2026, and that worldwide launch was October 2, 2026, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam.
