Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War is the strongest overall pick if you want a story-driven campaign, with Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War and Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies close behind for different reasons. This is an editorial ranking of story and campaign design—not an official consensus, a flight-model ranking, or a recommended release order.
Bandai Namco describes the numbered games as self-contained stories set in Strangereal, its fictional world; shared history adds context, but you do not need to play every earlier entry first. The order below weighs squadron and character storytelling, narrative structure and player choice, and how each campaign conveys conflict at scale.

Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War
Ace Combat 5 takes the top spot for the balance of squadron-focused storytelling and a widening war. You fly with Wardog Squadron as the conflict between Osea and Yuktobania escalates. The campaign lets you choose aircraft and issue orders to squadmates, giving the squadron a practical role in play as well as a place in the story. That combination makes it the best overall recommendation here for players who want both a personal military narrative and a campaign that grows in scale.

Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War
Zero is a focused war story set in 1995, following Ustio’s defense against Belka through the perspective of a Galm Team pilot flying alongside Solo Wing Pixy. Its place near the top reflects the strength of that pilot-and-wingman framing. It also gives useful historical context for Ace Combat 5, though you can enjoy either game without treating one as mandatory setup for the other.

Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies
04 pairs a personal wartime perspective with a continental conflict shaped by the Ulysses asteroid impact. You fly as part of Mobius Squadron in the Usean war; the campaign’s human angle is set against the wider consequences of that crisis. Its storytelling is a strong choice if you want a more intimate emotional frame than a campaign built around managing a larger squadron.

Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere
Electrosphere stands out for narrative structure rather than conventional squadron drama. Its near-future corporate conflict branches according to your faction choice: UPEO, General Resource, or Neucom. That makes it the clearest pick for players who value divergent routes and replaying a campaign to see how different choices shape the story. Its branching design is distinctive enough to place it above several later entries, even though its appeal is more about choice and structure than a single linear war narrative.

Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown
Skies Unknown follows the 2019 Second Usean Continental War between Osea and Erusea, with unmanned aircraft central to the conflict and multiple squadrons contributing to the wider war. Its campaign also turns weather into a tactical factor: Bandai Namco Europe identifies lightning and icing among the hazards pilots must contend with. That gives the conflict a distinctive battlefield texture, even as the story’s scope is spread across a larger cast and war effort.

Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation
Fires of Liberation frames the Emmeria–Estovakia war through Garuda Team. Its Dynamic Mission System structures missions as simultaneous operations, emphasizing battlefield momentum and the sense that a broader conflict is unfolding beyond the player’s immediate engagement. It ranks below the more character- or choice-driven entries here because its strongest differentiator is campaign scale.

Ace Combat 2
Ace Combat 2 offers a mercenary squadron campaign against a coup. It is worth including in a ranking of the numbered series, but the official description available for it is narrower than the story and campaign details associated with the entries above. Its appeal is more foundational arcade flight combat than richly developed narrative structure.

Air Combat
Air Combat is the series’ starting point: a squadron campaign against a terrorist force, framed around foundational arcade flight combat. It belongs on a complete numbered-games list, but the available official story summary offers less material for comparing its characters or narrative design with later entries.

Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve — provisional placement
Bandai Namco’s official catalog lists Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve for release on October 2, 2026. Its premise follows a displaced pilot aboard the Endurance, a ship carrying refugees, who is given the name of a legendary ace and tasked with helping reclaim the Federation of Central Usea from Sotoa; the story begins in July 2029. Its relative rank is provisional: the official material establishes the premise and release listing, not comparative reception or campaign quality. Do not read its position here as a settled judgment on the finished game.
How to choose the right starting point
- For the strongest all-around story campaign: Start with Ace Combat 5.
- For a focused pilot-and-wingman war story: Choose Ace Combat Zero.
- For a personal perspective against a large-scale disaster and war: Try Ace Combat 04.
- For branching routes and faction choice: Pick Ace Combat 3.
- For battlefield scope and simultaneous operations: Look to Ace Combat 6.
This is a story-first order, not chronological play order. Bandai Namco’s series overview says the numbered titles each tell a self-contained story in Strangereal, while the series as a whole shares a fictional history. Starting with one highly ranked game is fine; returning to earlier titles can make callbacks and historical context more rewarding.

What the ranking does—and does not—measure
The order reflects editorial judgment across three questions: how well a game gives its pilots and squadrons a story, how its structure handles perspective or player choice, and how the campaign makes a war feel larger than an individual sortie. The official catalog describes features such as Ace Combat 3‘s faction routes, Ace Combat 5‘s squadron orders, and Ace Combat 6‘s simultaneous operations; it does not score or rank the games’ story quality. Accordingly, the positions are comparative opinion, not an official verdict.
Sales are not a proxy for narrative quality. Bandai Namco Entertainment America reported that Ace Combat 7 had sold more than 7 million units worldwide in a news item dated January 16, 2026; Bandai Namco’s series overview reports more than 20 million units for the franchise without stating a year for that figure in the accessible copy. Those milestones establish commercial reach, not which campaign has the best story.
Platform note for Ace Combat 7 on Switch
If you are choosing Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown Deluxe Edition for Nintendo Switch, note that Bandai Namco’s official Japan product page says the Switch version does not support flight sticks or VR. It also lists some DLC as sold separately. Check that platform-specific limitation against your preferred way to play before buying.
