Acer’s Project DualPlay is a Predator gaming-laptop concept whose touchpad area detaches to become a wireless game controller. It can also split into two joystick-style units, and removing it makes two speakers pop out from the laptop’s sides. Acer unveiled the design on September 4, 2024, but as of August 18, 2026, it has not announced a retail model, price, or release date.
How the controller works
While docked, the broad touchpad assembly serves as the laptop’s touchpad. To turn it into a gamepad, the user presses a release button above the keyboard, disengaging the electromagnetic lock, then removes the controller for wireless play. Acer describes the design as a way to switch between keyboard-and-mouse gaming and controller input without packing a separate gamepad.
“The touchpad turns into a controller” is a convenient shorthand, but the more precise description is that one removable assembly serves as the touchpad when docked and as a controller when detached.
What “DualPlay” means
The name points to several ways of using the concept: switching between input styles, using the detachable gamepad for local multiplayer, and giving the touchpad area two functions. Acer says the controller can separate into two joystick-style pieces. That could let two people play locally, but Acer has not published details on how the halves connect, how they are mapped in software, or which games would support them.

Acer positioned the concept for first-person shooters, multiplayer games, sports games, and fighting games, including Street Fighter 6. Those examples describe intended uses, not confirmation that every game would work with the controller or that the split units would behave like standard independent PC controllers. Acer’s announcement outlines the proposed modes.
Why speakers pop out when the controller is removed
Removing the controller also triggers two speakers to emerge from the laptop’s sides. Acer describes them as high-fidelity 5-watt speakers. That is Acer’s stated rating; it does not, on its own, establish loudness or sound quality. The announcement provides no independent measurements of volume, frequency response, distortion, or battery impact.

RGB lighting and Predator styling
The concept keeps a conventional clamshell-laptop layout but adds 360-degree dynamic RGB lighting across the keyboard, screen bezels, and touchpad area, along with illuminated controller joysticks and an infinity-mirror-style rear light bar. These details are part of the concept’s visual design, not evidence of a finalized production configuration. Acer’s Project DualPlay page presents the design and its features.

No confirmed retail version, price, release date, or complete production specification has been announced in Acer’s published material. Acer’s dedicated page still presents it as Project DualPlay, and the Acer U.S. laptop store does not list it among the reviewed retail catalog results as of August 18, 2026. That establishes that it has not been announced as a retail product in the material available; it does not establish that Acer has formally cancelled the project.

Acer has not published a complete specification sheet for DualPlay. The processor, graphics chip, display size and refresh rate, memory, storage, battery capacity, weight, ports, operating system, controller battery life, wireless protocol, and price remain unconfirmed. A specification sheet for a different Acer product should not be treated as a DualPlay spec sheet.
What the concept shows—and what remains unknown
Acer’s concept materials show the detachable touchpad-controller assembly, electromagnetic attachment, release button, pop-out side speakers, split-controller idea, and RGB-heavy styling. They establish what Acer proposed, not how a finished retail laptop would perform. Hands-on show coverage can give a sense of the physical design, but it is not a test of a production device; PCWorld’s event coverage describes the concept in that context.

Without a retail unit or fuller technical details, there is no verified answer about controller latency, wireless range, ergonomics, durability, repairability, thermal performance, or compatibility with particular games. It is also unknown how the laptop would handle an empty controller battery, whether the controller could charge while docked, or whether its halves could be used independently. These are practical questions a production model would need to answer, not proven defects.

Where it could help
- Fewer items to pack: The controller would travel with the laptop rather than requiring a separate gamepad.
- Flexible input: The laptop’s keyboard remains available for games better suited to keyboard and mouse, while the detached controller offers another input option.
- Local play: The split-controller idea could enable two-player gaming without carrying two full-size gamepads, if the final software and games support it.
Questions a production model would need to settle
- Comfort and size: Acer has not provided dimensions or evidence that the detached unit would feel as comfortable as a dedicated controller.
- Space and portability: A controller mount and deployable speakers occupy internal volume. How that would affect weight, thickness, cooling, or battery capacity is unknown.
- Reliability and service: A moving mechanism and removable accessory add parts that would need to withstand travel and remain serviceable.
- Everyday touchpad use: The docked assembly would need to work reliably as a touchpad and stay secure during normal laptop use.
- Software and power: Pairing, remapping, charging, and game compatibility would need to be clear and dependable; Acer has not published those implementation details.
What to use instead today
For a gaming laptop that can play with a controller, the straightforward available setup is a conventional gaming laptop paired with a standalone PC-compatible gamepad. It adds an item to carry, but gives buyers a choice of controller size and layout, and a replacement does not depend on a proprietary laptop mechanism. For local multiplayer, two standalone controllers are the practical route, subject to the game supporting multiple inputs.

A gaming handheld is another category, not a direct substitute: it is built around portable controller play, while a gaming laptop provides a larger display, keyboard, and conventional laptop workspace. Acer’s current catalog includes other gaming laptops, but they should not be confused with DualPlay; no listed alternative has the concept’s integrated detachable controller and pop-out speakers.
