acfilterres.dll is identified as AcFilter AutoCAD Resource DLL. It belongs to AutoCAD and is associated with Autodesk, Inc.
This is an application file, not a Windows component. There is no reliable evidence that it normally belongs in either C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Its exact installation folder depends on the AutoCAD product, release, platform, language, and installation method.
The filename may appear in several messages:
- “This application failed to start because acfilterres.dll was not found.”
- “The program can’t start because acfilterres.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Error loading acfilterres.dll.”
- “A required component is missing: acfilterres.dll.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- A Windows loader message saying the file is not designed to run on Windows.
The last message does not necessarily mean that Windows itself is defective. It can indicate an incompatible, damaged, or incomplete application file.

A message saying that the “specified module could not be found” can also mean that acfilterres.dll exists but one of its dependencies cannot load. That is why replacing only the named file is often unsuccessful.

Fix 1: Repair AutoCAD from Windows
Use this first if AutoCAD is already installed and the installer provides a repair option.
- Save your work and close AutoCAD.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - In Programs and Features, find the installed AutoCAD product.
- Select it.
- Choose Uninstall/Change.
- If the Autodesk maintenance window appears, select Repair.
- Follow the prompts until the operation finishes.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch AutoCAD again.
A successful repair should restore missing application files in the product’s own installation directory. It should not require you to place acfilterres.dll in a Windows system folder.
If there is no Repair option, or repair finishes but the same message returns, continue with a complete reinstall. Newer Autodesk installations may not expose the older repair workflow.

Fix 2: Reinstall the exact Autodesk product
Reinstalling is the most reliable solution when AutoCAD files are missing, corrupted, or from mixed releases.
Before removing anything, identify the product named in the error or shortcut. It may be AutoCAD or an AutoCAD-based vertical product. Do not install a generic or different release simply because its name looks similar.
Remove the existing installation
- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for the relevant AutoCAD product.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the product on Windows 10.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the Autodesk removal prompts.
- Restart Windows.
If normal removal fails or leaves Autodesk components behind, use Autodesk’s official clean-uninstall procedure for the affected AutoCAD product. Restart after the cleanup finishes.
Download and reinstall from Autodesk
- Sign in to Autodesk Account.
- Open All Products and Services.
- Find AutoCAD or the relevant AutoCAD-based product.
- Select the required release, operating system, and language.
- Choose the available Install, Download, or Direct Download option.
- Run the installer as an administrator.
- Allow the installation to finish without interrupting it.
- Restart Windows.
- Start AutoCAD from its normal shortcut.
Use the same product and release that your license, project files, or organization requires. Do not substitute a DLL from an older or newer AutoCAD installation.
The fix worked if AutoCAD starts without the acfilterres.dll message and the application reaches its normal workspace. If a different DLL is now named, record that exact filename. It indicates that the original missing file was not the only problem.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine an application file. This is a possible cause, but do not assume that every detection is a false positive.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions involving the AutoCAD installation folder or
acfilterres.dll. - Expand a detection to view its details.
- Confirm that the original path belongs to the Autodesk installation you recognize.
- If the detection is trusted and the file is clearly from your legitimate installation, use the available Restore or Allow on device action.
- Restart AutoCAD.
Microsoft recommends allowing a file only when you trust it. If the file is quarantined again immediately, do not create a broad antivirus exclusion. Leave it blocked and reinstall AutoCAD from Autodesk Account instead.
If your organization manages Microsoft Defender or another security product, contact the administrator before restoring or allowing the file.

Fix 4: Check the installation folder without copying files
You can inspect whether the file exists, but the result should guide repair rather than manual replacement.
- Right-click the AutoCAD shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Select Open File Location.
- Search that folder and its subfolders for
acfilterres.dll. - If Windows finds it, note its full path and do not move it.
- If Windows does not find it, repair or reinstall AutoCAD.
A file in an unrelated download folder, temporary folder, or Windows system directory is not proof that it is the correct file. The relevant copy must match the owning Autodesk product and its installation.
Why downloading the DLL separately is unsafe
Avoid random DLL download sites websites and individual files shared in forums or software bundles. A matching filename does not prove that the file is safe, belongs to your AutoCAD release, or has the correct architecture.
A separately downloaded file can be:
- Malicious or modified
- From a different AutoCAD release
- Built for a different architecture
- Missing required dependencies
- Incompatible with the rest of the installation
It can also hide the underlying cause, such as a failed update, corrupted installer cache, or incomplete product removal.
The safe source is the Autodesk installation package obtained through your Autodesk Account or an approved company deployment system. For a managed installation, ask the administrator to repair or redeploy AutoCAD rather than copying a DLL manually.
Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
Do not routinely run:
regsvr32 acfilterres.dll
regsvr32 is intended for registering OLE, ActiveX, and COM-style DLLs that provide a registration entry point. acfilterres.dll is described as an AutoCAD resource DLL, not as an ActiveX or COM server.

If you run the command and see an error about DllRegisterServer, that does not mean you need a different copy of the file. It means registration is not the appropriate repair. Remove or reinstall AutoCAD instead.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when other programs also fail
DISM and System File Checker repair Windows components. They do not normally restore an Autodesk application DLL, because acfilterres.dll is not a Windows system file.

- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test AutoCAD.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it repaired files, test AutoCAD again, but do not expect SFC alone to supply an Autodesk DLL. If both commands complete without resolving AutoCAD, return to the Autodesk repair or reinstall process.

Fix 6: Check architecture and release matching
A 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch can prevent a program from loading a DLL. However, the answer is not to put a 32-bit file into System32, or a 64-bit file into SysWOW64.

The correct approach is to install the AutoCAD build intended for your product and system. Public file records describe historical copies, but they do not establish the architecture or compatibility of every AutoCAD release.
Check the system architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Review System type.
Then confirm the AutoCAD product and release in:
- Open AutoCAD if possible.
- Select Help.
- Choose About, or open the product information panel.
- Record the product name and release.
If AutoCAD cannot open, check the product name in Installed apps, the Start menu shortcut, or your Autodesk Account. Reinstall that exact product and release using its official installer.
Fix 7: Test whether the Windows profile is the problem
If AutoCAD works for another Windows account, the installation may be healthy while your user profile has damaged settings or restricted permissions.
Create a temporary local administrator account:
- Open Settings.
- Select Accounts.
- Select Other users on Windows 11, or Family & other users on Windows 10.
- Choose Add account.
- Select I don’t have this person’s sign-in information.
- Select Add a user without a Microsoft account.
- Create the account.
- Select the new account.
- Choose Change account type.
- Set it to Administrator.
- Sign out of your current account.
- Sign in to the test account.
- Launch AutoCAD.
If AutoCAD works there, do not copy random DLLs between profiles. Move or recreate the affected AutoCAD user settings according to Autodesk’s support guidance, and check whether your original profile has permission or corruption problems.

If AutoCAD fails in both accounts, the installation or a shared dependency is more likely to be damaged.
Fix 8: Recheck recent changes
Think about what changed immediately before the error appeared:
- An AutoCAD update
- An interrupted installation
- A disk cleanup
- Antivirus activity
- A driver or system update
- Manual deletion of application files
- A failed uninstall
Restart Windows and install any pending Windows updates. Then run the Autodesk installer again.
If the error began after a recent system change and you have a suitable restore point, System Restore may help:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point created before the problem.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore affects system files, registry settings, and installed programs, but it does not normally remove personal files. It is not a substitute for reinstalling AutoCAD when the application files themselves are missing.

A graphics driver is not the normal source of acfilterres.dll, and Device Manager will not restore an AutoCAD resource DLL. Still, update the graphics driver if AutoCAD began failing after a display-driver change or if the error is accompanied by crashes, blank windows, or rendering problems.
To check it:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
You can also select Properties, open the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver if the problem began immediately after a driver update and the option is available.

If repair and reinstall do not resolve the error, collect the exact details before trying more changes:
- The complete error text.
- The full path shown in the error, if one appears.
- The AutoCAD product name and release.
- Whether the installation came from Autodesk Account, a company deployment, or another managed source.
- Whether Windows Security quarantined a file.
- Whether the problem affects every Windows account.
- Any new DLL named after reinstalling.
- Recent entries in Event Viewer:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error at the time AutoCAD failed.
- Autodesk installer logs, if the installation reported an error.
If the message names a dependency rather than acfilterres.dll, repair that dependency through the Autodesk installer or the software vendor’s official package. Do not assume that Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET supplies this particular file. There is no verified evidence that a Microsoft runtime normally provides it.

Does regsvr32 fix this error?
Usually not. A resource DLL normally does not need COM or ActiveX registration.
Should I run SFC for this error?
Run DISM and SFC when other Windows applications also fail or Windows itself shows signs of corruption. For an isolated AutoCAD error, repair or reinstall AutoCAD first.
What if the file is in quarantine?
Check the original path and detection details. Restore it only when you can verify that it belongs to your legitimate Autodesk installation. If it is quarantined again, reinstall AutoCAD and investigate the security detection.

Historical public records are not sufficient to establish the architecture for every AutoCAD release. Install the correct build for the product and system instead of relying on a separately downloaded file.
Why does reinstalling produce another missing-DLL error?
The installation may still be incomplete, the wrong product may have been installed, another dependency may be missing, or security software may be removing files. Record the new filename and review the installer and Windows Security history.
Can Windows Features fix this file?
Windows Features are not the normal repair route for an Autodesk resource DLL. Enable or repair a Windows feature only when a separate application specifically requires it and identifies that feature.
What is the definitive fix?
Repair AutoCAD when that option exists. Otherwise remove the damaged installation and reinstall the exact Autodesk product and release from its official source.
