“The program can’t start because acil.dll is missing from your computer.” You may also see “acil.dll was not found,” “Failed to load acil.dll,” or “The procedure entry point could not be located in acil.dll.”
Which fix applies to you
Use the symptom that best matches your situation:
- The error started after an update, uninstall, cleanup, or failed installation: repair or reinstall the CAD, CAE, simulation, or engineering program that still expects
acil.dll. - The file was quarantined: check Windows Security Protection history, then repair the parent application rather than copying a replacement DLL.
- The file exists but will not load: suspect a missing dependency, incorrect architecture, wrong installation path, or incompatible application version.
- The message mentions an entry point: the DLL is probably the wrong version for the application, not simply absent.
- Several unrelated Windows programs are also failing: repair Windows components with DISM and SFC, but do not expect those commands to download
acil.dll. - The error appears after removing old CAD software: remove the stale startup entry or reinstall the application that still launches with Windows.
- You do not know which program needs the file: identify the application from the error window, shortcut, startup entry, or event timing before changing any DLL.
What acil.dll is
acil.dll is publicly associated with the ACIS Geometric Modeler, a commercial geometric-modeling component from Spatial. ACIS is embedded in third-party CAD, CAE, simulation, and engineering software, including products that use it as part of their own installation.

It is not a normal Windows system file, Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, or device driver. There is no reliable evidence that Windows ships with acil.dll, and the filename alone cannot identify the exact application that installed it.
Public file archives disagree about its architecture, version, and size. That makes an archive copy particularly unsafe: it may belong to another ACIS generation, another application release, or another processor architecture.

The correct repair is therefore to restore the matching component through the application that installed it.
Fix 1: Repair the parent CAD or engineering application
This is the safest and most likely solution.
Identify the parent application
Start with the program that displays the error. Note its exact name and version if shown. If the error appears while Windows starts:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for a CAD, modeling, simulation, licensing, or engineering-related entry.
- Right-click a likely entry and choose Open file location.
- Check the shortcut target and surrounding folders for the application name.
You can also check the timing:
- An error after uninstalling old CAD software often means a leftover shortcut or startup entry still points to that program.
- An error after updating usually indicates a partial update or mismatched ACIS files.
- An error after antivirus activity may indicate quarantine.
- An error after moving the program folder may indicate a broken search path or incomplete installation.
Do not delete acil.dll from another program just because its name matches. First determine which application is requesting it.
Use Windows’ built-in repair option
On Windows 11:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the CAD or engineering application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
On Windows 10:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
Not every desktop application exposes this option. If the repair button is missing or does not change the error, use the application’s own installer.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallRun the original installer
Find the installer supplied by the software vendor or your organization’s approved software repository. Run it and choose Repair, Modify, or a similar maintenance option.
If the installer offers architecture or version choices, use the same release and architecture as the installed application. Do not combine a 32-bit acil.dll with a 64-bit program, or the reverse. A 32-bit program generally needs the 32-bit companion libraries supplied with that application, while a 64-bit program needs the 64-bit set.
Restart Windows after the repair and launch the program from its normal shortcut. Success means the application opens without the missing-file or load error. If repair fails, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the official vendor installer. Preserve project files and licensing information before uninstalling.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may remove or quarantine an application component after an update or scan.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Look for an entry that identifies
acil.dllor the affected application. - Check the detected file path before taking action.
Restore the file only when you have confirmed that:
- It was inside the legitimate application installation directory.
- The application was installed from an official or organization-approved source.
- The detection corresponds to the same application and release.
Do not disable antivirus protection to install a DLL downloaded from an unknown site. After restoring a confirmed application file, repair or reinstall the parent program so its complete file set is restored consistently. If the detection appears incorrect, submit it to the antivirus vendor as a possible false positive.
If the file was in a temporary folder, Downloads, a random archive directory, or an unrelated system location, leave it quarantined and run a full security scan.
Fix 3: Check for a dependency, path, or version problem
A message such as “Error loading acil.dll. The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that acil.dll itself is missing. Windows can display that wording when a dependency used by the DLL cannot be loaded.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFirst check whether the file exists:
- Open the affected application’s installation folder.
- Search for
acil.dll. - Right-click it and choose Properties.
- Check the Location and Digital Signatures tabs when available.
A file in the application’s own folder is more plausible than an identically named file in Downloads, a temporary directory, or an unrelated Windows folder. Do not move it manually. Use the vendor’s installer to restore the correct path and related files.
If a trusted dependency-analysis tool is available through your organization, use it to identify the missing module. Otherwise, review the application installer log or contact the vendor with:
- The complete error text.
- The application name and release.
- The full path of
acil.dll. - Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- The time the failure began.
- Recent updates, removals, security deteions, or folder moves.
Do not assume that Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is the cause without evidence from the application vendor. Installing unrelated runtimes can leave the real problem untouched.
Understand entry-point errors
“The procedure entry point could not be located in acil.dll” usually indicates an incompatible DLL version. The application found a file with the expected name, but that file does not expose the function required by the application.
This commonly happens when files from different releases are mixed. Reinstall the exact application release and do not copy acil.dll from another computer, another product, or a download archive.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
DISM and SFC repair protected Windows components. They do not normally restore acil.dll, because this file belongs to an installed application rather than Windows.

Use these commands when other Windows features are also malfunctioning, system files are damaged, or Windows repair tools report corruption.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Try the affected application again.
Microsoft documents the DISM and SFC process here. If SFC reports that it repaired files but acil.dll is still missing, return to the parent application’s installer. Repeating SFC will not create an application-specific ACIS component.
When manually hunting through Windows components and repeating DISM/SFC does not show what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported system problems; its free scan shows findings, while repair is performed by the full version. It is not required, and reinstalling the CAD or engineering application remains the definitive fix for an application-owned acil.dll.
Fix 5: Do not use regsvr32 as a routine fix
regsvr32 is intended for registerable DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft explains its behavior in this command reference.
An ordinary ACIS application library is not established as a self-registering COM component. Running this command is therefore not a normal repair:
regsvr32 acil.dll
It may produce an entry-point error, architecture error, or another message without repairing the application. Only use regsvr32 when the software vendor specifically instructs you to register that particular DLL and provides the correct command for the application’s architecture.

acil.dll is not a device driver, so a routine graphics or chipset driver update is not the primary fix. Consider drivers only when the application’s own diagnostics, event logs, or vendor support instructions identify a graphics, licensing, storage, or other device-driver conflict.
To check Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category identified by the application.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a vendor-provided driver, choose Browse my computer for drivers only when you have downloaded the correct package from the device manufacturer or your organization’s approved source. Avoid forcing a driver from an unrelated model.
When checking many device entries manually becomes guesswork, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show which drivers are reported as outdated; the free scan identifies findings, while installation is handled by the full version. A driver update is not a substitute for reinstalling the application that owns acil.dll.
Why random DLL downloads usually fail
Downloading acil.dll from a random DLL archive creates several problems:
- The file may contain malware or have been altered.
- Its architecture may not match the application.
- Its version may belong to another ACIS generation.
- Its dependencies may still be missing.
- Copying it into
System32orSysWOW64can create conflicts. - The application’s installer and servicing system will not know that the file was added.
- An entry-point error can replace the original missing-file error.
Do not copy the file into Windows system directories unless the software vendor explicitly requires that location. The safe source is the original application installer, repair feature, or official vendor support channel.
If reinstalling still does not work
Check these items before escalating:
- Confirm that the old application version was fully removed.
- Restart Windows before reinstalling.
- Check available disk space.
- Run the installer with Run as administrator.
- Review the installer log for access-denied, blocked-file, or dependency errors.
- Check whether endpoint security blocked part of the installation.
- Confirm that licensing services and required permissions are working.
- Remove stale shortcuts or startup entries from an uninstalled application.
- Verify that the application release matches its project files and plugins.
- Contact the software vendor with the exact error, application version, Windows architecture, DLL path, and installer log.
If the application worked recently and a suitable restore point exists, System Restore can be considered as a last resort. Scan for malware first if the file disappeared unexpectedly or multiple application files were removed.
FAQ
Is acil.dll a Windows file?
No evidence supports that. It is associated with the ACIS Geometric Modeler and is normally supplied as part of a third-party CAD, CAE, simulation, or engineering application.
Which program needs acil.dll?
The filename alone cannot identify one universal program. Check the error window, application folder, startup entry, recent uninstall, or installer log to find the parent application.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Should I download acil.dll?
No. Use the application’s official installer, repair function, or vendor support channel. An archive copy may be malicious, incompatible, incomplete, or the wrong architecture.
Should I put acil.dll in System32?
No. Keep application libraries with the application unless its vendor explicitly documents another location.
Will Visual C++ or DirectX fix it?
Not necessarily. The error may involve a missing dependency, but there is no basis for installing a particular runtime without evidence from the parent application.
Why does the error say the module is missing when acil.dll exists?
A dependency of acil.dll may be missing, or Windows may be loading an incompatible architecture or version. Repair the complete application installation rather than replacing one file.
