Start with a three-minute diagnosis
Before replacing anything, record three details:
- Which program shows the error? Is it Windows itself, an administration utility, or one older application?
- When did it begin? Note whether it followed Windows Update, cleanup software, antivirus activity, a failed upgrade, or an application installation.
- Which Windows architecture is installed? Open Settings > System > About and check System type.
These details matter because acledit.dll is a Microsoft Windows component, but an application can also report the error when it loads the wrong copy, uses the wrong architecture, or has another damaged dependency.
acledit.dll is the Access Control List Editor, part of the Microsoft Windows Operating System. It supports Windows security-permission interfaces, including editing permissions, ownership, auditing information, and discretionary or system access control lists. Windows ACLs control access to securable objects through DACLs and SACLs. Microsoft explains ACLs here.
The safest first response is to repair Windows rather than download the DLL. Do not copy a file from a random DLL website into System32.
What the error means
You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because acledit.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “acledit.dll was not found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because acledit.dll was not found.”
- “acledit.dll could not be loaded.”
- “acledit.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These messages all indicate a loading failure, but they do not prove that the file is physically absent. Windows or an application may be dealing with:

- A missing or damaged Windows component
- A corrupted component store
- A wrong-architecture DLL
- A damaged dependency
- An application-folder copy taking precedence over the Windows copy
- An invalid or tampered file
- An antivirus quarantine event
- A program that is too old for the current Windows installation
Windows uses a defined DLL search order, and an application-folder copy can be found before the expected system copy. Microsoft documents DLL search order here.
Fix 1: Install updates, then repair Windows automatically
This is the best first fix when the error appears in Windows, an administration tool, or more than one application.
Install pending Windows updates
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Test the program that produced the error.
If the error remains, continue with DISM and System File Checker.
Run DISM from an elevated Command Prompt
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Leave the administrator Command Prompt open.
DISM repairs the Windows component store and supplies a repair source for protected system files. The scan can take time and may appear to pause. Do not close the window simply because the progress percentage has not changed for a while.
A successful result normally reports that the restore operation completed successfully. If DISM reports that it cannot find source files, use a legitimate matching Windows installation source rather than downloading acledit.dll separately:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the path to a matching Windows repair source. The source must correspond appropriately to the installed Windows edition, language, architecture, and build.
Run System File Checker
In the same administrator Command Prompt, enter:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then interpret the result:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected Windows files appear intact. Investigate the application, DLL search path, architecture, or another dependency.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart Windows and test the affected program.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If it still fails, continue to the repair options below.
- SFC could not perform the requested operation: retry from Safe Mode and review the CBS log at
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log.
After SFC completes successfully, restart the computer. Microsoft’s recommended order is DISM first, followed by SFC. Follow Microsoft’s SFC procedure.

If you prefer assistance with that manual process, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows problems; its free scan shows what it found, while repair is handled by the full version. It is optional, and DISM and SFC remain the appropriate built-in repair path.
Fix 2: Determine whether one application is responsible
If the error appears only when launching one old program, Windows may be healthy and that application may be requesting the component incorrectly.
Repair the application
On supported Windows applications:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, if available.
- Launch the application again.
The Repair option attempts to correct the installation without removing the application’s data. If it does not help, use the application’s documented uninstall and reinstall process, then install the latest update supplied by its developer.
For a traditional desktop program, use Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, select the program, and choose Repair or Change when the installer provides that option.

If the program is old, check whether it supports the installed Windows release. Do not assume that an error mentioning a Microsoft DLL means the application needs a third-party runtime. The invoking program may simply be using an obsolete permission interface or carrying a damaged private copy.
Check whether the failure is application-specific
Test another Windows program that opens security or file-permission interfaces. If other programs work and only one application fails, prioritize repairing or replacing that application.
If several programs fail, or Windows displays the error during startup or administration tasks, return to DISM and SFC, then investigate quarantine and file integrity.
Fix 3: Check the file path, architecture, and signature
A legitimate filename does not make every copy legitimate. The location and signature are important.
Check expected Windows locations
On 64-bit Windows, Microsoft’s general file-system rules place 64-bit system files in:
%windir%System32
32-bit system files are generally accessed through:
Rank #2
- MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE
%windir%SysWOW64
The names can be confusing: on 64-bit Windows, System32 is the normal directory for 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains the 32-bit system-file view. The exact presence and version of acledit.dll depend on the Windows release and installed components. Do not assume that every installation has identical copies in both directories, and do not swap files between them manually. Microsoft describes these directory rules here.
To check for files without downloading anything:
- Open File Explorer.
- Enter
%windir%System32in the address bar. - Search for
acledit.dll. - On 64-bit Windows, also check
%windir%SysWOW64. - Right-click any result and select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Check the description, product name, and version information.
- Open Digital Signatures and inspect the signer.
The known identity is Access Control List Editor, associated with Microsoft Windows Operating System and Microsoft Corporation. A public record for a signed Windows 10 sample reports version 10.0.19041.1, but that does not establish a universal version for every Windows release. Public databases also list older builds, including Windows XP-era versions, which must not be treated as interchangeable with Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Treat unusual paths carefully
A copy under an application’s installation directory requires investigation. It may be a private application dependency, but it may also be an incorrect or modified copy.
A copy under %ProgramData%, a temporary directory, a random GUID-named directory, or another unknown folder is especially suspicious. Microsoft has documented malware using the filename acledit.dll in an unusual location as part of Bedep activity. This does not mean every copy outside the Windows directories is malware, but it does mean the file should not be trusted solely because its name looks familiar. Review Microsoft’s Bedep description.
Check which copy an application loads
If the file exists in the expected Windows directory but the error continues, the application may be loading another copy first. Suitable diagnostic tools can show the module path used by the failing process. An administrator can also inspect the application’s installation directory for a local acledit.dll.
Do not delete or replace a file merely because it has the same name. Record its path, verify its signature, scan it, and repair the application or Windows installation that owns it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
If the problem began after an antivirus alert, Windows Security may have quarantined the file.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any relevant detection and inspect its original file path and action.
Do not restore the item simply because an application now reports it as missing. First verify that:
- The file was in a normal Windows system directory.
- Its digital signature identifies Microsoft.
- The detection is a false positive rather than a malicious file using the same name.
- Windows and the affected application are fully updated.
- A fresh Windows Security scan does not identify related threats.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined item can cause Defender to detect it again unless it is explicitly allowed. Read Microsoft’s Protection History guidance.
If the file came from an unusual directory, leave it quarantined while you investigate. Run a full scan. If malware is suspected, use the recovery options below instead of copying a replacement DLL into a system directory.
Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is appropriate when acledit.dll began failing immediately after a driver installation, application installation, update, or system configuration change, and a suitable restore point exists.
- Open Start.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Select Next, review the affected programs, and confirm.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the restoration.
System Restore rolls back system files, drivers, and settings while normally preserving personal files. It does not remove every possible cause, and it may be unavailable or have no suitable restore point. Microsoft lists recovery and System Restore options here.
Fix 6: Reinstall the current Windows version
If DISM and SFC cannot repair the component, use a supported Windows repair installation rather than manually replacing the file.
Windows 11 repair reinstall
On supported Windows 11 installations:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings where the option is available. Microsoft documents this repair option here.

If the option is not available, use matching Windows installation media for an in-place repair. Back up important data first, confirm the edition and architecture, and follow Microsoft’s installation instructions. An in-place repair is preferable to downloading a loose DLL because it repairs Windows components as a set.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not use regsvr32 as a routine fix
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is intended for components designed to be registered, not for every Windows DLL. Microsoft documents Regsvr32 here.
There is no verified reason to routinely register acledit.dll. Avoid treating this as a repair:

regsvr32 acledit.dll
If the DLL does not expose the required registration entry point, the command fails. Even if a registration command succeeds for some other component, it does not repair a missing, corrupted, wrong-architecture, or malicious file.

acledit.dll is a Windows system component. It is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET assembly, or ordinary game middleware file.
Installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET may be correct for a different missing DLL named in the same error sequence, but those packages do not normally restore the Windows ACL editor. Run DISM and SFC first, then repair the application that reports the error.
Driver updates are not the normal fix
A graphics, storage, or chipset driver is not the usual source of an acledit.dll error. Device Manager should be used only when the diagnosis also shows a device problem, failed update, or application that depends on a damaged driver.
To check devices:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories with warning icons.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties and review the General and Driver tabs.
- Use Update driver only with a verified driver source.
- Restart and retest the application.
Do not install a driver merely because a DLL error appeared. If you are manually checking many devices and cannot tell which driver changed, Outbyte Driver Updater can show outdated drivers in its free scan; driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace Windows component repair or an application reinstall.

When manual replacement is justified
Manual replacement is an advanced administrator procedure, not the normal consumer fix. Consider it only after DISM and SFC fail, the repair source is known, and the replacement is obtained from:
- Matching Windows installation media
- A matching component-store or recovery source
- An identical Windows build and architecture
The replacement must match the installed Windows environment. A file from Windows XP, Windows 7, or another architecture is not an acceptable substitute for a current Windows component.
Never download acledit.dll from an unofficial DLL repository. Such a file may be malware, the wrong version, the wrong architecture, the wrong language, or a tampered binary. It can also conceal a broader component-store problem.
Frequently asked questions
Is acledit.dll a legitimate Microsoft file?
Yes. The genuine component is the Microsoft Access Control List Editor, associated with the Microsoft Windows Operating System. Verify the file’s path and Microsoft digital signature because malware can use the same filename.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Which Windows versions contain it?
Different Windows releases ship different component builds and architectures. A public record identifies a signed Windows 10 sample as version 10.0.19041.1, while older public listings include earlier Windows builds. Do not treat any one version as universal.
Should acledit.dll be in System32 or SysWOW64?
On 64-bit Windows, Microsoft’s file-system rules generally use System32 for 64-bit system files and SysWOW64 for 32-bit system files. The exact presence of this component depends on the Windows release and installed components. Do not copy it between directories.
Why does the error appear only in one old program?
That program may be loading a private copy, using an incompatible architecture, or relying on an outdated permission interface. Repair or reinstall the program and check for a current update before changing Windows files.
SFC says there are no integrity violations. What now?
The problem may be the application, its search path, a wrong-architecture copy, or another dependency. Check the failing program’s directory and use diagnostic tools to identify the actual loaded module path.
