Activision has confirmed that generative-AI tools helped develop some in-game assets for Call of Duty. The disclosure appears on the Steam pages for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7, which state: “Our team uses generative AI tools to help develop some in game assets.”
That is an admission of AI-assisted asset production—not proof that an entire game, its campaign, characters, dialogue, code or core gameplay was generated by AI. Activision has not identified the assets, tools, quantity of material or exact human workflow involved.
What Activision actually disclosed
The wording on the two individual Steam product pages is deliberately limited:
“Our team uses generative AI tools to help develop some in game assets.”

“Some” gives no percentage or item count. “Help develop” also does not say that an AI model produced a finished asset without substantial human work. Artists could have used generated material for concepts, variations, references, compositing or paint-over work, but Activision has not described its process.
The disclosure does not name an AI vendor or model. It does not say that generative AI was used for writing, voice acting, level design, animation, programming, weapons, maps or gameplay systems.
Which Call of Duty games carry the notice?
The notice is visible on the Steam pages for Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7. A broader Call of Duty Steam listing also displays the disclosure while aggregating several recent products, including Warzone, Modern Warfare II, Modern Warfare III, Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7.

An aggregate franchise page is not a per-game asset inventory. The safest conclusion is that the named product pages disclose AI-assisted development; the listing alone does not prove that every title shown there contains AI-generated assets.
Why the disclosure appeared
Coverage published on February 25, 2025 linked the notice to Steam’s requirements for developers to explain the use of generative-AI content. That makes this best understood as a platform transparency disclosure attached to a Steam listing, rather than a detailed Activision press release or a response to a documented investigation.
The notice made an existing suspicion easier to verify. It did not establish when Activision first began using these tools, and it should not be read as proof that the company had never used AI before February 2025.

What players thought they were seeing
Players and commentators pointed to apparent defects in some Call of Duty artwork, including distorted hands, strange anatomy, inconsistent lettering and other visual errors. Reports associated the controversy with calling cards, loading screens, icons, prestige imagery and promotional or cosmetic art.

Deliberate stylization, rushed conventional production, compression and post-processing can also produce odd-looking images. Activision’s Steam wording does not confirm any particular image.

The AI Trace database compiles outside reports about categories such as calling cards, loading screens, prestige icons and at least one paid cosmetic bundle. It is a secondary compilation, not an official Activision inventory, so those entries should be treated as reported examples rather than definitive attribution.

Activision’s explanation of human involvement
Later reporting quoted Activision saying it uses “a variety of digital tools, including AI tools” to support its teams and that the creative process remains led by studio talent. That statement indicates human oversight, but it does not answer how the work was done.
- Were artists writing prompts, selecting outputs, compositing them and correcting errors?
- Were generated images final art, rough concepts or production references?
- Did the assets pass the same quality-control checks as conventionally produced work?
- Were employees or contractors affected by the adoption of these tools?
- Were artists given attribution or additional compensation?
Until Activision publishes those details, “human-led” describes responsibility at a high level rather than a measurable division of labor.

The controversy concerns generative AI used to create or assist with player-facing content. Call of Duty has also used machine-learning systems for functions such as voice-chat moderation, anti-cheat and matchmaking or player-behavior analysis. Those systems classify, detect or optimize; they do not necessarily generate artwork. Combining both categories under “AI-made Call of Duty” gives a misleading picture.

How the story developed
- Before February 2025: Players criticized artwork they believed contained AI-like errors.
- February 25, 2025: News coverage connected the Steam AI-content notice to the platform’s disclosure requirements. Reports included AllTechNerd’s account and a contemporaneous Slashdot summary.
- November 1, 2024: Black Ops 6 had released before that coverage, and its Steam page carried the notice.
- November 13, 2025: Black Ops 7 launched with the same disclosure.
- August 18, 2026: The notice remained visible on the retrieved Steam pages for both games.
What this means for players, artists and buyers
For players
The public evidence cannot tell you how much of a particular game is AI-assisted or whether an image you dislike used a generator. Players who care about provenance have a legitimate transparency complaint: the notice confirms use but supplies no asset list or workflow.
For artists and developers
The disclosure raises labor questions without answering them. It does not demonstrate that Activision replaced artists, reduced staff or used unlicensed work for training. Those are separate claims requiring separate evidence.
For copyright and legality
AI assistance is not automatically unlawful. Copyright, contract and consumer-protection outcomes depend on the jurisdiction, the training data, human authorship and how an asset was used. The Steam notice alone proves none of those issues.

For purchase decisions
The official Black Ops 6 Steam page and Black Ops 7 Steam page are the relevant buying pages, but neither offers a no-generative-AI production guarantee. Availability and pricing can change by region, edition, promotion and date. Readers seeking access rather than an outright purchase can check the current Xbox Game Pass catalog; inclusion and tiers are subject to change.
Questions Activision has not answered
- Which exact assets used generative-AI tools?
- Which models or vendors supplied those tools?
- How much of each asset was generated, edited or painted by humans?
- Does the notice apply equally to every game on the aggregate franchise page?
- Did any AI-assisted material appear in paid cosmetics or marketing?
- What review, attribution and compensation policies apply to the artists involved?
- Did the tools change staffing, contracting or production budgets?
The bottom line
Activision has acknowledged generative-AI assistance in developing some Call of Duty in-game assets. The evidence does not support calling Black Ops 6, Black Ops 7 or the franchise “AI-made.” Until the company identifies the assets, tools and workflow, the scale and significance of the practice remain unknown.
