Yes: Activision has made documented changes to reduce unnecessary Call of Duty downloads and storage use. The changes include reorganizing shared files, letting players install selected games and modes, separating Warzone from annual releases on most platforms, and streaming some high-quality assets. They do not guarantee small updates: a migration can involve a large download even when the resulting installation takes up less space.
What Activision is optimizing
Call of Duty storage figures describe different things, and they are not interchangeable:
- Download size is the data transferred over the internet.
- Required free space is the room a platform may need to download, unpack, replace, or verify files. It can exceed the eventual size of the installation.
- Installed footprint is the space occupied after installation or an update finishes.
- Launcher and library footprint can include the Call of Duty hub, selected games and modes, shared files, language packs, and caches.
- Texture-streaming cache holds streamed assets locally and can affect both storage and bandwidth use.
In a 2024 announcement, Activision described a phased effort ahead of Black Ops 6: reorganizing game files, improving the interface and download controls, separating Warzone, and expanding texture streaming. The company warned that the initial transition download could be large because it would reorganize existing files and add technology, while saying the completed installation would take up less space. Activision’s optimization announcement describes the plan, not a guarantee that every title or update will be smaller.

Modular installs and a separate Warzone download
Players can choose which supported games and modes to install instead of keeping every part of the Call of Duty library. At the Black Ops 6 launch, Warzone was not automatically included in the default premium-game download on most platforms; players could select it during installation or add it later, while existing Warzone players received its updates separately. Older games can be separated, too
Activision’s support page says Modern Warfare II moved outside the main Call of Duty experience as a standalone title. The page also said older Modern Warfare II files inside the Call of Duty experience were scheduled for automatic removal on August 7, 2025, to free storage, and warned that reinstalling could leave duplicate data. Why an optimization update can still be large
Changing how a game is packed or organized can require downloading or rebuilding large archives. A migration may replace or reorganize files, add shared-file structures, update the launcher, or verify existing data. The transfer and temporary free-space requirement can therefore be substantial even if the final installation is smaller.

A large number can also describe more than the game a player means to install. Activision said early Black Ops 6 preorder file-size figures included full installations of Modern Warfare II, Modern Warfare III, Warzone, relevant content packs, and all localized languages. Those figures could describe a maximal combined setup; they were not a typical standalone Black Ops 6 download estimate.

Windows Central reported that a Black Ops 7 Battle.net preload initially appeared to be about 175 GB; Activision later said the display was incorrect because of a bug and gave an expected update size of approximately 20–30 GB, depending on installed content. That was an initially displayed preload and an attributed estimate, not confirmation that every player downloaded exactly that amount. Windows Central’s report covers the incident.

What texture streaming trades for storage
Activision says less frequently used content can be delivered through a streaming cache rather than kept permanently installed. That can reduce the content stored in advance, but it shifts some demand to the internet connection. Depending on connection quality and the game, assets may take time to load or initially appear at lower quality. This is not the same as streaming the entire game.

- Optimized: higher-fidelity streamed content and increased bandwidth use.
- Minimal: reduced graphical quality and lower bandwidth use.
To change the setting, Activision documents this path: launch Call of Duty, open the menu, select Manage Files, select Graphics, scroll to On-Demand High-Quality Streaming, and choose Optimized or Minimal. The setting names and path are from Activision’s content-management guide; labels can differ by title or version.
How to install only the content you want
Activision’s current Black Ops 7 installation guidance documents content selection across Xbox, PlayStation, Battle.net, Steam, and Xbox PC. These paths reflect that guidance; labels and options can vary by title, platform, account state, or launcher version.

For individual modes in the in-game manager, Activision documents this sequence: launch Call of Duty, open the menu, select Manage Files, select Manage Files again, choose a content tile, then select Install, Uninstall, or Manage Files. For example, a player who has finished a campaign can remove it while keeping multiplayer.
Activision recommends using the in-game manager when removing full games or modes. A platform’s storage screen may expose individual files or handle packages differently, so deleting there may not have the same result. The current platform steps are collected in Activision’s Black Ops 7 installation guide; mode-management instructions are in its content-management guide.
What to do when a storage number looks alarming
- Check what the number measures. Look for whether it is a download, free-space requirement, final installation estimate, or combined library figure.
- Check what the estimate includes. Confirm whether it counts Warzone, other Call of Duty titles, modes, language packs, or content you do not plan to use.
- Choose only the games and modes you play. Use the platform installer or in-game Manage Files controls rather than assuming every content pack is required.
- Consider your connection before changing streaming settings. Minimal reduces bandwidth use compared with Optimized, while Optimized favors higher-fidelity streamed content.
- Allow for migrations and staging space. A large update can be temporary or involve repacking; do not assume the displayed download equals the space left occupied afterward.
- Verify an extraordinary preload figure. A displayed estimate can be erroneous, as the reported Black Ops 7 preload incident illustrates.
Does this mean future Call of Duty updates will be small?
No. Activision’s changes are intended to reduce unnecessary permanent content and give players more control, but update size still depends on what is installed, the platform and launcher, seasonal content, language packs, shared-file changes, and whether an update replaces or repacks large archives. First-time installs and migrations also differ from routine patches. The supported conclusion is that Activision has implemented measures to improve modularity and reduce storage use in some installations—not that every download is now small or that Call of Duty’s storage demands are solved.
