The move could benefit PC players if the new team delivers strong support without losing Halo’s identity; for now, that is a possibility, not a confirmed win.
What did Activision announce about Halo?
On September 22, 2026, Xbox said Activision would develop the next Halo title through a “new, purpose-built team” separate from ongoing Call of Duty development and plans. The announcement describes a change in who will develop the next game. It does not announce a PC-first strategy or explain the new team’s size, experience, or working arrangements.
Xbox also said a small Halo Studios team would continue supporting the community and games already in market. The announcement does not spell out how creative approval or operational responsibilities will be divided between the two teams.
Xbox reported 268 role eliminations across Halo Studios, other first-party studios, and Xbox Game Studios management and central functions. That is a company-wide figure across those areas, not a claim that 268 Halo Studios employees were laid off.

Will the next Halo game come to PC?
The September handoff announcement does not name platforms for the next Activision-led Halo game. It also gives no release date or commitments about PC controls, feature parity, or other PC-specific support. Until Xbox or Activision announces those details, PC players cannot treat a PC release—or any particular PC feature—as confirmed.
Why might the move appeal to PC players?
A purpose-built team could give the next game focused development attention, while Activision’s involvement could bring useful publishing and production capacity. Those are reasons the handoff might work out well, not evidence of what the game will be like. Activision president Rob Kostich said the goal was to make “the greatest Halo game ever” while staying true to the series. That is an ambition, not a guarantee of quality or a promise about PC support.

The other question is whether Halo’s identity will carry through the change. PC Gamer’s Morgan Park has argued that Halo Infinite stood apart from Call of Duty through its slower pace, mirrored loadouts, power weapons, and vertical maps. That is an assessment of what distinguishes the games, and it helps explain why some fans may be cautious about a new developer. It does not establish how Activision’s team will design the next Halo.
| What to weigh | What is established | What remains unknown |
|---|---|---|
| Development focus | Xbox says the new team is purpose-built and separate from ongoing Call of Duty development and plans. | Its size, composition, track record, and results. |
| PC support | The handoff announcement names no PC platform or feature commitment for the next game. | Whether it will come to PC, when it will launch, and what PC options it will offer. |
| Franchise continuity | Halo Studios will continue community and in-market game support. | How creative authority and day-to-day responsibilities will be shared. |
| Quality | Kostich has stated a goal for the game. | Whether the team can deliver on it. |
How is Halo: Campaign Evolved different?
Halo: Campaign Evolved is a separate title, not the upcoming Activision-led game. Xbox’s June 7, 2026 announcement gave Campaign Evolved a July 28, 2026 launch date and listed Windows PC and Steam among its platforms. Xbox also said that this game supports cross-play and cross-progression across Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, Steam, and PlayStation 5. Those details apply to Campaign Evolved only; they do not confirm platforms or features for Activision’s next Halo.
