As Activision’s head of inclusive game design, he connected that experience to a broader design question: who can participate in a game, and who can see a place for themselves in its world?
Coming out at work meant no longer editing everyday stories
Ledda told GamesBeat that he had known he was LGBTQ+ but stayed closeted at work. Around 2014, while dating a man, he noticed that he was changing ordinary accounts of his life into stories about spending time with “a friend.” That self-censorship prompted him to reconsider hiding part of himself.
With local HR partners, he helped organize a Pride celebration at his studio and came out there. He recalled feeling afraid and vulnerable beforehand. Afterwards, colleagues treated him with respect and asked more open questions about LGBTQ+ experiences.
After Ledda married, he brought his husband to the studio for lunch. Colleagues surprised the couple with a wedding celebration and cake. Ledda described the gestures as making him feel welcome and free to be himself—and as part of what inspired him to create that feeling for players. These are his recollections of personal experiences at his studio, not evidence that every Activision Blizzard workplace had the same culture.

What Ledda means by inclusive game design
Ledda described inclusive design as a shift from asking only whether a game runs efficiently to asking what is being made, why, and for whom. The aim, in his account, is to help players feel that they belong in game worlds. He framed the work as ongoing curiosity, education, and empathy, rather than a fixed checklist.
His shorthand for the connection between accessibility and quality was: “Our approach is that accessible design is good design.” The principle treats accessibility as part of making a game, not simply as a final layer of options. It also asks teams to learn about barriers and consider how design choices affect players’ ability to take part.

How accessibility learning appeared in the games discussed
The interview used examples from different games to illustrate how a team’s understanding of accessibility can develop. Ledda recalled that work on Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 Remastered began with a relatively narrow idea of accessibility features, such as subtitles, before the team received more accessibility education.
For Diablo IV, he pointed to features including colorblind modes and highlighting players and items. He also said that a fully blind gamer completed the game without sighted assistance. That achievement is Ledda’s account in the interview; the player and circumstances were not independently verified in the reporting available here.

GamesBeat’s related coverage described Activision Blizzard’s first Accessible Player Experiences (APX) training with AbleGamers as taking place in 2020. Later company activities reported by GamesBeat included trained developers, workshops, learning sessions, consultation, and an inclusive game design council. These descriptions show the kinds of learning and support the company said it used; they are not an independent assessment of their impact.
Representation can make room for different stories
Ledda’s examples of LGBTQ+ representation included Tracer and her relationship with Emily, as well as Soldier: 76 in Overwatch. He used them to discuss stories with different tones and degrees of visibility. The broader point was that representation should accommodate varied experiences rather than reduce LGBTQ+ lives to one template.

He also recalled seeing Tracer imagery on an Activision bus at LA Pride while holding his husband’s hand. He described the crowd’s response as a moment when game communities and real-world communities met. The anecdote illustrates the personal meaning a character can have for a player; it does not by itself establish how representative or welcoming the industry as a whole is.

GamesBeat’s introduction to the interview attributed a figure of 17% of gamers identifying as LGBTQ+ to a recent GLAAD study. Because the original study was not located in the reporting examined here, the figure should be understood as GamesBeat’s attribution, not as an independently checked statistic in this article. It does not establish a rate of acceptance or representation across studios.

The interview is a first-person account alongside descriptions of company initiatives. It offers a useful view of how one design leader connected workplace belonging, developer education, accessibility, and representation. It is not an independent audit of Activision Blizzard’s workplaces or games, nor a survey of conditions across the video-game industry.
