If Windows says addplwizres.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, repair or reinstall the Autodesk application that reports the error rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
This is not normally a Windows system file. The safest repair is to restore it from the matching Autodesk installer, installation media, Autodesk account, or managed company deployment.

What addplwizres.dll does
The file is identified as Autodesk Hardcopy Add-A-Plotter Resource DLL and belongs to the Autodesk Hardcopy Subsystem. It supports the Add-A-Plotter Wizard, a tool used by AutoCAD and related Autodesk desktop products to configure plotters and printer devices.
Older Autodesk products that may contain related Hardcopy components include legacy AutoCAD-family installations and products such as Mechanical Desktop. That does not mean every AutoCAD release includes this exact file. The required file depends on the product, release, installer, and installed features.

Common messages include:
- “This application failed to start because addplwizres.dll was not found.”
- “The file addplwizres.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “A required component is missing: addplwizres.dll. Please install the application again.”
- “Error loading addplwizres.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The program can’t start because addplwizres.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “addplwizres.dll is not designed to run on Windows.”
The wording is produced by Windows or the application loader. It does not necessarily identify the underlying cause. In particular, “the specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency used by the DLL is missing, even when addplwizres.dll itself is present.
Before you start
- Write down the name and version of the Autodesk application in the error.
- Close AutoCAD and other Autodesk programs.
- Save drawings and back up custom plotter configurations if the application still opens intermittently.
- Do not download
addplwizres.dllfrom a random DLL website. - Do not copy the file into both
C:WindowsSystem32andC:WindowsSysWOW64.
A legacy Autodesk DLL may be 32-bit even when Windows is 64-bit. That is normal for a 32-bit Autodesk application. System32 and SysWOW64 are managed Windows locations with different architecture rules; they are not general-purpose storage folders for application DLLs. The Autodesk installer should place the file beside the executable or in the application’s own directory.
Fix 1: Repair the Autodesk installation
Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes
This is the best first fix when the application is still installed. Repair restores missing or altered program files from the original installation source.
Windows 11
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the Autodesk product named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Modify, Change, or Uninstall, depending on the installer.
- If the Autodesk maintenance window appears, choose Repair.
- Follow the prompts and allow the process to complete.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the Autodesk application and repeat the action that produced the error.
Windows 10
- Right-click Start and select Apps and Features, or open Control Panel.
- In Control Panel, select Programs and Features.
- Select the affected Autodesk product.
- Choose Uninstall/Change, Change, or Modify.
- Select Repair when the Autodesk installer offers it.
- Complete the repair and restart the computer.
- Test AutoCAD or the related Autodesk application again.
A successful repair usually allows the application to start and restores the Add-A-Plotter functions. If the repair reports that source files are unavailable, provide the original installation media or use the official Autodesk installer associated with the product.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If there is no Repair option, continue with the reinstall procedure below. Some newer Autodesk installation experiences do not provide the older repair workflow and require an uninstall followed by a fresh installation.
Fix 2: Reinstall the affected Autodesk product
Time needed: 20 to 60 minutes
Reinstalling is the definitive fix when files were deleted, the installation was partially removed, or the product’s installer database is damaged.
- Sign in to the Autodesk account that owns the product, or locate the original company deployment package or installation media.
- Close all Autodesk applications.
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps and Features in Windows 10.
- Select the affected Autodesk product.
- Choose Uninstall and follow the Autodesk removal prompts.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Run the official Autodesk installer.
- Install the same product and release required by your drawings, plugins, and company workflow.
- Restart Windows again.
- Test the application before restoring optional plugins or custom files.
For older products, the installer may be available through Control Panel, original media, a deployment image, or an Autodesk account. Use the matching source rather than copying a DLL from another computer. A different release may contain a different build of the Hardcopy component and may not work with the application that raised the error.
For Autodesk products using a newer installer, uninstalling and reinstalling is generally the expected replacement for the old Repair option.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
Security software can quarantine an application file after an update, a mistaken detection, or a change in file reputation. Quarantine does not prove that the DLL was malware, and it does not prove that the file was safe.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry mentioning
addplwizres.dllor the Autodesk installation folder. - Check the detection name, file path, and date.
- If the file belongs to the still-installed Autodesk product and the detection is clearly a false positive, follow your security software’s review process.
- Restore the file only if you trust the Autodesk installation and the security product permits the action.
- Immediately repair the Autodesk product using Fix 1.
Do not restore the file if the security product continues to identify it as malicious, if it came from an unknown location, or if the Autodesk program has already been removed. Contact the security software vendor or your administrator instead.
Repairing the application after a quarantine is preferable to relying on a manually restored copy because the installer can restore related files and dependencies too.
Fix 4: Check whether the Add-A-Plotter shortcut is the real problem
Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes
A missing Add-A-Plotter shortcut is different from a missing addplwizres.dll file. Recreating a shortcut will not restore a missing resource DLL, but it can fix a situation where AutoCAD itself works and only the wizard shortcut has disappeared.
- Start AutoCAD.
- At the command line, enter
PLOTTERMANAGER. - Press Enter.
- Locate the AutoCAD installation folder in File Explorer.
- Find
addplwiz.exe. - Right-click
addplwiz.exeand drag it to the appropriate Plotters folder. - Release the mouse button and choose Create shortcuts here.
If addplwiz.exe is absent, do not create a shortcut to a similarly named file. Repair or reinstall AutoCAD instead.
If the wizard opens but crashes while adding a plotter, an incompatible legacy HDI plotter driver or a damaged installation may be responsible. Update the plotter driver from its manufacturer or repair the Autodesk product.
Fix 5: Update the relevant printer or plotter driver
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
This fix applies when AutoCAD opens but the Add-A-Plotter Wizard fails during device setup. It is not the primary repair for a genuinely missing addplwizres.dll.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, or the category containing the affected device.
- Right-click the printer or plotter.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Install the driver Windows finds.
- Restart AutoCAD and test the wizard.
For a manufacturer driver, download it only from the printer or plotter manufacturer’s official support channel, then install the release matching your Windows architecture and device.
Manually identifying an old plotter driver can involve checking model names, operating-system support, and 32-bit versus 64-bit packages. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; its full version performs the driver installation, but reinstalling the Autodesk product remains the definitive fix when the DLL itself is missing.
If the wizard still crashes after a driver update, return to Autodesk repair or reinstall. A driver update cannot recreate a deleted application resource file.
Fix 6: Run DISM and System File Checker
Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes
Windows integrity commands are useful when other Windows components are also failing, applications crash broadly, or system servicing is damaged. They normally repair Windows components and protected Windows files, not a third-party Autodesk DLL.

Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow and inconclusive. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for Windows problems and show what needs attention; repairs are performed by the full version, and Autodesk repair or reinstall is still required when the missing file belongs to the Autodesk application.
If SFC reports files it could not repair, review the Windows repair results and continue with the Autodesk reinstall rather than placing a downloaded DLL in a system folder.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 7: Check the application path and architecture
Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes
A wrong-version or wrong-architecture DLL can produce the same symptoms as a missing file.
- Right-click the Autodesk shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Review the Target field to identify the executable and installation path.
- Open that folder in File Explorer.
- Check whether
addplwizres.dllis located with the Autodesk application or its related Hardcopy component. - Do not replace it with a file from another release.
- Do not copy it to both Windows system directories.
- Repair or reinstall the product if the file is absent or appears to belong to another installation.
Available secondary metadata describes this legacy component as a 32-bit Win32 DLL, but that does not establish one universal version, size, path, or build for every Autodesk product. A 64-bit Windows computer can run a 32-bit AutoCAD application, but the DLL must match that application.
If the file exists and Windows still reports that the specified module cannot be found, a dependency may be missing. Repairing the complete Autodesk installation is safer than trying to identify and replace dependencies individually.
Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by certain COM or ActiveX components. addplwizres.dll is a resource DLL, not automatically a self-registering component.
Do not run commands such as:
regsvr32 addplwizres.dll
Registering the file will not restore it, repair a damaged Autodesk installation, or fix a missing dependency. A registration error is expected if the DLL does not provide the required entry point.
Why the error happens
The most likely causes are:
| Cause | Appropriate response |
|---|---|
| Incomplete or corrupted Autodesk installation | Repair, then reinstall if necessary |
| Accidental deletion or failed update | Repair the exact Autodesk product |
| Antivirus quarantine | Review quarantine, then repair from a trusted installer |
| Partial Autodesk uninstall | Reinstall the product or remove its stale startup entry |
| Wrong-version DLL copied into the folder | Remove the mismatched replacement and reinstall |
| Missing dependency | Repair the complete application installation |
| Incompatible legacy plotter driver | Update the driver and repair AutoCAD |
| Windows component corruption | Run DISM and SFC as secondary diagnostics |
| Stale startup entry after removal | Uninstall the orphaned product or remove its obsolete startup entry |
Windows corruption is possible, but it is less likely when only an Autodesk plotting component is affected. Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET repairs are not the default answer unless the error separately identifies one of those runtimes.
If no Autodesk software remains
A missing-DLL message can come from a stale startup entry after Autodesk was removed.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an Autodesk entry you no longer use.
- Confirm that the product has been removed and that no required Autodesk software depends on it.
- Disable the obsolete startup item.
- Restart Windows.
Also check Task Scheduler for an obsolete Autodesk task, but do not delete tasks belonging to a current product. If you are unsure which application owns the entry, leave it enabled and reinstall the named Autodesk product instead.
If the error remains after reinstalling
- Open Event Viewer from the Start menu.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Find the error at the time the Autodesk program failed.
- Note the executable named in the event.
- Compare its path with the installed Autodesk product.
- Test the program from a new Windows user profile.
- Temporarily remove third-party Autodesk plugins and test again.
- Perform a clean Autodesk uninstall and reinstall if the installation path or product registration is inconsistent.
Back up drawings, templates, plotter configurations, and license information before a clean removal. If the application is managed by an employer, have the administrator redeploy the approved Autodesk package rather than installing a separate copy.
FAQ
Is addplwizres.dll a Windows file?
No reliable Microsoft Windows component information identifies it as a Windows-owned file. It is associated with Autodesk Hardcopy Subsystem and the Add-A-Plotter functionality.
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteShould I download addplwizres.dll from the internet?
No. Random DLL downloads may contain malware, the wrong Autodesk build, or the wrong architecture. They also leave the damaged installation and any missing dependencies unresolved. Use the matching Autodesk installer, repair operation, installation media, or managed deployment.
Does the file belong in System32 or SysWOW64?
There is no universal placement rule for this file. The Autodesk installer determines where its application components belong. Do not copy it into both folders.
Will SFC restore addplwizres.dll?
Normally, no. SFC repairs protected Windows files. It is useful for broader Windows corruption, but Autodesk repair or reinstall is the correct way to restore an Autodesk DLL.
Can regsvr32 fix the error?
Usually not. A resource DLL is not automatically a self-registering COM DLL, so regsvr32 is not an appropriate general repair.
Is a missing Add-A-Plotter shortcut the same problem?
No. A shortcut can be recreated when addplwiz.exe exists. A missing addplwizres.dll requires repair or reinstallation of the Autodesk product.
What is the safest final fix?
Repair the exact Autodesk application first. If repair is unavailable or fails, uninstall and reinstall it from an official Autodesk source that matches the product and release.
