The safest repair is to identify the program showing the error, then repair or reinstall the matching Net Monitor for Employees component from the vendor’s official installer. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random DLL website or copy one into System32.
1. Identify which program is requesting advctrl.dll
Time needed: 5 minutes
The filename alone does not prove that every advctrl.dll error comes from the same release. First identify the executable that fails.
- Read the full error window and note the application name.
- If the message appears briefly, open Event Viewer:
- Press
Windows + X. - Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs and select Application.
- Look for an error at the time the program failed.
- Record the Faulting application name and Faulting module name.
- Check whether Net Monitor for Employees Pro is installed:
- Press
Windows + I. - Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for Net Monitor for Employees Pro or Net Monitor for Employees.

Look for advctrl.dll and nearby Net Monitor files such as nmep_ctrlagent.exe, NLSAgtConfig.exe, or devman.exe.
If the file is present, do not replace it immediately. The message “The specified module could not be found” can mean that advctrl.dll exists but one of its dependent files is missing.
2. Repair or reinstall Net Monitor for Employees
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
Net Monitor installations can include separate Console and Remote Agent components. Install or repair the component that originally used the missing file rather than copying a DLL from another computer.
Try the installed repair option
- Open Settings with
Windows + I. - Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Find Net Monitor for Employees Pro.
- Select the three-dot menu, if shown.
- Choose Modify, Repair, or a similar maintenance option.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Start the application or service that originally reported the error.
If no repair option is available, continue with a clean reinstall.

- Obtain the current Net Monitor for Employees installer from EduIQ or the product’s official Network Lookout distribution site.
- Do not use a DLL-only download. The complete installer supplies the application files and their matching dependencies.
- Close the Net Monitor console and stop any related Net Monitor services if the installer requests it.
- In Settings → Apps, uninstall the existing Net Monitor installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the official installer as administrator:
- Right-click the installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Choose the required installation type, such as the Console or Remote Agent.
- Finish the installation and restart again.
Afterward, confirm that the file is located under the Net Monitor installation directory, not in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
If the error disappears and the program starts normally, the damaged or incomplete application installation was the cause. If the same message remains, continue below instead of downloading another copy.

3. Check whether Microsoft Defender quarantined the file
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
A security scan may remove or quarantine an application DLL. Restore it only when you have verified that it came from the original, trusted Net Monitor installer.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Filter or review the entries for quarantined items.
- Open any detection that names
advctrl.dllor a Net Monitor executable. - Check the detected path, detection name, and source.
- Choose Restore only if the file came from a verified vendor installation and you have confirmed the detection is a false positive.
Microsoft also provides a command-line method from an elevated Command Prompt:
MpCmdRun.exe -Restore -ListAll
To restore a specific quarantined filename:
MpCmdRun.exe -Restore -Name <filename>
Use the exact filename shown by Defender. Do not disable antivirus protection merely to accept an unverified DLL. If Defender detects the file again, leave it quarantined, run a full scan, and obtain a clean installer from the vendor.
Reinstalling Net Monitor after checking quarantine is usually safer than restoring an isolated file, because the installer can restore the complete matching dependency set.
4. Check architecture and release matching
Time needed: 5 minutes
Publicly indexed records describe an older advctrl.dll sample as a 32-bit Win32 DLL, but that information does not establish the architecture or version of every current Net Monitor release.
A 32-bit application generally needs its matching 32-bit dependency, even when Windows itself is 64-bit. A random 64-bit DLL with the same filename is not a valid substitute.

Check the application architecture this way:
- Open the Net Monitor installation folder.
- Right-click the executable named in the error or Event Viewer.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab and record the available product information.
- Avoid mixing files from different Net Monitor releases, computers, or installation types.
If you recently upgraded, rolled back, or copied the application folder manually, uninstall the damaged installation and reinstall one complete vendor package. A matching reinstall is more reliable than selecting a DLL based only on its filename.
5. Test for a missing dependent DLL
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
Sometimes Windows reports the name of the DLL it was loading even though the real missing file is a dependency. This is especially possible when advctrl.dll is present in the expected Net Monitor directory.
- Open the folder containing
advctrl.dll. - Check whether the file has a recent modified date consistent with the rest of the application.
- Start the affected Net Monitor component again.
- Look in Event Viewer → Windows Logs → Application for a more specific application error.
- Note the full executable path, module name, and error code if one is shown.
Do not install Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET solely because the filename ends in .dll. No reliable evidence connects this particular file to those packages. Install a runtime only when the application vendor specifically requires it or the installer identifies it as a prerequisite.
6. Repair Windows components when Windows has broader problems
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
DISM and SFC repair Windows-protected components. They will not normally recreate a private application DLL installed under Program Files (x86), so use them when Windows has other corruption symptoms, not as the primary fix for a missing Net Monitor file.

- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test Net Monitor again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC says it could not repair some files, follow the repair-source guidance in Microsoft’s System File Checker documentation and review the CBS log. If SFC reports no integrity violations but advctrl.dll is still missing, return to the Net Monitor repair or reinstall step.

7. Do not use regsvr32 unless the vendor requires it
Time needed: 2 minutes
regsvr32 is not a general-purpose DLL repair command. It applies to DLL or OCX files designed for COM or ActiveX registration and typically requires a DllRegisterServer entry point.

There is no reliable public evidence that advctrl.dll is a self-registering COM or ActiveX library. It appears to be a private dependency loaded by Net Monitor executables.

Therefore, do not run:
regsvr32 advctrl.dll
A registration error does not repair a missing or mismatched application dependency. Use regsvr32 only if an official vendor instruction specifically tells you to register this file.
8. Update drivers only when the evidence points to a driver problem
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A driver update is not the normal fix for advctrl.dll. Consider it only if Device Manager shows a warning icon, the Net Monitor agent interacts with hardware that recently stopped working, or Event Viewer identifies a separate driver failure.
- Press
Windows + X. - Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories related to the affected hardware.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and choose Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Use Update Driver and select Search automatically for drivers, or obtain the correct driver from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Do not remove a working driver simply because advctrl.dll is missing. If you update manually, record the original driver first so you can roll back through the Driver tab if necessary.

A copy left behind after uninstall can also trigger errors if a shortcut, scheduled task, or service still points to the old Net Monitor directory. Remove obsolete startup entries only after confirming that the old application is no longer required.
Safe sources and final checks
Do not download advctrl.dll from a generic DLL repository. Unknown files may contain malware, match the wrong architecture, belong to another release, or leave the actual missing dependency unresolved. Do not copy a replacement into System32 or SysWOW64.

Use the official Net Monitor installer from EduIQ or its official product distribution site. After reinstalling:
- Confirm the erroring executable belongs to Net Monitor.
- Confirm
