Meanwhile, PC Gamer reported that Anthropic urged the Pope’s advisers to take possible AI-model consciousness seriously. The sharpest recent exchange is Leo’s October 2 statement on art; the broader disagreement concerns what AI is and how society should govern it.
What did the Pope say about AI art?
In an address to artists on October 2, 2026, Pope Leo XIV said it was urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. He described the difference as “ontological” as well as aesthetic, arguing that AI-generated output relies on statistical calculation from existing images, while human art carries a uniquely human quality.
Leo also said, “Algorithms lack the spark of the human,” and called for the Church to renew its alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard what is human. These are the Pope’s ethical and theological claims about creativity, not a settled technical consensus on how AI systems work.

What is the disagreement about?
There are two related questions: whether AI should be treated as potentially conscious, and what role it should play in human life and culture. The public accounts suggest different emphases, not an organized two-sided fight.

What is Magnifica Humanitas?
Magnifica Humanitas is Leo XIV’s encyclical on safeguarding the human person in the age of AI. He signed it on May 15, 2026; the Vatican presented and promulgated it on May 25. Its central concerns include human dignity, responsibility and the social effects of AI.
The encyclical is not simply anti-technology: it acknowledges that technological development can improve living conditions. Its warning is that tools can also cause harm when they are not directed toward the good. Leo calls for “prudence, rigorous evaluation and even, at times, a slower pace in adopting AI,” describing that restraint as responsible care rather than opposition to progress.

Those examples show why the encyclical treats accountability and governance as practical questions, not just abstract concerns.

How did the story unfold?
- May 15, 2026: Leo signed Magnifica Humanitas. The Vatican noted that the date marked the 135th anniversary of the promulgation of Rerum Novarum.
- May 25, 2026: The Vatican presented and promulgated the encyclical. In the accompanying address, Leo discussed concerns raised by scientists, engineers, public officials, parents and teachers.
- May 2026, as later reported: PC Gamer said The New York Times had reported that Anthropic lobbied the Pope’s advisers to take possible AI-model consciousness seriously. The report remains attributed to PC Gamer’s account; the linked Times article could not be independently reviewed.
- October 2, 2026: Leo made his remarks about human art and machine output in an address to artists. PC Gamer published Tyler Wilde’s opinion recap the same day, including a report that former White House technology adviser Dean Ball criticized the encyclical’s approach to regulation. That criticism is likewise attributed to PC Gamer’s account.
Is this really a “beef”?
“AI guys beefing with the pope” is a playful framing of a developing debate, not the name of a formal proceeding or a settled schism. The Pope’s statements make a sustained case for human dignity, caution and responsibility in AI. The reported approach to his advisers raises a different question—whether models might warrant serious consideration as possible conscious systems—but the available account does not establish a direct public exchange between Leo and Anthropic.
