AI can make some old videos look cleaner or larger, but it cannot reliably recover image detail that was never captured. The best results come from identifying the source and its defects, choosing only the processing your footage needs, and testing a short representative clip before enhancing the full video.

What AI video restoration can—and cannot—do

“Restoration” is a collection of separate operations, not a single make-it-HD button. Depending on the software and footage, you may be able to deinterlace, reduce noise, stabilize shaky motion, sharpen or restore focus, upscale, or interpolate frames. Topaz documents these kinds of capabilities for its desktop Video product, along with distinct models and workflows for different tasks (Topaz Video; Topaz Video documentation).

Upscaling creates a larger output frame; it does not establish that the extra visible detail existed in the original. Enhancement models can produce a sharper or smoother-looking image, but may also invent texture, soften faces, alter grain, or create temporal flicker. Topaz’s documentation for one enhancement model specifically cautions that it is not a restoration model and does not remove film hairs and scratches or generate details (Topaz enhancement filter documentation). Treat processed output as an interpretation of the source, not proof of authentic recovered information.

Identify the source before choosing a tool

Start with the least-processed digitized file you have. Keep it untouched, make a separate working copy, and record the source’s resolution, frame rate, aspect ratio, and whether its frames are progressive or interlaced. If the video came from tape or another analog source, check the digitizing settings or inspect the image for comb-like horizontal edges around moving subjects; those can indicate interlacing, though a preview alone may not settle the question.

Interlaced footage contains fields captured at different moments, so treating it like ordinary progressive video can leave motion artifacts. Topaz documents Dione models for deinterlacing and distinguishes progressive from interlaced input in its workflow documentation (Topaz interlacing and Dione documentation). Choose a deinterlacing path only when the source calls for it; applying it unnecessarily can change the image without solving a real problem.

Match the operation to the defect

What you see Operation to consider What to watch for
Visible combing on moving edges in interlaced footage Deinterlacing Check motion for jagged edges or lost smoothness; use a workflow intended for interlaced input.
Grain, sensor noise, or compression noise Denoising Strong reduction can erase skin, hair, fabric, and film texture or make movement look waxy.
Unwanted camera shake Stabilization Stabilization may crop or reframe the image; confirm that the result does not cut off important content.
Soft or low-resolution image Careful sharpening or upscaling Look for halos, false texture, plastic-looking faces, and detail that changes between frames.
A deliberate need for smoother motion or a higher frame rate Frame interpolation Generated in-between frames can warp fast motion, faces, or objects crossing one another; it changes the original motion character.

Topaz lists separate models and presets for operations such as denoising, upscaling, and interpolation. Its “4K & 60 FPS” preset, for example, uses Proteus for 4K upscaling and Apollo for frame interpolation, while a denoise preset uses Nyx (Topaz preset guide). These are product settings, not evidence that 4K or 60 fps is appropriate for every source. A higher output resolution or frame rate is not automatically a more faithful restoration.

A cautious workflow for restoring an old video

  1. Preserve the original. Keep an untouched source file and work from a duplicate. Do not overwrite the only copy with an enhanced export.
  2. Inspect the whole source. Note its resolution, frame rate, aspect ratio, and interlaced or progressive format. Identify the main defects rather than treating every visible imperfection at once.
  3. Choose a representative excerpt. Use a short section that includes motion, faces, fine texture, and the most difficult defects. A clean, static opening is a poor test if the rest of the video contains fast movement or noisy shadows.
  4. Process only the relevant defect first. If the source is interlaced, test deinterlacing. If noise is the main issue, test denoising conservatively. Add stabilization only when shake is a problem, and consider upscaling after checking that the image still looks natural.
  5. Preview with task-specific controls. Model choice and settings depend on the footage. Topaz documents distinct model paths and preview-oriented settings; use a preview to compare alternatives before committing to a full render (Topaz Video documentation).
  6. Compare fairly. View the original and output at normal viewing size and enlarged scale. Check still frames for texture and faces, then watch moving sections for flicker, warping, or details that appear and disappear. Prefer a restrained result over a more dramatic but unstable one.
  7. Export and verify. Confirm that the finished file has the intended frame size, aspect ratio, frame rate, and audio. Keep the source alongside the output so you can revisit the decision if a later workflow improves.

Choosing a tool and processing workflow

Topaz Video desktop application

Topaz describes Video as a Mac and Windows desktop product with denoising, upscaling, focus restoration, stabilization, and frame interpolation, with workflows aimed in part at archival and low-resolution material (Topaz Video). Its documentation provides distinct model paths, including Dione for interlaced footage. This can suit someone who wants task-specific controls and previews in a desktop application. Check the current system requirements and terms on the vendor’s pages before committing; product capabilities and availability can change.

Topaz workflows inside other applications

The documented DaVinci Resolve plugin requires DaVinci Resolve Studio. Topaz also warns that performance and interface responsiveness can be reduced when upscaling by three to four times (Topaz Resolve plugin documentation). The Topaz for Premiere panel is described as a free UXP panel that routes project media to Topaz Cloud; using it for processing requires a Topaz account and paid cloud credits (Topaz Video). These dependencies matter if you already edit in a host application or need local rather than cloud processing.

Adobe Firefly online upscaler

Adobe documents an online video upscaler in Firefly powered by Topaz Astra. Adobe says the result can be downloaded as an MP4 or handed off to Premiere or Firefly’s video editor (Adobe Firefly video upscaler). That establishes a documented online workflow, not that it will produce better results than another option on your particular clip. Check the current availability and account or plan requirements in Adobe’s interface.

Compatibility, cost, and fidelity checks

Before choosing a workflow, check whether it fits the footage and your setup: interlaced versus progressive handling, desktop versus cloud processing, operating-system and host-application requirements, access to model controls and previews, and current pricing or credit terms. Then judge fidelity on your own representative excerpt; official feature descriptions do not substitute for a clip-specific comparison. The cited product pages do not establish a general benchmark for restoration quality, so a universal “best” tool or quantified improvement would be misleading.

Common problems and how to respond

The result looks sharp but artificial

Reduce sharpening or enhancement strength, compare fine texture and faces with the source, and test a less aggressive model. A convincing edge is not necessarily authentic detail.

Faces or textures look waxy

Back off denoising or detail restoration. Denoising can remove the very texture that makes an old image look natural; a modest reduction may preserve more of the source’s character.

Motion flickers or objects warp

Inspect the video over time rather than judging a single frame. Try a different model or lower the effect, and avoid interpolation unless smoother motion is specifically needed. Generated frames can fail around fast movement and occlusions.

Combing remains on moving edges

Check whether the source is interlaced and whether the workflow actually applied an appropriate deinterlacing step. Do not assume an upscaler or denoiser also deinterlaces correctly.

Upscaling takes too long or the editor becomes unresponsive

Test a smaller representative excerpt and a lower scale factor before rendering the full project. Topaz specifically warns that its Resolve plugin can reduce performance and UI responsiveness at three-to-four-times upscaling (Topaz Resolve plugin documentation).
