The Akko 3098N remains a practical choice for anyone who wants a numpad, function row, wireless flexibility and hot-swappable switches without the desk footprint of a conventional full-size keyboard. The Black&Gold configuration is listed at $129.99 on Akko’s U.S. storefront (price observed August 18, 2026), but its older software and compressed 1800 layout make that price difficult to justify unless those specific strengths matter to you.
This review covers the North American ANSI Black&Gold configuration listed with TTC Silent Red V3 linear switches, ASA-profile double-shot PBT keycaps and tri-mode connectivity. Other 3098N colors and regional SKUs use different switches, so typing and sound impressions should not be generalized across the entire family.

What the 3098N layout is like
The 3098N uses the 98% or 1800 format: it keeps a numpad, function row, arrows and navigation keys, then removes much of the empty spacing found on a traditional full-size board. “98%” and “1800” are often used interchangeably, although exact key placement varies between models.

- Black&Gold Theme - The strong contract of the conventional black and the shiny gold together feels low-key but full of energy which let us think of black earth with golden wheat fields. Akko newly upgraded v3 Pro creamy yellow switches now feature alloy copper and palladium gold contact, which provide better conductivity, stability, and durability
- Multiple Connection Modes – Akko 3098B creamy keyboard is equipped with Beken multi-modes controller chip that is capable of switching between 2.4Ghz, Bluetooth 5.0 and USB-C wired connection mode for multi-device users. It is aimed for maintaining consistent and stable connectivity with a 3000mAh rechargeable battery
- PBT Keycaps&Hot-Swappable - Comes with Akko Cherry profile, PBT double-shot keycaps are extremely durable and resistant to wear, and the legends are particularly vibrant, sharp with high contrast. It also offers premium gaming 5-pin hot-swappable sockets with plate foam, allowing users to swap desirable switches afterwards
- Custom RGB & Keys - All keys can be re-mapped. The RGB keyboard with number pad has built-in RGB backlit with customizable light animation effects (per-key RGB supported) through Akko Cloud driver.
- Mac & Win - Akko 3098B mechanical gaming keyboard supports both Windows and Mac system with easy switch on the back of the keyboard
This is an excellent arrangement for spreadsheets, finance, coding with frequent number entry and games that use a dedicated keypad. The main typing block sits closer to the numpad, saving desk width. The trade-off is a compressed navigation cluster and less familiar spacing around keys such as Home, End, Insert and the right Shift. Check a diagram of the exact SKU before buying replacement keycaps.
At roughly 382mm wide, it is meaningfully smaller than a standard full-size keyboard while retaining full-size functionality. The plastic case has a substantial, desk-stable feel, and the two-level feet let you adjust the typing angle. Tall ASA caps are more sculpted than laptop or low-profile keys; many mechanical-keyboard users like the pronounced shape, while newcomers may need an adjustment period. A wrist rest is optional rather than required.
Build quality, stabilizers and included hardware
Akko’s design uses a rigid plastic chassis with visible internal dampening foam. The weight is enough to keep the keyboard planted during normal typing. Construction is functional rather than luxurious: expect a conventional case seam and a solid plastic finish instead of an aluminum enclosure.
Large keys such as Space, Enter, Backspace and Shift are the parts most likely to reveal stabilizer rattle or case resonance. The available reviews describe a sturdy chassis but do not establish a universal noise level for every switch and production batch. The USB-C connection and receiver storage should be checked on the exact retail package; accessories can vary by region. Tom’s Hardware reported that its sample did not include a switch puller, so budget for one if you plan to modify the board (Tom’s Hardware).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsKeycaps and stock typing feel
The Black&Gold product page specifies double-shot PBT keycaps in Akko’s ASA profile. PBT resists the oily shine that develops on cheaper ABS caps, and double-shot legends are durable. Legend centering and texture can still vary by batch, so inspect the set if cosmetic consistency is critical.
TTC Silent Red V3 is a linear switch. Akko lists approximately 45gf ±10gf end force, 1.9mm ±0.6mm pre-travel and roughly 3.7mm total travel. It should feel smooth and relatively light, with no tactile bump or click. “Silent” is a relative term: Akko explicitly says these switches remain louder than a membrane keyboard, even though they are quieter than many conventional mechanical switches.

Published impressions disagree. WePC praised the linear feel, while Tom’s Hardware disliked the stock Silent Reds in its 3098N and preferred the board after installing Kailh Box White switches. That difference is best understood as a combination of switch preference and SKU variation, not proof that every 3098N feels identical. Confirm the included switch before ordering.
Hot-swapping and switch upgrades
The PCB uses north-facing LEDs and 5-pin hot-swap sockets rated by Akko for up to 2,000 cycles. Three-pin switches also fit, while five-pin switches use their additional alignment legs. This makes the 3098N a useful starting point for experimenting with silent linears, heavier tactiles or clicky switches.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Use a proper switch puller and align every pin vertically.
- Test one switch before replacing the entire board.
- Never force a switch into the socket; bent pins are the most common installation failure.
- Check LED orientation and housing clearance with unusual switch designs.
- Review Akko’s warranty terms before modifying the PCB.
Hot-swap support is a confirmed hardware feature; long-term socket durability and effortless swapping are not established by a published endurance test.
Wireless, Bluetooth and wired operation
You can use USB-C, the included 2.4GHz receiver or Bluetooth 5.0. The manual says Bluetooth can store up to four hosts. During first pairing, the keyboard appears approximately as “Akko 3098 -1”; after pairing, hold Fn+1 through Fn+4 for at least four seconds to switch profiles.
- Enable Bluetooth on the computer, tablet or phone.
- Put the keyboard in Bluetooth mode with its physical mode control.
- Select “Akko 3098 -1” in the host’s Bluetooth list.
- Pair, then assign additional hosts to the remaining profiles.
- If reconnection fails, remove the keyboard from the host, clear its old pairing record and pair again.
The keyboard sleeps after more than 10 minutes of inactivity according to the manual, although operating-system power saving can alter timing. The cited WePC review reported no noticeable Bluetooth or 2.4GHz latency for ordinary use and recommended wired mode as a precaution for ultra-competitive gaming. That is a practical assessment, not a measured latency guarantee. Tom’s Hardware used its 3098N for multiple long days over 2.4GHz before recharging.
Wireless software configuration should be done over USB-C. Test the receiver’s range and sleep reconnection at your desk, since nearby Wi-Fi and other 2.4GHz devices can affect reliability.

Battery life and RGB
The battery is rated at 3000mAh. Tom’s Hardware reported Akko’s estimated 30–40-hour wireless figure for the 3098N and observed roughly two to three long days with RGB enabled. Treat both numbers as conditional: brightness, animation, connection mode, sleep behavior, firmware and battery age all change runtime.
RGB effects can be changed with hardware shortcuts for brightness, speed, direction and effect selection. More extensive per-key customization requires software and a wired connection. Because the ASA caps are opaque, light is seen mainly around the keycaps rather than shining brightly through the legends. WePC and Tom’s Hardware both characterized the lighting as usable but less vivid than a board with translucent shine-through caps.

This is the 3098N’s biggest platform drawback. Akko’s current support guidance identifies Akko Wireless Manager 1.0 exclusively for the 3098N. Do not assume that VIA, QMK, Akko Cloud Driver or software for the 3098B or 3098S will work simply because those products appear in Akko’s catalog (Akko support).
Use the model-specific download, connect by cable and keep the original firmware information. Historical WePC coverage mentioned installation problems and antivirus warnings around an older package; that report is not evidence that the current download is malicious, but it does illustrate why you should avoid random driver files.

Macro limitations
The manual describes hardware macros rather than a modern visual editor:
- Record and configure macros in wired mode.
- Bluetooth and 2.4GHz can trigger saved macros but cannot configure them.
- Esc, Fn, Left Win and Right Win cannot be programmed.
- Simultaneous key presses are recorded sequentially.
- Custom delays between actions are unavailable.
That is adequate for simple shortcuts, but not for sophisticated gaming sequences or automation workflows.

The keyboard comes with a warm-tone walnut wooden case and MOA profile PBT dye-sub keycaps. In addition, Akko MU01 offers a wood wax to help the wooden case stay healthy for longer.
- WIRELESS & MULTI-DEVICE – Akko MU01 walnut wooden gaming keyboard is capable of switching between 2.4Ghz, BT 5.0 and USB-C wired connection mode for multi-device users. It is aimed for maintaining consistent and stable connectivity with a large 4000mAh battery.
- PBT DYE-SUB KEYS & HOT-SWAPPABLE – Dye-Sub PBT keycaps are extremely sturdy and resistant to wear even for decades, and the legends wouldn’t fade away or get oily easily compared to conventional ABS keycaps. Hot-swappable keyboards allow users to easily change mechanical switches in case one key is malfunctional.
- PROGRAMMABLE & RGB BACKLIT – All keys definitions, RGB profiles (per-key supported) and animation effects can be re-mapped and customized by Akko Cloud Driver. The keyboard also has over 12 pre-defined media hotkeys (such as volume control, calculator and mute) to improve efficiency.
- MAC & WIN – Akko MU01 Mountain Seclusion PC keyboard supports both Windows and Mac systems with an easy switch by the switch located under the CAPS key.
Office, coding and gaming suitability
Office and productivity
The numpad, function row and wireless modes are strong advantages for spreadsheets and data entry. Silent Red switches can reduce noise, but they do not make the keyboard membrane-quiet. Tall ASA caps and the tight navigation cluster are the main ergonomic variables.
Coding
The compact footprint leaves more mouse space while preserving navigation and function keys. If you frequently use Home, End, Insert or dedicated arrow navigation, verify the exact 1800 arrangement first.
Gaming
Casual and mainstream PC gaming suits the 3098N well, especially if you want a numpad and wireless convenience. Competitive players seeking adjustable actuation, rapid trigger, analog input or very high polling rates should look elsewhere. Akko’s 5075 V5 TMR offers those magnetic-switch features, but it is a different 75% product with a different feel.
Akko 3098N versus newer alternatives
| Model | Best reason to choose it | Main compromise | Observed official price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3098N | 98-key layout, tri-mode wireless, ASA/PBT caps and hot-swap | Legacy Wireless Manager software; no VIA/QMK | $129.99 Black&Gold, Aug. 18, 2026 |
| 3098S | Similar compact full-size concept, potentially lower price | Connectivity and switch bundle vary by SKU | $94.99 example listing; verify current stock |
| 5075B VIA | VIA, tri-mode connectivity, knob and hot-swap | 75% kit with no numpad; switches and keycaps may be extra | $59.99 listed; stock varies |
| 5075 V5 TMR | Adjustable actuation, rapid trigger and dual 8KHz polling | 75% layout and a specialized magnetic-switch ecosystem | $109.99–$119.99 |
A modern 96% or 98% VIA/QMK board is also worth considering if remapping and long-term software support matter more than Akko’s included ASA set. Compare bottom-row dimensions, stabilizers, LED orientation, battery and warranty before assuming keycap compatibility.
Who should buy the 3098N?
- Buy it when you need a numpad but want a narrower desk footprint.
- Choose it when Bluetooth, 2.4GHz and USB-C are all useful.
- Choose it when you want a ready-to-use board with PBT caps and switch replacement options.
- Wait for a discount if VIA/QMK is not essential but $129.99 competes with newer designs.
- Skip it if you require advanced remapping, polished macOS/Linux configuration, rapid trigger or guaranteed membrane-level quiet.
Verdict
The Akko 3098N is still a competent wireless 1800 keyboard, and its combination of numpad, compact footprint, PBT keycaps and hot-swap sockets remains uncommon. Its value depends heavily on the exact switch and sale price. At or below the mid-$90 range, it becomes a sensible buy for layout-focused users; at the observed $129.99 official price, newer VIA-equipped or gaming-focused boards offer more modern software and features. Confirm the SKU, install only Wireless Manager 1.0, and buy the 3098N for its layout and connectivity—not for cutting-edge programmability.
