Alan Ritchson has been reported as Jason Momoa’s replacement in Sony’s live-action Helldivers movie, but the available coverage does not establish that Sony or PlayStation has officially confirmed the casting. TheWrap first reported Ritchson was in talks to play a Helldiver; later coverage described him as Momoa’s replacement.
Which video game movie is Ritchson reportedly joining?
It is Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions’ live-action adaptation of Helldivers, directed by Justin Lin. The film draws on Arrowhead Game Studios’ satirical science-fiction shooter franchise, whose soldiers fight alien threats in the name of Super Earth. The game’s premise does not confirm the movie’s plot or which specific character Ritchson would play.
Helldivers 2 launched on February 8, 2024. Metacritic lists Arrowhead Game Studios as developer, Sony Interactive Entertainment as publisher, and PlayStation 5 among its platforms. TheWrap reported that more than 12 million units had sold across PlayStation 5 and PC in the game’s first four months after launch; that is an early-sales figure, not a current lifetime total.
What is confirmed about the casting change?
The reports describe a change in status, not a documented studio announcement. TheWrap reported Ritchson was “in talks” to play one of the Helldivers on September 18, 2026. On October 1, GamesRadar described him as having replaced Momoa. The reviewed coverage does not include a direct Sony or PlayStation casting announcement, so “officially replaces” overstates what those reports establish.

The project is based on a franchise known for satirical sci-fi combat and its Super Earth setting. The casting reports identify Ritchson as being in talks for one of the Helldivers, but they do not name a character or provide film-specific plot details. The reported replacement should therefore not be read as confirmation that the movie will adapt a particular game mission or feature a specific game character.
