The exact path depends on the AWCC version: AWCC 6.x uses AlienFX or Lighting, while AWCC 5.x uses FX and Themes. Choose the instructions that match the labels in your app; supported colors, effects, and zones vary by device.
Before you change the lighting
- Identify the exact Alienware model and the device you want to control: the computer, display, keyboard, mouse, or another accessory.
- Open AWCC from the Windows Start menu. If it is not installed, use Dell’s support page for your computer or accessory model to find the compatible package and drivers.
- Use the labels in your installed app to identify its generation. AWCC 6.x has a redesigned interface with AlienFX and Lighting controls; AWCC 5.x uses the older FX and Themes interface. Dell’s AWCC 6.x guide lists version 6.13.8.0 as of August 18, 2026. Dell also documents AWCC 5.x, so do not assume every model should be upgraded to 6.x.
Change lighting in AWCC 6.x
- Open Alienware Command Center from Start.
- Open AlienFX or Lighting.
- Select the detected computer or peripheral. To coordinate several devices, select the relevant devices or use the available multi-device selection; the controls depend on the hardware.
- Select the lighting zone or zones you want to change. Depending on the model, these may include keyboard areas, a logo, chassis lighting, a power button, a touchpad, or accessory zones.
- Choose an effect and color or palette. If available for that device and effect, adjust brightness, tempo, duration, and direction. A static color is a useful first setting when checking whether the controls work.
- Save or apply the preset using the controls shown in your AWCC version.
Dell’s AWCC 6.x lighting guide describes the available lighting controls; the choices shown depend on the selected device. For multiple-device controls, see Dell’s AlienFX guide.
Change lighting in AWCC 5.x
- Open AWCC and select FX.
- Select an existing system theme or create one.
- Select the zones on the device image.
- Open Lighting, choose an effect and color, and enter RGB values if your device offers that option.
- Adjust brightness and save the theme.
These steps follow the older AWCC 5.x interface. Dell’s AWCC 5.x guide and AWCC 5.x PDF instructions cover that generation. If your screen says FX and Themes, use this workflow rather than looking for the 6.x labels.
Set lighting for a particular game
On compatible AWCC 6.x systems, a game’s AlienFX profile can use lighting different from the system preset. Dell’s AWCC automated experience guide describes game-specific lighting and adding games that are not detected automatically.

- Open Game Library and select the game.
- Select AlienFX, then select Add (+).
- Create the lighting configuration and save or apply it.
If lighting changes when you launch a game, inspect that game’s AlienFX profile and edit or remove it if needed. You can also set the system lighting you want and, where the option exists in your AWCC version, change automated lighting behavior. If a game was added manually, check that its profile is associated with the executable you actually launch. Automatic changes are not available on every Alienware computer.
Turn lighting off, dim it, or restore it
AWCC 6.x includes Go Dark, Go Dim, and Go Light options. Use Go Dark to turn supported lighting off, Go Dim to reduce it, or Go Light to restore lighting. These controls are useful when a device appears dark without requiring you to rebuild its preset. Availability can depend on the AWCC version and device. See Dell’s Go Light, Go Dark, and Go Dim instructions.

Change keyboard or mouse lighting
- Connect the Alienware keyboard or mouse, using its supported connection or receiver.
- Open AWCC and select FX or AlienFX, depending on the version.
- Select the peripheral, open its lighting controls, choose an effect and color, adjust brightness if available, and save the configuration.
Some Alienware peripherals need both AWCC and an Alienware Gaming Peripheral driver for configuration features. Dell’s keyboard and mouse setup guide explains the software requirements. As one model-specific example, Dell’s AW410K guide directs owners to AWCC’s FX and Lighting controls; that path is not universal to every accessory.

AWCC does not show the device or lighting section
A missing control does not by itself mean the hardware is defective. The model may not support adjustable lighting, AWCC may be the wrong generation, a required driver may be absent, or the device may not be recognized.

- Restart Windows and reconnect the peripheral.
- Check the exact model’s Dell support page for a compatible AWCC package and any required device driver or firmware.
- After installing or opening AWCC, allow time for its components to finish installing and for its service to start. Dell notes that the app may initially show no AlienFX devices detected after a restart while this happens.
- Use AWCC’s repair option if it is available.
- If the device remains missing, uninstall and reinstall AWCC using Dell’s instructions for your model. Contact Dell support if the compatible software still does not detect it.
Dell’s peripheral setup guide covers AWCC and peripheral-driver installation. Dell recommends updating Windows and computer drivers before installing AWCC.
The lights are completely dark
- Check whether Go Dark is active, where available.
- Check that brightness is not at zero and the selected effect is not effectively off.
- Confirm that you selected the intended device and zone.
- Check whether a game-specific profile is replacing the system preset.
- Confirm that AWCC detects the device; if not, follow the recovery steps above.
Only some zones respond
Zone and effect support varies by model. Consult the device view in AWCC and the documentation for your exact computer or accessory to confirm which zones are configurable; a missing zone may be a hardware limitation rather than a software fault. Dell’s lighting guide notes that configurations depend on the selected device.

The lighting works before Windows starts but not after
This is a clue that the hardware can light up, but it does not identify a single cause. AWCC, its service, firmware, or drivers may not be applying the Windows lighting profile. Repair or reinstall the model-specific AWCC package and check the relevant drivers before treating it as a hardware failure.

Why the menus and available options differ
- AWCC generation: AWCC 5.x uses FX and Themes; AWCC 6.x uses a redesigned interface with AlienFX and Lighting controls.
- Device type: A built-in keyboard, desktop chassis, display, external keyboard, and mouse do not necessarily expose the same zones.
- Model capability: Some devices have fixed lighting, fewer zones, or no user-adjustable lighting. RGB control is not universal across Alienware products.
- Effect support: Brightness, direction, tempo, and duration are not available for every device or lighting effect.
- Accessory software: A computer’s AWCC support does not guarantee that every third-party RGB component will appear in AlienFX; some Alienware peripherals also need their own driver.
