Baldur’s Gate 3 has eight full companion romance options: Shadowheart, Astarion, Wyll, Gale, Lae’zel, Karlach, Halsin, and Minthara. Jaheira and Minsc can join your party, but they are not included among the full romance routes in the current guide. Short encounters with other characters are separate from a sustained companion romance.
Romances develop through dialogue, approval, and choices in companion stories. Some relationships can overlap; others favor exclusivity, and an early decision can close off an option. This guide is a spoiler-light roster, not a step-by-step walkthrough.
How romance works in Baldur’s Gate 3
Larian describes relationships as developing through deliberation, choice, and consequences. You can pursue a relationship, change your mind, or back out. Under the game’s stated rules, a player-controlled Origin can romance an NPC Origin; NPC Origins do not romance one another, and player-controlled Origins cannot romance other player-controlled Origins in co-op. Larian’s Community Update #22 describes the system as designed around romance with NPCs.
For companion romances, approval and conversation choices matter, as does progressing the companion’s personal story. The specifics differ by character; there is no single approval threshold or universal sequence that starts every route. Romance routes are not gender-locked, according to the guide.

These are orientation notes, not guaranteed trigger instructions. Exact dialogue flags, scene timing, and possible lockouts vary by route; use a spoiler-aware walkthrough for the companion you choose if you need precise steps.
Can you romance more than one companion?
Sometimes, but it depends on the characters and the choices involved. Some companions accept overlapping relationships, while others prefer exclusivity. If a companion objects, they may raise the issue and let you clarify what you want; that does not mean every pairing is compatible or that an early flirtation carries no risk.

One concrete early conflict is Lae’zel: pursuing her can prevent you from starting a Shadowheart romance. If you want to preserve both possibilities, avoid treating early romantic choices as consequence-free and pay attention when a companion discusses the relationship.
Full companion romances versus one-time encounters
Optional encounters are not the same as full companion arcs. The guide covers encounters involving the Drow twins, Naoise Nallinto, Mizora, the Guardian, and Haarlep. These do not constitute sustained companion romances, and some can affect an existing relationship. Check your chosen companion’s route before accepting an optional encounter if you want to avoid an unwanted consequence.

Companions without full romance routes
Jaheira and Minsc can be companions, but the guide’s roster does not list them as full romance options. This distinction is useful when searching for a complete romance list: being recruitable or part of the party does not necessarily mean a character has a sustained romance route.

- Start with the character and story. Each full route is tied to that companion’s reactions and personal quest.
- Consider relationship style. If you want to pursue more than one partner, remember that openness varies by character and pair.
- Be deliberate early. The Lae’zel–Shadowheart conflict shows that choices can rule out an option before a route is well underway.
- Choose your spoiler level. For exact dialogue and quest milestones, consult a route-specific guide rather than assuming the same triggers apply to everyone.
Patch 8 and current romance content
Larian called Patch 8 the game’s “final major patch” and said it added new ways to kiss a romanced companion. Its announcement lists PC, Mac, Xbox, and PlayStation 5 as supported platforms.
