The newest main-series game, DOOM: The Dark Ages, arrived on May 15, 2025—but its story takes place before DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal. The list below uses original release order and separates standalone games from expansions, VR releases and later re-releases so those categories are not mistaken for new mainline entries.
Standalone Doom games in release order
This chronology covers the franchise’s major standalone releases. Bethesda’s official franchise collection, updated in September 2026, highlights several core entries, but it is not a complete inventory of historical mobile spin-offs. Exact original launch dates are included only where established by the cited publisher sources; the entries with year-only dates should not be read as having verified day-and-month launch dates.

- DOOM — December 10, 1993. Bethesda identifies this as the original game’s release date in its 2015 anniversary article.
- DOOM VFR — 2017. A distinct virtual-reality release for HTC Vive and PlayStation VR, listed in Bethesda’s anniversary timeline. The cited source establishes the year, not an exact original launch date.
- DOOM: The Dark Ages — May 15, 2025. Bethesda’s launch checklist gives this date and lists Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, Steam and PlayStation 5. Although it is the latest entry here by release date, Bethesda describes it as a prequel to DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal.
This is a selective major-release chronology, not a claim that those three entries are the franchise’s only games. Historical spin-offs exist, but the sources cited here do not establish their original launch dates well enough to place them in a complete, date-verified list.
Expansions, VR and re-releases: what counts separately?
The Ancient Gods
The Ancient Gods is a two-part downloadable campaign expansion for DOOM Eternal, not an independent mainline game. Bethesda’s series timeline classifies it as add-on content.

DOOM + DOOM II
The modern DOOM + DOOM II package combines earlier games; it does not replace their original release dates. Bethesda describes it as a definitive combined release made with id Software, Nightdive Studios and MachineGames on its official game page. Treat it as a later edition, not a new first-release entry in the series chronology.
Ports, enhanced editions and collections
Ports, remasters, enhanced editions and bundles can bring an older DOOM game to a new platform or package several games together. Unless the question is specifically about editions or platform launches, they belong outside an original-release chronology. Bethesda’s September 2026 DOOM Anthology announcement lists DOOM + DOOM II, DOOM 64, DOOM 3, DOOM (2016), DOOM Eternal Deluxe Edition and DOOM: The Dark Ages Premium Edition; the collection is evidence of what the anthology includes, not of those games’ first-release dates.

Release order versus story order
For release order, place DOOM: The Dark Ages after DOOM Eternal: it was released in 2025. For narrative chronology, Bethesda’s official franchise page identifies The Dark Ages as a prequel to DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal. That makes the two ordering questions different. The cited sources do not establish a required play order for earlier games, so this guide does not claim that a particular older entry is necessary to understand the modern games.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to read an “all Doom games” list
- Standalone releases: the main category for a release chronology; include spin-offs only when their original dates and scope are established.
- Expansions: campaign add-ons such as The Ancient Gods are content for a parent game, not separate mainline releases.
- VR games: DOOM VFR is a distinct game release, even though it is a special-platform spin-off.
- Re-releases and bundles: products such as DOOM + DOOM II and the DOOM Anthology package older games; their release dates do not become the original dates of the games inside.
For a broader list that explains its inclusion rule, see Digital Trends’ Doom games in order guide; its scope excludes remakes, DLC and enhanced editions. That editorial boundary is useful, but it does not resolve every historical spin-off date.
