Spoiler warning: This guide reveals the final choice, both endings, and their consequences.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has two documented endings. The route is decided in the final Lumière sequence, immediately after defeating Renoir, when you choose whether to fight as Maelle or Verso. Earlier dialogue choices do not determine the ending.

How many endings are there?
There are two ending routes. You reach the decision at the end of Act 3, after the Renoir encounter and just before the final duel. Select one character, then defeat the other in combat to complete that route.
What choice determines the ending?
- Progress through the final Lumière sequence and defeat Renoir.
- At the confrontation that follows, choose Fight as Maelle or Fight as Verso.
- Win the duel against the character you did not select.
- Continue through the ending sequence and credits.
The game does not use earlier conversation decisions to calculate this outcome. The immediate character choice before the duel is the deciding trigger.

A Life to Paint: choose Maelle
Select Fight as Maelle, defeat Verso, and you receive A Life to Paint. This route keeps the Canvas in existence and points toward rebuilding Lumière, preserving the world and its painted inhabitants.
A Life to Love: choose Verso
Select Fight as Verso, defeat Maelle, and you receive A Life to Love. This route destroys the Canvas and brings Alicia back to the real world, accepting the loss of the painted world.

How do you get both endings without replaying the campaign?
Make a manual save before the final character choice. That pre-choice save is the practical point from which to view both routes.
- Before selecting Maelle or Verso, create a separate save slot.
- Choose either character and finish the duel and ending.
- Return to the main menu after the ending.
- Load the pre-choice save.
- Select the other character and complete the alternate duel.
This lets you see both endings without replaying the campaign from the beginning. Keep the original save untouched until both routes are complete.

Should you fight as Maelle or Verso?
There is no mechanical “best” choice. The routes prioritize different values:

This is a story interpretation, not an unlocking requirement. Either choice is valid, and both routes are intentionally painful rather than a simple good-versus-evil split.

Is there a true or canon ending?
No officially designated true ending has been established. Lead writer Jennifer Svedberg-Yen said in an interview reported by GamesRadar+:
“I tell everyone there is no correct ending, there is no canon ending, there is no official Sandfall ending. Both endings are there for a reason, we put them both there for a reason. They were designed in a very particular way. Neither is perfect. Both are heartbreaking in their own ways.”

Accordingly, A Life to Paint and A Life to Love should be treated as two intended conclusions, not as a normal ending and a hidden definitive one.
What happens after the ending?
After the ending and credits, the game allows you to return to exploration. If you want to view the alternate conclusion, use the pre-choice save rather than relying on a post-ending state.
