In The Outlast Trials, “defeating” most enemies means slipping past them, breaking their pursuit, or surviving long enough to finish the objective—not killing them. The Season 7.1 guide covers 14 enemies, but the list has a notable gap: the Biter, introduced in Season 7, is not included, and the sources available here do not establish how to counter it.
How to read enemy threats
Most counterplay comes down to recognizing how an enemy detects or attacks you: sight, sound, hiding-place checks, ranged attacks, or deception. The tactics below are recommendations from Destructoid’s Season 7.1 guide, not developer guarantees or firsthand testing. Use them as survival guidance, and adapt if a particular encounter behaves differently.
Enemies and how to survive them
Grunt
Grunts are standard melee threats. Use darkness and cover to break line of sight. If one is close, stay still: moving may give away your position.
Big Grunt
Big Grunts deal more damage and withstand more punishment than standard Grunts. Keep your distance and use cover rather than trying to confront one.

#1 Best Overall
Pouncer
Pouncers attack from hiding places. Listen for nearby noises, avoid hiding spots when one is close, and use the escape input if she grabs you.
Berserker
Berserkers cannot see, but they are highly sensitive to noise. Move quietly, avoid unnecessary movement, and do not sprint near one.
Screamer
A Screamer is dormant until awakened by too much noise. Crouch to reduce noise; throwables can distract him if you need to redirect his attention.
Night Hunter
Unlike enemies that rely on ordinary vision, the Night Hunter can see in darkness. Avoid dark areas and use light; the guide says brightness limits its vision.
Pusher
A Pusher’s grab releases neurotoxin that causes psychosis. Avoid standing in his path. If he gets too close, use a throwable or your stun rig to interrupt him.
Pitcher
Pitchers throw Molotovs from range, leaving burning areas behind. Break line of sight before he can throw, and stay clear of the fire.

Jaeger
Jaegers detect players through hiding places and can see through walls. The guide recommends creating distance and continuing to move; hiding is not a reliable option against them.
Imposter
Imposters disguise themselves as Reagents and attack at close range. Keep track of your allies and communicate frequently so a suspicious look-alike is less likely to catch the team off guard. Red Barrels’ Season 7.1 notes also discuss changes to Invasion and Imposter balancing, so fine details may change with updates: official Season 7.1 update notes.

Coyle’s powerful melee attacks and grab can inflict shock damage. Keep your distance, avoid him where possible, and use darkness to hide.
Mother Gooseberry
Mother Gooseberry is an aggressive pursuer with powerful melee attacks, including around narrow corners. Keep moving to maintain distance instead of letting her close in.
Franco Barbi
Franco’s shotgun makes him dangerous at range. Use cover and avoid exposing yourself to his shots.
Scapegoat
Scapegoat carries explosives that can cause substantial damage when they detonate. Destructoid’s guide says to use the tracker and “microf trigger” to complete the objective, then stay clear of the final explosion. The guide’s wording is unusual, and the available sources do not clarify what “microf trigger” means, so do not rely on that phrase as a confirmed mechanic.
What about the Biter?
The 14-enemy list is not exhaustive. Red Barrels introduced the Biter with the Season 7 Project Boneyard update and said it appears in Prison Farm and the two new MK-Challenges: official Project Boneyard announcement. The current guide’s visible roster omits the Biter, and the official announcement does not give counterplay. Its specific detection, attack, and avoidance mechanics therefore cannot be stated reliably here.
Season 7.1 context
Red Barrels announced Season 7.1 for September 8, 2026, alongside two MK-Challenges and the limited-time Chemical Leak event. The studio also said mod support ended with Season 7.1 and that several quality-of-life settings previously available through mods were added to the game’s settings. See the Season 7.1 announcement for the update details.
