It comes last here because its familiar open-world formula, story and pacing make a less compelling whole than the strongest entries. Far Cry 3 takes the top spot for its memorable setting, characters and focused sense of discovery.
This ranking covers the six mainline games and six major standalone spin-offs, including the original Far Cry and Far Cry Instincts. It does not attempt to rank every port, regional adaptation or arcade experience. The order is editorial, not an objective scorecard: I weigh gameplay identity, setting, story and characters, pacing, variety, and what each game was trying to do for its release context.

How many Far Cry games are there?
There is no single count unless you define what belongs in the series. GamesRadar’s overview counts six mainline entries and six major spin-offs, while treating ports and arcade experiences separately. This list uses that broader, practical scope; it is not an exhaustive ranking of every platform-specific version.
Ubisoft describes the franchise as a series built around exotic settings, action-focused stories, first-person shooter mechanics and charismatic villains. Far Cry began in 2004, and Ubisoft’s 2025 press kit says the franchise had reached 100 million unique players as of October 2024. That is a dated milestone, not a current player count.

Most entries can be played on their own. Far Cry: New Dawn is the notable exception: it directly follows Far Cry 5, so playing that game first gives New Dawn’s world and story more context.
All Far Cry games ranked worst to best
The ranking below compares the games as experiences in their own right, while accounting for the differences between mainline releases and spin-offs. The order is not meant to represent critical consensus. For comparison, Insider Gaming’s 2026 ranking also puts Far Cry 6 last and Far Cry 3 first among its eight games, but explicitly combines Metacritic positions with the author’s judgment; other published lists differ.
12. Far Cry 6
Far Cry 6 is the weakest major entry in this ranking because its scale and familiar systems do not add up to a particularly memorable adventure. Its open world gives you plenty to do, but the established Far Cry loop—explore, capture territory, take on activities and fight through enemy positions—feels overextended rather than newly invigorated.
Yara’s political conflict and its charismatic dictator, Antón Castillo, offer a clear premise, but the story and cast do not make the journey as compelling as the series’ best work. It is still recognizably Far Cry; the problem is that recognition becomes repetition. Insider Gaming also placed it last in its 2026 list, though that is one outlet’s judgment, not proof that every critic or player agrees.
11. Far Cry 5
Far Cry 5 has a strong sense of place in its rural Montana setting and an unusual antagonistic group in the Seed family. Its resistance-driven structure can make the campaign feel like a series of interruptions, though: progress is tied to raising regional resistance, and story encounters can arrive before you feel ready for them.
The game’s open-ended approach to liberating Hope County gives exploration room to breathe, but mission variety and narrative momentum are uneven. Insider Gaming’s 2026 ranking criticizes its predictability and bugs; those are that outlet’s assessments, not a claim that every version or player experience is the same.
10. Far Cry: Primal
Primal makes the clearest break from the series’ modern-shooter identity. Set in a prehistoric world, it replaces guns with bows, clubs, spears and animal companions, making survival and close-range combat central to the experience. Its setting is a meaningful gameplay choice rather than just scenery.

- Spider-Men, Peter Parker and Miles Morales, return for an exciting new adventure in the critically acclaimed Marvel’s Spider-Man franchise. Swing, jump, and utilize the new Web Wings to travel across Marvel’s New York, quickly switching between Peter Parker and Miles Morales to experience different stories and epic new powers, as the iconic villain Venom threatens to destroy their lives, their city, and the ones they love.
- An evolution of the Spider-Man story: The incredible power of the symbiote forces Peter and Miles to face the ultimate test of strength, both inside and outside the mask, as they balance their lives, friendships, and their duty to protect those in need.
- Experience two playable Spider-Men: Quickly swap between both Spider-Men as you explore an expanded Marvel’s New York. Experience Peter’s new symbiote abilities and Miles’ explosive bio-electric venom powers, and discover upgradeable, high-tech equipment that enhances the combat experience for extensive gameplay depth and variety.
- Battle iconic Marvel Super Villains: Fight against a variety of new and iconic villains, including an original take on the monstrous Venom, the ruthless Kraven the Hunter, the volatile Lizard, and many more!
That change is also its limitation. The world and taming mechanics are distinctive, but the rhythm of gathering resources, fighting rival groups and expanding your village can become repetitive. It ranks above the more formula-bound entries because it takes a genuine risk, even if that risk does not sustain its novelty throughout.

9. Far Cry 2
Far Cry 2 is the series’ most demanding mainline entry in this group. Its African setting, weapon degradation, malaria and sparse guidance create a harsher, less convenient form of open-world survival than later games. Those systems give the conflict a distinctive texture and make preparation matter.
The same design can make missions and travel feel punishing or repetitive, and the story is more atmospheric than character-driven. Far Cry 2 is an important alternative to the later power-fantasy formula, but its friction will be a drawback for players who want the more fluid exploration and progression of subsequent games.
8. Far Cry Instincts
Far Cry Instincts is a console-focused branch of the original game rather than a straightforward port of its PC version. Its more constrained console design and “feral” abilities reshape the experience around a different balance of stealth, combat and action.
It is worth including when “all Far Cry games” means major branches as well as numbered releases. It sits below the mainline standouts because its platform-specific scope and age make it a less complete recommendation today, not because it should be judged as though it were a modern open-world sequel.

7. Far Cry Instincts: Evolution
Evolution continues the Instincts branch with another campaign and the series’ heightened feral abilities. It builds on the console-specific action identity, offering a more direct and compact experience than the later expansive entries.
That focus is a virtue if you want a short, old-school Far Cry variation. It also limits the game’s range: it does not have the world scale, mission breadth or character depth that define the franchise at its strongest.

6. Far Cry: New Dawn
New Dawn is a direct sequel to Far Cry 5, returning to Hope County years after the events of that game. Its post-apocalyptic setting brings a more colorful look and a light RPG layer, including enemy tiers and weapon progression. That gives it a recognizable identity within the series rather than making it simply another numbered sequel.
Its compact scale and repeated expeditions can feel thin compared with a full mainline release, and the progression mechanics do not suit every player. New Dawn works best for someone who wants more of Far Cry 5’s world and is comfortable with a shorter follow-up.

Blood Dragon is a standalone spin-off that swaps the series’ naturalistic settings for an exaggerated neon-future action fantasy. Its compact structure and unapologetically heightened tone make it one of Far Cry’s most distinctive experiments.
Its appeal depends heavily on enjoying that particular style of humor and retro science-fiction pastiche. It does less with exploration and story than the major mainline games, but it earns its place by transforming the formula instead of merely shrinking it.
4. Far Cry
The original Far Cry established the franchise’s island setting, first-person combat and open-ended approach to encounters. Its tropical environments and emphasis on moving through hostile territory laid the groundwork for ideas the series would revisit for years.
It ranks below the later entries because its age shows in pacing and design, and because later games developed its open-world structure into more cohesive, character-led adventures. As a foundation for the franchise, it remains significant; as a starting point for most players now, it is less inviting than the best modern entries.

3. Far Cry 4
Far Cry 4 refines the structure that made Far Cry 3 a breakthrough: a dense map, hostile outposts, varied approaches to combat and a central antagonist who dominates the story. Kyrat’s Himalayan landscape gives the exploration a strong visual identity, with vertical terrain that changes how you move and fight.

Its greatest strength is how well it balances familiar systems with a setting that feels distinct. The formula is more polished than surprising, and some activities repeat, but the result is a highly accomplished open-world shooter.
2. Far Cry 5
Far Cry 5’s setting and open-ended campaign are among the series’ strongest, but its structural drawbacks keep it from the top tier in this ranking. In a list that includes both standalone spin-offs and mainline games, it is a divisive entry: the freedom to explore Hope County is compelling, while the resistance meter and forced story progression can undercut that freedom.
Its placement here reflects the weight given to pacing and narrative control. Players who value a familiar, action-heavy sandbox over a tightly directed campaign may rank it higher.
1. Far Cry 3
Far Cry 3 is the strongest overall package in this ranking. Its island setting supports exploration and combat, its progression gives a clear sense of growing capability, and its cast makes the central conflict more memorable than in most entries. The open world feels like a place to learn and adapt, not just a checklist of locations to clear.
Its age and familiar series conventions are visible, but the combination of atmosphere, character and pacing remains unusually effective. Insider Gaming likewise ranked it first among the eight games in its 2026 comparison, praising its world, writing and characters; that agreement is a useful point of comparison, not a universal verdict.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose a Far Cry game to play first
- For the strongest all-round introduction: choose Far Cry 3 for its setting, characters and core open-world loop.
- For a more polished take on the same formula: choose Far Cry 4, especially if a striking mountainous setting appeals.
- For a setting and combat systems that feel different: try Far Cry 2 for survival friction or Primal for prehistoric close-range combat.
- If you want to follow a story across two games: play Far Cry 5 before New Dawn.
- If you want a shorter, stylistically unusual spin-off: Blood Dragon offers a very different tone from the mainline games.
