To unlock outfits in Mario Kart World, eat Dash Food while playing as the character whose outfit you want. Each serving may unlock a costume, but it is a chance—not a guaranteed reward. Use Free Roam to find regional food, then check the map to see which outfits each character still needs.
How to unlock outfits
- Enter Free Roam. Explore regions and look for food sources, including Yoshi’s restaurants, which sell regional Dash Food. Nintendo recommends Free Roam for finding different foods. Nintendo’s tips for Mario Kart World also explain that the map can help you track outfits and travel to characters or locations.
- Choose the character whose outfit you want. Eat the Dash Food while using that character. The food gives a short burst of speed and may unlock an outfit for the racer you are playing as; a single serving is not a sure unlock. Nintendo’s game page describes the food and its possible outfit effect.
- Check the map for progress. Review that character’s collected and missing outfits, then use the map to plan another food stop if needed.
Why an outfit may not unlock
- The reward is a chance. Dash Food does not guarantee a costume every time you eat it.
- You may be using the wrong character. The possible outfit is for the character you are racing as, so switch to the character whose wardrobe you want before eating.
- Some characters have no extra outfits. Nintendo notes that not every character has additional outfits. If the map shows no missing outfits for a character, there may be nothing else to unlock for them.
Using food stops efficiently
At a food source, try the available Dash Food with one character, then switch characters and try it again for any racers whose outfits may be associated with that food. This is a useful way to cover more possibilities during a stop, not a guarantee that the food unlocks something for every character. Foods reported as unlocking outfits for multiple characters include burgers, takoyaki, pizza, cake, pancakes, popcorn, fruit, and meat.
Outfit count and example unlocks
Nintendo Life’s 2026 guide counts 127 costumes, including default outfits; that is the guide’s count, not a total published by Nintendo. The guide breaks down outfits and food associations by character, but says its food list is not fully comprehensive. Treat these pairings as examples rather than a complete or guaranteed map of unlocks.
| Character | Outfit | Reported food and location |
|---|---|---|
| Mario | Touring | Burger at Mario Bros. Circuit; milk or yoghurt at Moo Moo Meadows |
| Mario | Mechanic | Apple juice at Toad’s Factory |
| Mario | Dune Rider | Pokey Curry at Choco Mountain |
| Mario | Happi | Takoyaki or taiyaki around Cheep Cheep Falls; sushi around Cheep Cheep Falls or Koopa Troopa Beach |
| Luigi | Oasis | Naan bread at Shy Guy Bazaar or Desert Hills |
| Yoshi | Aristocrat | Popcorn at Boo Cinema |
| Peach | Yukata | Takoyaki, taiyaki, or sushi around Cheep Cheep Falls and Koopa Troopa Beach |
These examples come from Nintendo Life’s costume guide. Several foods can be associated with an outfit, and the guide cautions that its list is not exhaustive; use the in-game map to identify what remains for your character.
