Bannerlord has two separate cheat systems: a developer console for typed campaign commands, and cheat-mode menus and battle hotkeys for immediate actions. Enable cheat mode first, save your campaign, then use the in-game help argument to confirm syntax because commands and key bindings can vary by game build and keyboard layout.
How do I enable cheats in Bannerlord?
Setup instructions below come from community and editorial guides rather than an official TaleWorlds manual, so the file path or shortcut may differ after an update.
- Close the game.
- Open the Bannerlord Documents folder and locate
engine_config.txt. PC Gamer’s guide identifies the setting ascheat_mode = 0. - Change it to
cheat_mode = 1, save the file, and launch Bannerlord. - If you prefer the console route, the Nexus Mods community guide lists
config.cheat_mode 1to enable cheats andconfig.cheat_mode 0to disable them.
Keep a backup save before changing the setting. Cheat mode can expose commands and menus that alter your campaign, and configuration edits may be overwritten by updates.

PC Gamer reports that Alt plus the backtick key (the key above Tab, usually shared with tilde) opens and closes the developer console. The Nexus Mods guide gives the shortcut as Alt+~. On a non-US layout, use the key mapped to backtick/tilde rather than relying on the printed character. If neither combination works, verify that cheat mode is enabled and try the equivalent key on your layout.
Type help with a command as an argument to display the format expected by the running game. This is safer than assuming a parameter spelling from an online list.

Console commands versus menu and battle cheats

These interfaces overlap in purpose but are not interchangeable: a console command does not need an inventory menu, and a battle shortcut is not a typed console command.
Bannerlord console commands for gold, troops and items
A community-maintained BUTR/Bannerlord.GABS reference reports 133 commands in 17 groups, plus seven dedicated-server-only commands. It says campaign commands require cheats enabled. The exact game build used to generate that list is not stated, so confirm each command with in-game help.

Money and inventory
campaign.add_denars— adds gold to the player.campaign.add_item [ItemName] | [Amount]— adds the specified item and quantity.
Troops and prisoners
campaign.add_troops [TroopName] | [Number]— adds troops to the player party.campaign.add_prisoners— adds prisoners.
Skills and character progression
campaign.add_skill_xp_to_hero [HeroName] | [SkillName] | [Amount]— adds skill experience to a hero.
Names containing spaces, capitalization, separators and optional arguments are version-sensitive. Enter the command name with help first and copy the format shown by your installation.

Movement, quests, diplomacy and other campaign commands
Save before using the following commands. They can permanently change relationships, settlements, quests, wars, heroes or campaign progression; keep a separate backup if you are experimenting.
Travel
campaign.move_main_party [SettlementName]— moves the player party to a settlement.
Quests
campaign.complete_active_quest [QuestName]— completes an active quest.
Faction relations and wars
campaign.declare_war [Faction1Name] | [Faction2Name]— declares war between two factions.campaign.make_peace [Faction1Name] | [Faction2Name]— makes peace between two factions.
Battle-state command
mission.toggleDisableDying— the reference describes this as toggling invincibility for the player agent.
The command reference also groups commands for settlement ownership, heroes, campaign time and other systems. Use the running game’s help output to inspect those groups instead of relying on an unfiltered copied list.

Inventory and party-screen cheats
With cheat mode enabled, PC Gamer reports that the inventory screen exposes additional items that can be added directly, while the party screen exposes troops to add. These are menu actions, not console commands, and are useful when you do not want to remember an item or troop identifier. The exact entries can change with game updates.

If a shortcut does nothing, check that cheat mode is still active, that the game window has focus, and that your keyboard layout has not remapped the function keys. A major update may also change or remove a binding.

The console will not open
- Confirm
cheat_mode = 1inengine_config.txt, then restart the game. - Try both Alt+backtick and Alt+tilde, using the physical key above Tab.
- Check for a keyboard-layout or overlay conflict.
The command is rejected
- Type the command name exactly as shown, including the
campaign.ormission.prefix. - Run the command with
helpto see the argument format for your build. - Check that campaign cheats are enabled and that you are in the correct game context; mission commands may require an active battle.
A command works differently after an update
Command names, configuration paths and shortcuts are volatile. Treat online lists as references, not guarantees, and use the live game’s help output. The PC Gamer guide explicitly notes that it did not test every command in its list.

Safe way to experiment
- Make a manual backup save before enabling a consequential command.
- Enable cheat mode and open the console.
- Use
helpto verify the exact syntax. - Test one command at a time and observe the result.
- Reload the backup if a quest, relationship, settlement or battle state becomes unusable.
- Disable cheats afterward with
config.cheat_mode 0if you want to return to an unmodified campaign.
