To teach one to your pawn, obtain its specialization tome and use it; you can also hire a pawn that already has the specialization from a rift listing. Tome routes are tied to quests or NPC affinity, while hiring is a shortcut if you do not want to pursue a particular reward.
What each pawn specialization does

The effects and tome descriptions are listed in Kiranico’s Dragon’s Dogma 2 item guide. No specialization is universally best: choose according to your party’s needs and how much inventory automation you want.
How to get each specialization tome
These routes come from game guides rather than a complete official Capcom unlock list. Quest rewards and affinity gifts may require a follow-up conversation; if a tome does not appear immediately, speak to the NPC again later.
Chirurgeon’s Tome
- Complete Medicament Predicament, Flora’s quest that begins in Melve.
- Find Flora at Auriol’s stall in Vernworth and speak with her again. Guides report that she gives the tome during this follow-up; if it does not appear, rest for a day and try another conversation.
Logistician’s Tome
- Complete The Heel of History in the Vernworth slums.
- Follow up with Kendrick, who is associated with the tome.
Forager’s Tome
- Complete The Heel of History in the Vernworth slums.
- Follow up with Malcolm, who is associated with the tome.
Woodland Wordsmith’s Tome
Raise your affinity with an elf in Sacred Arbor. The guides describe this as an affinity gift route, not a reward for one required quest.

Hawker’s Tome
Raise your affinity with a merchant. One route guide points to Bjorn, an armorer in Vernworth; another describes the reward more generally as a merchant-affinity gift.
Aphonite’s Tome
Raise your affinity with Eino, who is associated with the tome. The route guides do not establish that one gift guarantees the reward, so continue speaking with the NPC if it does not arrive.

NPC reward details can differ between guides, particularly around repeat tomes and the exact conversation that triggers a reward. The named characters are useful starting points, not a guarantee that one interaction will always hand over a tome. The routes are for in-game tomes, not purchasable physical products.

You can hire a pawn that already has the desired specialization rather than teaching it to your main pawn. In a rift listing, inspect the pawn’s details and specialization information before hiring. Hiring is limited by platform: Capcom says pawns can be hired only from users on the same platform. See Capcom’s platform and pawn-management FAQ.

Which specialization should you choose?
- Need item-based healing support? Choose Chirurgeon.
- Searching for upgrade materials? Choose Forager.
- Going to Sacred Arbor or dealing with Elvish? Woodland Wordsmith helps the party understand the language.
- Want inventory organization and material combining? Choose Logistician, but keep an eye on item movement and low-rarity sales.
- Want a pawn to offer to buy items? Choose Hawker, and check which items are being sold.
- Prefer less routine chatter? Choose Aphonite.
