Short answer: Buy available eggs from Raphael’s Pet Egg Stall, place them on an empty garden plot, and interact when the hatch timer ends. The best pet is the one whose trigger, target, effect and cooldown match your current job—hatching, production, mutation, event progress or support—not necessarily the pet with the highest rarity.
What “all pets” means in this guide
Grow a Garden’s pet roster changes with updates, events and community documentation. GrowGarden.wiki reported 342 catalogued pets in a 2026 search snapshot, but that is a community count rather than a permanent official total. Use the in-game Garden Guide and each pet’s current card for the live roster. The examples below document the main roles and mechanics without pretending that an old index will remain complete.
How to get pets
- Visit Raphael’s Pet Egg Stall. The shop refreshes every 30 minutes and its egg stock is random.
- Buy an egg you can afford from the current stock.
- Place the egg on an empty plot in your garden.
- Wait for the displayed hatch timer to finish, then interact with the egg to receive the pet.
Event eggs provide additional routes when their events are active. Bee, Night and Anti-Bee eggs are conditional examples; they are not guaranteed to appear in the ordinary stall. Trading can also add pets that you did not hatch yourself.

How to read a pet ability
“A pet ability is useful only when its trigger reaches the target you care about,” the Grow a Garden Wiki’s Pet Abilities Guide says (updated August 7, 2026). Read every ability through five fields:
- Trigger: what starts it—time, harvesting, an egg action, a nearby plant or another condition.
- Target: the fruit, crop, egg, pet or player object it can affect.
- Effect: the actual change, such as faster hatching, watering, growth, selling value or a mutation.
- Timing: cooldown, duration, chance and whether it activates once or repeatedly.
- Restriction: range, plant family, favorited or archived objects, event rules, or limits on duplicate effects.
“Nearby” normally means a defined radius, not your entire plot. A periodic ability, a harvest-triggered ability and an egg-triggered ability are different tools even when all are casually described as a boost.
Representative pets by job
| Job | Pet | What the documented ability does | What to verify on the live card |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seed gathering | Dog or Golden Lab | Can dig up a random seed. | Trigger frequency, eligible locations and current chance. |
| Value gathering | Bunny | Eats a grown carrot and sells it for 1.5× its value. | Whether the carrot must be eligible and how often the action occurs. |
| Egg support | Chicken | Increases egg-hatching speed. | Which eggs qualify, range and cooldown. |
| Egg support | Rooster | Described as a stronger hatch-time reducer than Chicken. | The current reduction and whether another reducer stacks. |
| Fruit size | Cat | Increases the size of nearby fruit while napping. | Nap timing, range and fruit eligibility. |
| Crop production | Cow | Increases growth speed within its range. | Exact radius, affected plants and cooldown or uptime. |
| Watering | Sea Otter | Periodically waters nearby plants. | Watering interval, range and whether watering persists offline. |
| Harvest protection | Deer | Can preserve berry-type crops after harvest. | Which berry crops qualify and the preservation chance. |
| Variant support | Pig | Emits an aura that improves nearby variant chances. | Aura radius, chance increase and interactions with other variant effects. |
| Mutation | Polar Bear | Can apply Chilled or Frozen. | Eligible targets, chance, cooldown and whether both outcomes are possible in the current version. |
| Mutation | Dragonfly | Can turn a random fruit Golden. | What counts as a valid random target and the live cooldown or chance. |
| Mutation examples | Sea Turtle or Scarlet Macaw | Community documentation lists them as mutation helpers. | Availability and exact wording; both are update-sensitive examples. |
These are representative role examples, not a permanent ranking. A pet’s rarity label cannot tell you whether its trigger reaches your target or whether its effect is useful for the crop you are actually working on.

Build a loadout around one task
Hatching session
Use Chicken or Rooster-type egg support first. Confirm that the effect applies to the egg class you are running and compare the live reduction with the remaining hatch timer.
Production session
For routine crop work, combine effects that improve growth, watering, fruit size or harvest value. Cow, Sea Otter, Cat, Bunny and seed-gathering pets serve different stages, so choose the stage that is limiting your output instead of filling every slot with a generic “boost.”
Mutation session
Use helpers whose target eligibility matches the fruit or crop you want to mutate. Polar Bear and Dragonfly illustrate different outcomes; a chance-based mutation can fail without the pet being broken.

Event session
Start with the event’s required plant or action, then select abilities that explicitly affect that target. Event-only eggs and event restrictions can make an otherwise strong general pet irrelevant for the session.

Long idle session
Favor persistent, periodic or range-based effects that continue to provide value while you are away, but verify the offline behavior of each trigger rather than assuming that every pet keeps working.
Pet-support or utility session
Use protection, variant, shop or other support effects when they solve a specific bottleneck. If two pets appear to provide the same effect, check the card for stacking rules before giving both slots to duplicates.

How to compare two pets fairly
- Task fit: does the effect improve the goal of this session?
- Trigger reliability: is it periodic, action-based or chance-based, and how often can it occur?
- Target and range: can it affect your actual plant, fruit, egg or pet?
- Cooldown and magnitude: how large is the effect and how long until it can happen again?
- Persistence: does it remain useful while idle or offline?
- Pet attributes: how do age, weight, mutation and variant affect the displayed scaling?
- Acquisition: is the pet available now, event-limited, trade-only or tied to a costly egg?
- Overlap: do duplicate effects stack, replace one another or fail to apply?
This framework is more reliable than sorting by Common, Rare, Legendary or Mythical labels alone.
Test an ability before committing a slot
- Remove pets with overlapping effects so the test has a clear baseline.
- Record the starting object, its state and the displayed timer or value.
- Place one test pet in the intended position and observe a complete trigger window.
- Repeat the same observation once under comparable conditions.
- Add a second copy only after the first pet’s effect and timing are clear.
A missed random chance is not proof that an ability is malfunctioning. Repeat enough cycles to distinguish a low probability from a failed trigger, and record the pet’s age, weight, mutation and variant alongside the result.

Traits, scaling and updates
Pet performance can change with balance updates and with the pet’s age, weight, mutation or variant. Those attributes may alter cooldowns or scaling, so two pets with the same name are not necessarily identical for a trade or loadout. Exact percentages copied from an old index can be stale; the current in-game card is the authority for the pet you own.

Restrictions also matter. An ability may exclude favorited fruit, archived content, duplicate effects or particular plant families. Read the full condition text before judging a pet from a short community description.
Do pet abilities work offline?
Official garden growth is described as continuing offline, but that does not establish that every pet trigger continues offline. Treat offline operation as conditional unless the current ability wording or a controlled test confirms it. Time-based growth, a nearby aura, a harvest action and an interaction with an egg can each follow different rules.
Practical verdict
Get pets through Raphael’s rotating egg stall, event eggs or trading, then choose them by trigger and target. Keep the live card in view, test uncertain interactions one pet at a time, and rebuild the loadout whenever your task changes. That approach remains useful even as the roster, prices, cooldowns and event availability change.
