Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. The safest in-game test is simpler: GSC Game World says that an item you cannot throw away or sell is a quest item needed for the story. Check the PDA mission log for what the active objective currently requires, and use a database or map as a lookup aid—not as a definitive count of all story items.
How to tell whether an item is a quest item
GSC Game World’s inventory instructions, updated September 11, 2026, give this rule: “If the item cannot be thrown away or sold, it is a quest item and you need it for the story.” If the game prevents you from discarding or selling an item, keep it; that restriction is the clearest non-spoiler indication that the story needs it.

For an item you can move or sell, consult the mission context before acting. The rule above identifies protected story items, but it does not turn every document, clue, or object associated with a mission into a required quest item.
Check the PDA before searching or changing an item
The PDA helps connect an item to the point you have reached in the story. Its mission log lists active and completed missions. Found documents and audio logs are stored in the PDA’s notes area, so check there if you have picked up a clue but are unsure what it relates to. See GSC’s PDA instructions.
#1 Best Overall
- Open the PDA and review the active mission objective.
- Check completed missions if you are trying to identify an item tied to an earlier objective.
- Look in the notes area for documents or audio logs you have found.
- Use the current objective to judge whether a location or object is relevant at this stage; do not assume an item is missing merely because a map marker does not match your current progress.
What the available item lists actually cover
Two third-party references can help, but their counts describe different things. Neither is an official, verified total of every unique item required for the story.
| Reference | Useful for | What its count means |
|---|---|---|
| Gamer Guides database | Searching an item name and opening an entry, including examples linked to the map. | The Quest Items category displayed 433 entries when checked October 4, 2026. That is the site’s category count, not an official total; it is not established that every entry is a unique object or required for a story mission. |
| LootMap mission-object layer | Looking up a map location or a clue-linked mission object. | The layer lists 75 mission-object markers in a guide identifying build 24914692 and dated August 25, 2026. These are map markers, not a count of every unique quest item; marker availability can depend on story progress. |
| In-game PDA | Confirming current and completed mission context and reviewing found notes. | It is a mission and notes reference, not described as an all-items database. |
Use Gamer Guides when you know an item’s name and want to inspect its entry. Use LootMap when you need a location-oriented reference. Treat both as aids: the database count and map-marker count have different scopes and neither establishes a canonical inventory.

Why a quest item or location may seem to be missing
Mission objects and their map points can depend on the active story stage. LootMap specifically warns that object positions may be conditional on story progress. Official patch notes have also documented past fixes to mission progression involving important quest items, as well as an issue involving a sold decoder. These examples do not prove that a particular item is currently bugged or permanently missable; they show why it is worth checking the objective and the game’s current state before drawing that conclusion. GSC’s official news and patch notes are the place to check for documented fixes.
- Re-read the active PDA objective and confirm you have reached the stage that calls for the object.
- Check the relevant completed mission and PDA notes for clues or documents you already collected.
- Compare the location with a map reference while accounting for its stated build and story-stage conditions.
- If progression still appears blocked, check official patch notes for a documented issue or fix relevant to your version.
Manage inventory without risking story progress
The official inventory guide recommends discarding, selling, or stashing items you do not need to reduce carry weight. Personal stashes are available at hubs and share inventory across hubs. Keep protected quest items; use the stash or sell/discard options for ordinary equipment and supplies you no longer need. GSC’s inventory and stash guide explains the system.

Why this page is not a list of all 433 entries
The Gamer Guides page displays a category count and item entries, but the available information does not establish a complete, current export cross-checked against the game, or verify that all 433 entries are unique story-required items. LootMap’s 75 markers are a location layer with a different purpose and scope. Presenting either number as “all quest items” would overstate what those references establish. For a specific item, use the in-game restriction and PDA context first, then consult the appropriate third-party reference.
A separate Nexus Mods item-command collection is not a substitute for a quest-item index: its author describes IDs for equipment, ammunition, blueprints, artifacts, consumables, and detectors, and says quest items were not included in that collection at the time described.
