This guide maps the areas where they appear and flags the one reported GameCube-to-Switch placement change.
What Star Pieces are for
Trade Star Pieces with Dazzle in Rogueport Underground to get Badges. Nintendo’s tips for the game also recommend paying attention to unusual scenery and coming back later when Mario has the right ability.
Star Piece locations by chapter and area
The area list below is a route map, not a count of pickups in each region. Chapter headings describe when locations become accessible; they do not represent separate, non-overlapping sets of pieces. Some pickups require backtracking after Mario gains a new move.

Check suspicious scenery and revisit areas
Not every Star Piece is sitting in the open. Look behind objects, in trees or grass, and beneath panels; ground-pound suspicious floor panels. If a crack, loose-looking wall, or other unusual detail seems inaccessible, make a note and return once Mario has gained another ability. Nintendo’s guidance is to treat those details as clues, not decoration.

Three areas are listed as having no Star Pieces: Shhwonk Fortress, Poshley Sanctum, and the Palace of Shadow. The path to Shhwonk Fortress does contain pieces, so distinguish the path from the fortress itself.
GameCube and Switch locations
The 2024 Switch remake location guide reports the same overall 100-piece total and locations as the GameCube game, with one small placement change. At the Rogueport blimp pipe, the GameCube Star Piece is behind the pipe; in the Switch version, check beneath a nearby floor panel instead. Use the version-specific interaction point if an older guide’s directions do not work.

Chapter-region rewards
The Super Mario Wiki location index reports that collecting all Star Pieces in a chapter region in the Switch remake unlocks that chapter’s Art Gallery. This is secondary-reference information, separate from the 100-piece total in the game.
