In All Star Tower Defense X (ASTD X), ascension and evolution are separate upgrade paths, and the materials depend on the unit. Check the target unit’s currently available options and displayed requirements in-game, then collect only what that unit needs. The community wiki’s lists are useful reference points, but verify them in the live game because they are not official developer documentation.
What does ascension do in ASTD X?
The community-maintained ASTD X Ascension wiki describes ascension as improving a unit’s stats, upgrade limit, and stat potential. It lists eligible units and their individual requirements; eligibility and recipes are not universal.
For example, the wiki lists Jackzon Blood, Rainbow Ghost III, Purple Ghost I, EXP IV, and 7,500 gold for Michishibo. Etri has a different recipe that includes Etri Rapiers and Blue Ghost I, while Magma Marine’s listed requirements include Spade’s Hat, Rainbow Ghost III, Blue Ghost I, EXP IV, and gold. These are examples from the wiki, not confirmation that the same recipes remain current in-game.
How do evolution, ascension, and leveling differ?
| System | What it does | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Ascension | The community wiki says it improves stats, upgrade limit, and stat potential. | Whether the target unit is eligible and its displayed unit-specific requirements. Ascension wiki |
| Evolution | A distinct unit-progression path that uses evolution materials. The available sources do not establish one universal effect on every unit’s form or abilities. | The target’s currently available in-game evolution option and listed materials. The wiki’s Items page describes items used for evolution and ascension. |
| Leveling | Feeding units raises another unit’s XP or level; it is not the same as evolving or ascending. | The Leveling page recommends evolving EXP units before feeding them. |
Items used for these systems are not interchangeable just because they all contribute to progression. The Items page also says challenges can provide Ghosts, hidden-potential orbs, and evolution or ascension materials.

How to check a unit’s requirements
- Select the target unit. Open that unit’s available upgrade options in the live game. The reviewed community sources do not verify a specific current menu path, so follow the labels shown in your version.
- Check eligibility and the displayed recipe. Confirm that the unit has the evolution or ascension option you want, then note every required item, unit, EXP material, or currency.
- Collect only the listed resources. Use the relevant challenges or other in-game sources for the exact materials shown; requirements vary by unit.
- Review the option again before spending. Make sure the target and displayed requirements still match before confirming the upgrade.
What to keep in mind
- Do not assume every unit can ascend or that one recipe applies across the roster.
- Treat community wiki recipes as reference examples and verify requirements in-game.
- Keep EXP feeding distinct from evolution and ascension; leveling changes XP or level rather than serving as a substitute for either path.
