There are ten Strange Inscriptions to photograph in Vatican City in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. Four are encountered during The Stolen Cat Mummy story, and the remaining photos are part of The Secret of Giants Fieldwork. Use the landmarks and access gates below rather than relying on a guide’s inscription numbers: walkthroughs label and order the sites differently.
Before you start: story progress and the camera
The first four inscription photographs are part of the main story. After obtaining the camera, follow the route through the Vatican museum garden and courtyard. The other six sites are tied to The Secret of Giants Fieldwork, and some locations remain inaccessible until their associated story areas or Fieldwork quests open.

Gamerpillar reports that completing The Mad Priest, A Savage Discovery, and A Nun in Trouble opens access to all ten areas. The guides do not use a consistent numbering scheme, so match locations by landmark and route, not by a walkthrough’s “#1” or “#2.”
Find the four early-story inscriptions
Well in the museum garden
After getting the camera, leave the Post Office and turn right through the large open doors. Enter the garden through the gate marked “Mvsei Vaticani.” At the back of the garden, look beside the scaffolding for an inscription on a well.

Fountain in the courtyard
Continue through the garden and the large doors into the alley and courtyard with the giant fountain. The inscription is on the fountain’s right side, opposite the military vehicles. Approaching the area too closely can draw suspicion from nearby fascists.
Balcony behind the stage
At the back of the fountain area, go behind the stage and climb the scaffolding to the balcony. Photograph the inscription there.
Roof reached from the opposite side
Reach the opposite side of the area and use the whip to climb the scaffolding. Pass through the open window, then climb toward the roof to find the fourth story inscription. An optional House of God Mystery is also along this route.
Find the six Fieldwork inscriptions
The remaining locations are reached as Vatican City opens up during the Fieldwork and related quests. The route descriptions below reconcile the landmark details found in Gameranx and Gamerpillar; their numbered lists do not align one-to-one, so no shared numbering is assigned here.
Belvedere Courtyard and its garden
Look for one inscription on a balcony in the Belvedere Courtyard. Another is at a fountain in a garden reached through the courtyard’s east door. The guides describe both the courtyard fountain and a garden fountain; use the specific nearby landmark rather than assuming these are the same spot.

Cellar beneath the Post Office
During A Savage Discovery, take the north alley route to the cellar and locked room beneath the Post Office. The inscription is inside the newly accessible area.
Museum Wing garden
During A Nun in Trouble, enter the Museum Wing and check its garden for an inscription.
Fountain of Confession approach
Find the inscription on the route approaching the Fountain of Confession. This is distinct from the courtyard fountain encountered earlier.

Two inscriptions are associated with Borgia Tower: one on a balcony and one on the roof. Follow the accessible exterior and upper-level routes as the area opens.
Apostolic Palace
Enter the Apostolic Palace and follow the interior halls and stairs to the inscription in that area.
Rank #3
- The story, characters, voice acting, gameplay, and music that made the original a sensation return, remade for modern consoles
- This evolutionary leap breathes new life into every cutscene, and rebuilds every corner of the world
- Incredible new graphics bring the wild growth of the jungles, forests, and swamps to life in exquisite detail
- Characters are rendered in fine detail so that facial wrinkles, pores, & separate eye & iris movements are visible, allowing for rich animations
- Any injuries to his actual body will leave their mark permanently, telling a story of each player's unique journey
Excavation Site
Check the Excavation Site for another inscription. It becomes reachable as the Vatican route progresses.
Rooftop beyond the Sistine Chapel
A further rooftop inscription is reached after meeting Gina and following the nun. Gameranx describes the location as an exterior Sistine Chapel rooftop; Gamerpillar describes a further rooftop site reached along the nun’s route. Treat the route and landmark as a guide rather than expecting their numbering to match.
How to get a valid inscription photo
Frame the whole inscription design closely. If Indy says the angle is wrong, move to a different position or adjust the zoom in or out until the full design is visible. You can turn on Objective Location Markers in Options > Adventure Experience to help locate objectives.
Turn in the photos
When you have the photographs, return to Father Antonio’s office and place them on his corkboard to complete the Fieldwork. Gameranx reports that completing it awards an Ancient Relic and the “Path of Junia” achievement. The photos can also be used for the Vatican Underworld Flame puzzle.
