There are two Thwomp quizzes in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door: one at Shhwonk Fortress in Chapter 1 and one in the X-Naut Base in Chapter 7. The Chapter 1 questions differ between the Nintendo Switch remake and the original GameCube game. In either version, answer five questions correctly to avoid the fight; for the shop-price question, add the costs of the two items named in your prompt.
Chapter 1: Shhwonk Fortress
The first Quiz Thwomp is on the route through Shhwonk Fortress toward Hooktail Castle. It asks seven questions; five correct answers are enough to avoid a battle with Cleft minions. Getting fewer right leads to a fight, but does not block your progress if you win. The Switch remake and GameCube original use different question wording and, in some cases, different answers. Twinfinite describes the encounter and its threshold; the version-specific question lists below are from Pro Game Guides.
Nintendo Switch remake
- “What is in the forest?” — Sun and Moon Stones.
- “What do one ____ and one ____ cost at the shop in Petalburg?” — Add the listed prices of the two items named. The guide gives these prices: Courage Shell, 5 coins; Fire Flower, 8 coins; Honey Syrup, 5 coins; Mr. Softener, 8 coins; Mushroom, 4 coins; and POW Block, 5 coins. For example, a Courage Shell and a Fire Flower cost 13 coins together.
- “What is the name of the mayor of Petalburg” — Mayor Kroop.
- “Where is the Crystal Star?” — Hooktail Castle.
- “How can one get from Rogueport to Petal Meadows?” — Go through a pipe.
- “Which of the following characters can be found in Petalburg?” — Koopa Troopas.
- “What number question is this?” — 7.
Original GameCube version
The GameCube quiz has its own wording. Use these answers rather than substituting the remake’s forest and Petalburg-character answers:
- Hidden item — Stone Keys.
- Petalburg shop pair — Add the prices of the two items named. The item prices listed above are the relevant values.
- Mayor of Petalburg — Kroop.
- Where is the Crystal Star? — Hooktail Castle.
- How to travel from Petalburg Meadows to Rogueport — Go through a pipe.
- Which creatures have hands? — Koopa Troopas.
- What number question is this? — 7.
Chapter 7: X-Naut Base
The second Thwomp quiz is behind a door on Sublevel 1 of the X-Naut Base. Give five correct answers to clear it. Three wrong answers trigger a battle against two X-Yux enemies, according to Twinfinite.
