Some are fixed encounters in named Wild Zones; others can appear as a chance-based spawn after you complete that zone’s survey task. They are larger, red-eyed and powerful, and can chase and attack you when they notice you.
How to recognize an Alpha Pokémon
Alpha Pokémon are larger than their ordinary counterparts and have glowing red eyes. The official Pokémon Legends: Z-A site warns that they will chase and attack once they notice you, so avoid taking hits while battling them. Their power and increased catch difficulty make an encounter riskier than an ordinary wild Pokémon.
When Alpha Pokémon start appearing
Serebii’s Alpha Pokémon reference places their broader appearance after the special mission A Big Ol’ Bunnelby, which features an Alpha Bunnelby. If you have not reached that mission, progress the story until it becomes available.
Where to find them: fixed encounters and chance spawns
Serebii’s list distinguishes guaranteed Alpha encounters from spawns that may become Alpha. Its examples of guaranteed encounters include:

These are examples, not a complete location list. Check Serebii’s entry for a specific species, zone and listed level. A fixed encounter is the more reliable option when you want to find a particular Alpha.
Chance-based spawns
Serebii reports that many—but not all—other Wild Zone spawns can appear as Alphas. Its stated chance range is 5%–40%, varying by species and location; it is not a universal rate. The reference says the chance-based mechanic for a Wild Zone activates after you complete that zone’s survey task.

- Your journey will take you to all manner of sights in the streets arrayed around Prism Tower, including shops, restaurants, and places called wild zones—where Pokémon roam free.
- As you catch, train, and battle Pokémon, there will be plenty of people to meet too—like AZ, the enigmatic owner of Hotel Z.
Wild Zones are dedicated habitats for encountering wild Pokémon, as described on the official game site. To pursue a chance-based Alpha, finish the relevant survey task, then look for eligible species in that zone. Completing a survey does not make every species there Alpha-capable.
How the reported Alpha mechanics work
The official game site establishes the visible traits and behavior, while Serebii reports additional encounter and captured-Pokémon details. Serebii’s page does not identify the game patch or version underlying those details, so treat them as reference-reported mechanics rather than a version-specific official specification.

- Guaranteed encounters: Serebii lists particular Alpha Pokémon at set locations, with their species, level and a 100% Alpha chance.
- Chance-based encounters: for eligible spawns, the reported odds vary by species and location; the reference gives a range of 5%–40% and ties activation in each Wild Zone to finishing its survey task.
- Captured traits: Serebii reports that Alphas have maximum size, three randomly assigned maximum IVs, 252 HP EVs, and a Plus Move learned through a mastered TM.
- Drops: Serebii describes drops for individual Alpha spawns, including Seed of Mastery as a possible item and Exp. Candy as another typical possibility. A drop is not guaranteed for every encounter.
How to approach and catch one
Plan for the Alpha to notice and pursue you. Official Pokémon guidance recommends avoiding hits during the battle; its general catching advice also notes that Pokémon are easier to catch after you lower their HP. You can hide or approach from behind when a Pokémon is likely to notice you, but the official guidance does not establish a special Alpha-only capture trick or a separate Alpha catch-odds formula.
- Check your target and zone. Use a location reference to determine whether the Alpha is a guaranteed encounter or a chance-based one.
- For a chance-based target, complete that Wild Zone’s survey task. The reported chance mechanic only activates for that zone after its task is done.
- Approach carefully. Use cover or approach from behind if you want to reduce the chance of being noticed.
- Battle defensively and lower its HP. Avoid its attacks; reducing HP makes wild Pokémon easier to catch according to the official general guidance.
- Expect a difficult encounter. Alphas are powerful and harder to catch than ordinary Pokémon, but no Alpha-specific catch percentage is established by the cited official guidance.
How reliable are the location and odds details?
The official Pokémon Legends: Z-A site confirms Alphas’ appearance and behavior but does not publish a detailed spawn table. The named locations, chance range and additional mechanics above come from Serebii’s reference, which was current when accessed on October 4, 2026; its page does not state an underlying game version or patch. Treat the odds and detailed traits as attributed reference information, not as an official publisher database or a guarantee that a future update will leave them unchanged.
