alrsvc.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system DLL, but it belongs to the obsolete Alerter service rather than a modern runtime such as Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET. On Windows 10 or Windows 11, an alrsvc.dll error usually points to an old application, a stale service entry, a damaged upgrade, quarantine, or a file impersonating the Microsoft component.
What this file actually does
The file’s description is Alerter Service DLL. It was part of the Windows Alerter service, which generated administrative and network alerts and worked with the older Messenger service.
Microsoft documentation says the Alerter service is unsupported beginning with Windows Vista. Historically, the component was associated with Windows NT-era releases, including:
- Windows NT systems
- Windows 2000
- Windows XP
- Windows Server 2003
Historical Microsoft technical material lists ALRSVC.DLL as the Alerter Service Library. Older service-hosting references also associate the service with Windows service infrastructure. The exact presence of the file in every edition, service pack, language pack, and system architecture is not established by an official Microsoft file manifest.

On older systems, the file was commonly located in the Windows system directory, represented by:
%SystemRoot%System32
That does not mean every copy named alrsvc.dll is legitimate. A file with that name in a temporary folder, download directory, game folder, or unrelated application directory requires verification.
There is no current official Microsoft standalone download package for alrsvc.dll. Do not treat a random DLL download sites page as a replacement for Windows servicing or application repair.
Causes by symptom
| Symptom | What it usually means | Best starting point |
|---|---|---|
alrsvc.dll is missing or was not found |
The caller cannot locate the library it expects | Identify the program and repair it |
Cannot find alrsvc.dll when one old program starts |
The program may have an obsolete hard-coded dependency | Reinstall or update that program |
Error loading alrsvc.dll |
The file may be corrupt, inaccessible, or incompatible | Check its path and signature, then run repair checks |
| Procedure entry point not found | The DLL and caller are different or incompatible versions | Use the matching application or Windows source |
| Not designed to run on Windows or contains an error | Corruption, wrong architecture, wrong version, or replacement by malware | Quarantine suspicious copies and verify the caller |
| Error appears at every boot | A stale startup, task, or service registration may still reference it | Inspect startup items, services, and Event Viewer |
| Error appears only on Windows 10 or 11 | An old program may expect a service discontinued before current Windows releases | Repair, replace, or isolate the legacy program |
The filename alone cannot identify which application, installer, update, or antivirus event caused the problem. The next step is to determine the Windows version, the full path of any copy, and the program making the request.
Before repairing anything: identify the owner
Check the Windows version
Press Win+R, enter:
winver
Select OK and record whether the computer is running Windows 10, Windows 11, or a legacy release.
If the error is on Windows 10 or Windows 11, do not try to restore the Alerter service. Microsoft does not support that service on those Windows generations. Treat the error as an application-compatibility, stale-registration, corruption, quarantine, or malware issue.
Check the expected locations
Open Command Prompt and run:
dir "%windir%System32alrsvc.dll" /a
dir "%windir%SysWOW64alrsvc.dll" /a
Possible results include:
- The file exists in
System32. - The file exists in
SysWOW64. - The file is absent from both locations.
- Access or path errors appear.
- A copy exists elsewhere but not in a Windows system directory.
Public records identify x86 variants, but there is no complete official Microsoft architecture matrix for this file. Do not assume that a 32-bit copy can satisfy a 64-bit caller, or that a file from one Windows release belongs on another.
If Windows reports an error, write down the program named in the message. If no program is named, note whether the message appears during boot, sign-in, or when opening a particular application.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteInspect the file’s signature and metadata
If a copy exists, right-click it and choose:
- Properties
- Digital Signatures
- Select the signer and choose Details
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid signature
- Check the Details tab for company and description information
A legitimate filename is not proof of authenticity. Be cautious if the file:
- Is outside the Windows directory without a clear application reason
- Has no valid Microsoft signature
- Was recently created unexpectedly
- Appears in a temporary or download folder
- Is detected by Microsoft Defender
- Runs with unexplained network or startup activity
Do not delete a suspicious file before preserving the detection and path information. Quarantine it through Windows Security or your security product so you can investigate what requested it.
Check for an old Alerter registration
Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
sc.exe query Alerter
sc.exe qc Alerter
sc.exe query displays service information. If the Alerter service does not exist on Windows 10 or Windows 11, that is expected. If an old registration does appear, do not create a replacement service or point it at a downloaded DLL. First determine which old software or migration left the entry behind.
Fix 1: Repair the application that reports the error
This is the most likely fix when the message appears only while starting one old application or game.

Reinstall from the original vendor
If Repair is unavailable or does not help:
- Back up the application’s saved data if necessary.
- Uninstall the affected program from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download or retrieve the installer from the application’s original publisher.
- Install the version intended for your Windows architecture.
- Start the program and check whether the error returns.
For a game, use the launcher’s official Repair, Verify, or Verify integrity of game files command rather than copying a DLL into the game directory.
If the program genuinely requires the discontinued Alerter service, reinstalling it may not make it compatible with Windows 10 or Windows 11. In that case, look for a vendor update or use the program in a supported older Windows environment, such as a properly isolated legacy virtual machine.
Do not copy alrsvc.dll into the application folder unless the publisher explicitly supplies that exact file for that exact release.
Fix 2: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
Antivirus software may have removed a legitimate system file, or it may have blocked a fake file using the same name.
Review the detection before restoring anything:
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Open the event related to
alrsvc.dll. - Record the original path, detection name, and action taken.
Restore a quarantined file only when all of the following are true:
- The original path matches the expected Windows or trusted application location.
- The file has a valid Microsoft or application-publisher signature.
- Its source is known.
- The detection is understood and appears to be a false positive.
- The installed Windows version or application actually needs it.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined file can cause Defender to detect it again. If the file is immediately detected after restoration, stop restoring it and investigate the detection.
If the copy is unsigned, is in an unexpected directory, or has suspicious behavior, leave it quarantined. Run:
- Windows Security
- Virus & threat protection
- Scan options
- Full scan
- Scan now
For a persistent or serious concern, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan from the same screen. A familiar Microsoft filename should never be used as the reason to whitelist a suspicious file.
Fix 3: Repair Windows component files with DISM and SFC
Use this path when the file should belong to the installed Windows image, when Windows has other system-file symptoms, or when an upgrade or repair may have damaged protected files.
Open an administrator Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
Run DISM first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to complete. DISM repairs the Windows component store, which SFC may need as a source for protected system files.
Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands finish and test the affected program again.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Typical SFC outcomes include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected Windows files passed the scan.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM first if you did not already, restart, and run SFC again.
- Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation: retry in Safe Mode or use Windows recovery options.
If you know the file is part of the current Windows image, you can also attempt a targeted scan:
sfc /scanfile=%windir%System32alrsvc.dll
This command cannot restore a file that does not belong to the current Windows image or is unavailable from the repair source. It also does not make an obsolete Alerter service supported on a modern Windows release.

Manually repeating SFC and DISM can make it difficult to see what changed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it identifies; its repair action is handled by the full version, so it is optional and not required for Microsoft’s built-in repair path.
If DISM cannot find repair files
DISM may need internet access or a matching Windows installation source. If it fails:
- Confirm that Windows can reach Microsoft update services.
- Check that the repair source matches the installed Windows edition and build.
- Use a documented
/Sourcepath from matching Windows installation media. - Run DISM again.
- Restart Windows.
- Run
sfc /scannowagain.
Do not use a Windows XP or Server 2003 copy of alrsvc.dll as a repair source for Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Fix 4: Install Windows updates
Windows Update can repair general component-store problems, although there is no evidence that current updates intentionally restore the obsolete Alerter service.
On Windows 11:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart if prompted.
- Test the application again.
On Windows 10, open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, then select Check for updates.
If the error is produced by a legacy application, updating Windows may not fix the application’s private dependency. Continue with application repair and compatibility checks rather than repeatedly replacing system files.
Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is useful if the error began immediately after a software installation, cleanup, update, driver change, or system modification.
- Press
Win+R. - Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Select OK.
- Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally rolls back system files, registry settings, and installed programs without removing personal documents. Back up important files before using recovery tools.
If no suitable restore point exists, use Windows recovery options. A reset or repair installation may be necessary when the component store is damaged and ordinary repairs cannot restore system stability.
Fix 6: Repair a genuinely legacy Windows installation
If the computer is running Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows NT, or Windows Server 2003, the missing file may be part of a damaged legacy Windows installation rather than a modern application dependency.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use, in order:
- Run System File Checker from that installation.
- Provide matching original installation media if prompted.
- Apply the correct service pack or official update source.
- Use System Restore if available.
- Consider an in-place repair installation for severe system damage.
The installation media must match the Windows release, edition, language, and architecture as closely as possible. Do not mix an XP DLL with Windows 2000, Server 2003, Vista, or later system files.
Do not register this file with regsvr32
regsvr32 is not a general-purpose DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, typically COM in-process servers.
alrsvc.dll is a service DLL loaded through Windows service configuration and the Service Control Manager. Registering it with regsvr32 is generally inappropriate and may only produce another error. Use application repair, Windows servicing, or the matching legacy installation source instead.
Do not update drivers for this DLL
There is no evidence that alrsvc.dll is a graphics, audio, chipset, printer, or other device driver component. Device Manager cannot repair this service DLL.

- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant hardware category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers or use a driver downloaded from the device manufacturer.
- Restart if required.
Do not install a driver merely because the error contains .dll. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what it finds; driver installation through the full version is optional, and it will not replace the correct repair for an application that specifically requests alrsvc.dll.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Downloading alrsvc.dll from an unverified DLL site can make the problem worse because the file may be:
- The wrong Windows version
- The wrong architecture
- Incompatible with the requesting program
- Corrupt or altered
- Unsigned
- A malware impersonation
- Missing related files or registry configuration
Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder can also bypass Windows servicing and create a version conflict.
Safe sources are:
- Windows component repair through DISM and SFC
- Matching original Windows installation media for a legacy system
- Windows Update
- System Restore
- The original application publisher’s installer or repair function
- Microsoft Defender quarantine, but only after verifying the file
Microsoft does not provide a current standalone download package specifically for alrsvc.dll.
If the error still appears
Use the error timing to find the caller.
At every boot
Check:
- Settings > Apps > Startup
- Task Manager > Startup apps
- Task Scheduler
- Services
- Event Viewer
In Event Viewer, open Windows Logs > Application and Windows Logs > System. Look for an event at the same time as the DLL error and note the executable, service, or task name.
Only with one program
The application is the primary suspect. Repair or reinstall it from its publisher, then check whether it has a compatibility update. Windows integrity repair may not fix a private copy or outdated dependency stored inside that program’s directory.
With “entry point” or architecture errors
Check whether the caller is 32-bit or 64-bit and obtain the matching application build. Public records identify x86 versions of this historical file, but they do not establish a complete official architecture and version inventory.
After restoring from quarantine
If Defender detects the file again, leave it quarantined. Verify its path, signature, origin, and detection name before taking any further action.
FAQ
Is alrsvc.dll a virus?
No. The filename belongs to a legitimate Microsoft Windows component. However, malware can use the same name. The path, digital signature, origin, and security detections matter more than the filename.
Does Windows 11 need alrsvc.dll?
The Alerter service is unsupported beginning with Windows Vista, so it is not a normal Windows 11 dependency. On Windows 11, investigate the old program or stale registration reporting the file.
Should I download alrsvc.dll and put it in System32?
No. Use DISM, SFC, Windows Update, System Restore, matching legacy media, or the application’s official installer instead.
Is alrsvc.dll part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
There is no evidence that it belongs to any of those packages. Installing those runtimes merely because the filename ends in .dll is not a supported fix.
Can I fix it with regsvr32?
Generally no. This is a service DLL, not a typical COM component that should be registered with regsvr32.
Why does an old game request this file?
The game or its installer may contain an obsolete dependency or hard-coded reference to the former Alerter service. Verify the game files, reinstall from the publisher, and check for a compatibility update.
What if SFC says everything is fine?
That indicates protected Windows files passed SFC’s check. If the error remains, the caller may be an old application, a stale startup entry, an incompatible DLL version, or a suspicious copy outside the Windows directory.
