That role is expected to begin in the Saints’ Monday game against Atlanta, but the report does not project Kamara’s carries, targets, or share of the workload.
What changes in the Saints’ backfield
Etienne reportedly aggravated his hamstring injury during New Orleans’ Week 3 loss to the Raiders and was placed on injured reserve. CBS Sports/RotoWire says Kamara is expected to lead the backfield for as long as Etienne is unavailable. The report gives no expected return date for Etienne.
Kendre Miller is expected to see more snaps behind Kamara. C.J. Donaldson, Zamir White, and Ulysses Bentley are also mentioned as possible contributors, but the report does not establish a depth-chart order or define their individual roles.
What is—and is not—known about Kamara’s workload
“Top running back” describes the expected pecking order, not a guaranteed workload. The October 2 report provides no numerical forecast for Kamara’s carries, targets, snaps, or percentage of the backfield. It also does not quantify how work might be divided among Kamara and the other available backs.

For fantasy decisions, treat the report as a change in expected role rather than a precise projection. Check the Saints’ game-week availability information and active status close to kickoff; an expectation reported before game day is not confirmation of who will play or how much.
How the role compares with the Saints’ offseason plan
Before Etienne’s injury, New Orleans had described a backfield that could use both Etienne and Kamara in different situations. At the NFL owners meetings on March 30, 2026, coach Kellen Moore called it “a great situation for us,” according to the Saints’ official report. That was pre-injury context, not a statement about the current workload or the post-injury plan.
