CloudFront’s live-streaming cost is driven mainly by how many video bytes viewers receive, which depends on concurrent viewers, average delivered bitrate, viewing time and audience geography. It is only the delivery portion of an end-to-end bill: encoding and origin or packaging services can add charges. For a useful estimate, model those pieces separately and check AWS’s current prices rather than treating a published example as a quote.
What CloudFront charges for in a live stream
In AWS’s documented live workflow, MediaLive can encode a real-time feed; MediaPackage can package it for multiple formats and optional DRM, or an origin such as MediaStore can be used when the encoded formats are already suitable. CloudFront then distributes the video to viewers. MediaPackage is not mandatory for every architecture, and the right stack depends on the source formats and delivery requirements. See AWS live delivery guidance.
That means a CloudFront estimate is not the same as the full event cost. Account separately for encoding, ingest, packaging or origination, storage where applicable, and other features. AWS’s live-streaming cost examples show a reference solution with separate encoding, packaging and distribution charges.
Estimate viewer delivery from bitrate and audience
Start with the average bitrate viewers actually receive, not automatically the highest rendition in the encoding ladder. A first-pass data-volume calculation is:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
viewers × average Mbps per viewer ÷ 8 × seconds watched
The result is megabytes under decimal units. Convert consistently to the GB or other units used by your estimate and AWS billing; AWS’s example uses GB and binary conversion factors in places, so do not silently mix decimal GB, binary GiB, Mbps and MB/s. Then apply the current rate for the relevant usage type and viewer geography. This calculation estimates delivered data, not every line on the bill.

Build low, expected and high cases
- Low: use a plausible lower average delivered bitrate, concurrency and viewing duration.
- Expected: use your best estimate of concurrent audience, average bitrate across viewers and event length.
- High: use a clearly labeled upper-side scenario, such as every viewer receiving the top rendition throughout the event.
Audience location changes applicable CloudFront pricing. The encoding ladder, average rather than peak bitrate, cache behavior, requests and whether you use a flat-rate plan also affect the estimate. Use your actual expected viewer geography and the current CloudFront pricing page.
What AWS’s published examples illustrate
AWS’s maintained deployment guide provides scenario examples, not guaranteed prices. The following figures are attributed to AWS and are a 2026 access-year snapshot; the page’s publication year is not stated. They use AWS’s stated standard-pricing assumptions for US East (N. Virginia):

| Scenario | CloudFront distribution | Other listed encoding and packaging | Example total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Approximately 1,000 viewers; one-hour SD-540p event; estimated 791 GB distribution | $67.24 | $2.50 | $69.74 |
| Approximately 10,000 viewers; one-hour HD-1080p event; estimated 18,017 GB distribution | $1,492.56 | $13.04 | $1,505.60 |
AWS says the examples are likely higher than actual costs because of simplifying assumptions, including assuming every viewer consumes the highest bitrate. It also says QVBR and variable video complexity can make output bandwidth 10–50% lower than its estimate in those examples. That is not a promised saving for another stream. AWS cautions that “Prices are subject to change.” Recalculate with current service prices and your own audience profile.
Pay-as-you-go or a CloudFront flat-rate plan?
AWS publishes both pay-as-you-go pricing and flat-rate plans. Compare the two using the same expected monthly audience and delivery assumptions; neither model is always cheaper. AWS’s public pricing page showed the following flat-rate monthly prices per distribution in its 2026 access-year snapshot. | Plan | Monthly price shown by AWS | Documented default allowance |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 1 million requests and 100 GB |
| Pro | $15 | 10 million requests and 50 TB |
| Business | $200 | 125 million requests and 50 TB |
| Premium | $1,000 | 500 million requests and 50 TB; configurable Premium levels are also documented |
AWS describes these as allowances, not hard limits. Its flat-rate plan documentation says there are no overage charges under these plans, while sustained substantial use beyond an allowance may result in adjusted delivery. Consider data volume and request count, audience geography, short-lived event peaks versus sustained use, included features, eligibility and any delivery adjustments, as well as encoding and origin costs outside the CloudFront plan.

- Define the event profile. Estimate concurrent viewers, event duration, viewer locations and average delivered bitrate. Make a separate top-rendition case if you need a conservative upper bound.
- Calculate viewer data. Multiply viewers by average Mbps per viewer, divide by eight to convert megabits to megabytes per second, and multiply by seconds watched. Convert to the units used by AWS’s pricing estimate, explicitly aligning decimal or binary units.
- Price CloudFront with current assumptions. Use the AWS Pricing Calculator and current pricing page for the relevant geographies and usage types. Avoid carrying forward a rate from an older example.
- Price other services separately. Include the services your chosen architecture actually uses, such as MediaLive encoding and MediaPackage ingest or packaging. Do not add MediaPackage automatically if your workflow does not require it.
- Budget and compare the bill. AWS recommends budgeting through Cost Explorer. When charges arrive, use the CloudFront billing guide to map line items to usage types.
Bill categories to recognize
CloudFront billing can include data transfer, request tiers, Origin Shield, invalidations, real-time logs and edge-function charges. The billing guide distinguishes data-transfer-out for bytes served to GET/HEAD viewers from HTTP/HTTPS request tiers. These charges are separate from the video’s encoding and origin or packaging services.
