For a steady, CPU-heavy YouTube encoding workload, C7i is the better-supported starting point; T3 is more appropriate when CPU use is intermittent and can benefit from burst capacity. AWS classifies video encoding as a suitable C7i workload and recommends fixed-performance instances for consistently high CPU use. That guidance is not an apples-to-apples benchmark: the right size still depends on your encoder, stream settings, and network path.
How T3 and C7i differ for streaming
| Factor | T3 | C7i |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Variable workloads that can use CPU bursts above a baseline. | Compute-heavy workloads, including video encoding, that need sustained CPU performance. |
| CPU behavior | Uses CPU credits: it earns them below its baseline and spends them above it. T3 instances start in Unlimited mode by default; sustained high use can incur additional charges under AWS’s terms. AWS T3 specifications | Fixed-performance instance family, recommended in AWS guidance for consistently high CPU workloads. AWS instance-type guidance |
| Size range and capacity | Varies by size. AWS lists t3.medium with 2 vCPUs, 4 GiB memory, and a 20% baseline per vCPU; t3.2xlarge has 8 vCPUs, 32 GiB, and a 40% baseline per vCPU. These are examples, not family-wide values. | Scales to larger compute and memory capacities. AWS lists c7i.large at 2 vCPUs and 4 GiB, c7i.8xlarge at 32 vCPUs and 64 GiB, and c7i.48xlarge at 192 vCPUs and 384 GiB. |
| Network figures | AWS lists up to 5 Gbps network burst bandwidth for t3.medium and up to 2.78 Gbps for t3.2xlarge. These are size-specific burst figures, not a promise of sustained throughput. | AWS lists up to 12.5 Gbps for c7i.large and c7i.8xlarge, and up to 50 Gbps for c7i.48xlarge. Actual bandwidth depends on size and traffic path. |
Instance specifications describe host resources, not the performance of a particular encoder or the complete route to YouTube. AWS notes that smaller instances marked “up to” may burst above network baselines using network I/O credits, and that traffic routed through an internet gateway has additional constraints. Check the EC2 network bandwidth documentation and validate sustained outbound throughput in your selected size and region.
Which family should you choose?
Choose C7i when encoding stays busy
If your encoder continuously consumes substantial CPU to produce the stream, start by evaluating C7i. Its compute-optimized design and AWS’s explicit inclusion of video encoding make it the more defensible first choice for sustained work. Select a size based on the actual encoder load and memory needs; the family label alone does not guarantee a target resolution, frame rate, or stream stability.
Consider T3 when CPU demand is uneven
T3 can suit a workload that is mostly idle or light but occasionally needs more CPU. Its credit model matters if encoding runs above baseline for long periods: credits are spent during that usage, and Unlimited mode can bring additional charges for sustained high CPU use. One CPU credit equals one vCPU running at 100% utilization for one minute, according to AWS’s T3 page. Compare the baseline for the exact size with your measured workload rather than assuming every T3 instance behaves alike.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Do not decide from vCPU count alone
A vCPU and memory comparison is useful for screening instance sizes, but it does not establish how fast a chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate will encode. Nor does a high listed network ceiling establish sustained end-to-end delivery. No cited AWS material provides a T3-versus-C7i benchmark for a specific YouTube encoder setup.
How to validate an EC2 size for your stream
- Define the stream workload. Record the encoder, codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and whether the instance will encode in real time, transcode, or simply relay an already encoded feed. Keep the YouTube ingest destination and stream configuration the same across comparisons.
- Match CPU needs to the family. For steady encoding, test C7i sizes first. For intermittent CPU demand, compare a T3 size’s baseline and credit behavior against the expected duration and intensity of the workload.
- Check memory and network capacity for the exact size. Use the AWS family pages rather than borrowing figures from another size. Treat “up to” bandwidth as a ceiling or burst claim, not a sustained-throughput guarantee; assess the selected region and route, including internet-gateway constraints.
- Run the real workload for a representative period. Observe CPU utilization, encoder output, dropped or delayed frames, and outbound throughput while sending to the intended YouTube ingest path. A short idle or synthetic test will not show whether sustained load exhausts T3 credits or whether network throughput remains sufficient.
- Compare the full operating cost. Include the instance’s regional hourly price and, for T3, any applicable surplus-credit charges. Recheck current prices for the selected operating system and region; AWS’s T3 page’s displayed price context is Linux/Unix in US East (Northern Virginia), not a universal rate.
Budget beyond the EC2 instance
The EC2 hourly charge is only one part of a live-streaming system’s cost. AWS’s planning guide treats encoding and packaging separately from distribution, so account for the services and data path your design actually uses. Its example is configuration-specific, not a general current quote. See the AWS live-streaming deployment planning guide when estimating an architecture rather than just a host.
