Short answer: neither Ubuntu nor Windows Server is a proven universal winner for YouTube streaming from Amazon EC2. Choose the operating system that supports your encoder and production workflow, then verify the exact EC2 instance, graphics driver, and graphical session. OBS’s cited system requirements cover Linux/Unix and Windows 10 or 11—not Windows Server—so do not assume OBS support on Server from its Windows entry alone. YouTube’s ingest settings are largely independent of the host OS.
What “YouTube streaming from EC2” means
This comparison is about running an encoder such as OBS on an EC2 virtual machine and sending its output to YouTube Live. It is not the same as using EC2 to remotely control a local production computer. For cloud-side encoding, the video and audio sources must be available to the VM, and the encoder must run in a working graphics session. A webcam or microphone connected to your home computer does not automatically become available to a remote EC2 instance.
If your goal is simply to operate a local camera, microphone, game, or desktop setup remotely, the capture devices and production workflow remain local; EC2 is not replacing them as the source. YouTube’s setup instructions have the encoder send a server URL and stream key, while hardware such as a webcam or microphone connects to the encoder.
Ubuntu vs. Windows Server: what the evidence supports
| Decision point | Ubuntu / Linux | Windows Server |
|---|---|---|
| OBS requirements cited | OBS lists Linux/Unix requirements: an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and X window system or Wayland. | OBS lists Windows 10 or 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU; the cited requirements do not list Windows Server. Confirm compatibility for the specific Server release and OBS version. |
| Software fit | A reasonable choice when the encoder, plugins, and administration workflow support Linux. | A reasonable candidate when a required production application or workflow needs Windows, but validate that it works on the chosen Server release. |
| Graphics and encoding | Depends on the instance, compatible driver, graphics session, encoder, and workload. | Depends on the instance, compatible driver, graphics session, encoder, and workload. |
| Relative performance or cost | No controlled Ubuntu-versus-Windows Server benchmark or matched regional EC2 price comparison is established here. Check current instance, AMI, licensing, and regional prices; do not infer a winner from the OS name. | |
OBS warns that meeting its basic requirements does not guarantee that a computer can stream or record adequately. Encoder choice, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity affect CPU and GPU demand. That is why a representative test on your actual instance is more useful than a blanket claim that one OS streams better.

Check graphics, sources, and the session before choosing
- Instance and driver: AWS describes GPU-based EC2 instances for graphics workloads, including game and 3-D application streaming, and says the appropriate GPU driver must be installed. Its NVIDIA driver guidance covers different driver families and lists NVENC among supported APIs. Confirm the exact instance and driver combination before relying on hardware encoding; GPU availability alone does not prove that OBS can use it.
- Graphics session: OBS’s listed Linux requirements include X window system or Wayland. A server-side OBS workflow needs a functioning session and accessible video and audio sources. The cited guidance does not provide a complete unattended EC2 desktop recipe.
- Media and peripherals: Make sure the instance can access the files, audio, or other inputs you intend to stream. A local webcam, microphone, or headset is optional production gear, not an OS-specific requirement for EC2. If you need live local capture, plan how that source reaches the cloud encoder.
- Driver and encoder test: Verify that the encoder option you intend to use appears and works with the installed driver. Do not promise NVENC or another hardware encoder until you have validated it on the selected configuration.
Set YouTube’s ingest settings independently of the OS
YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends selecting a reliable quality that fits available upload bitrate, testing before going live with representative audio and movement, and monitoring stream health during the event. YouTube transcodes live streams into formats for viewers on different devices and networks; that does not remove the need for a stable encoder-to-YouTube connection.
Protocol, codecs, and keyframes
- YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the stream into and through Google’s servers. Use it when supported by your encoder.
- For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s settings page lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and AAC or MP3 audio.
- Use a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says it should not exceed four seconds.

| Output | Codec | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | H.264 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | H.264 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
The EC2 encoder and network path must sustain the rate you select. Treat the recommended bitrate as a starting point, not proof that the instance can encode or deliver it. Use a speed test to assess upload capacity, then check YouTube’s stream health with your real scene and audio.
Set up and test an EC2 encoder with YouTube Live
- Create or select the YouTube stream: In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select a stream. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or share it with anyone who should not broadcast to your channel.
- Prepare the EC2 host: Install OBS or another encoder compatible with the selected OS. Confirm the exact OS release, encoder version, graphics driver, and graphical session work together. Make sure the source files or inputs are accessible from the VM.
- Configure the encoder: Enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key. Choose RTMPS if the encoder supports it, then set a supported codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR, audio format, and two-second keyframe interval. Use the bitrate table as an initial guide for the matching 1080p output.
- Start sending and inspect the preview: Start the encoder’s stream output. In Live Control Room, wait for the incoming signal and check the preview and stream health before going live.
- Test the real workload: Use representative movement, scene changes, and audio. If the connection or stream health is unstable, reduce bitrate or output quality and test again. Do not assume a successful static desktop test proves a demanding game scene will work.
- Go live: Once the preview and health indicators are acceptable, use Live Control Room’s go-live controls. YouTube’s encoder flow is not specific to Ubuntu or Windows.
Troubleshooting common EC2 streaming problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS will not launch or has no usable display | Unsupported OS/version assumptions, missing graphics support, or an unavailable desktop session. | Confirm the exact OBS and OS compatibility, required graphics APIs, installed driver, and active graphical session. For Windows Server, do not rely on the Windows 10/11 requirement as confirmation. |
| Hardware encoder is missing | The instance or driver may not expose a compatible hardware-encoding path. | Check the EC2 instance type and its appropriate installed GPU driver. Test the available encoder in OBS before building the workflow around it. |
| YouTube does not receive a signal | Incorrect server URL or stream key, encoder not sending, or a connection problem. | Copy the URL and key again from the selected Live Control Room stream, confirm the encoder is actively sending, and inspect YouTube’s incoming preview. |
| Stream health is poor or output drops | The chosen bitrate may exceed what the encoder or network path can sustain, or the workload may be too demanding. | Test representative content, reduce bitrate or quality, and monitor stream health again. A bitrate recommendation is not an EC2 guarantee. |
| Video works but expected microphone or camera is absent | The device is connected to the local computer rather than being available to the EC2 VM. | Use media and audio sources accessible to the VM, or redesign the workflow to deliver local capture into the cloud encoder. |
Which should you choose?
- Choose Ubuntu when Linux fits your encoder and administration needs, and you can provide the required graphics driver and X/Wayland session.
- Consider Windows Server when your production software requires Windows, but verify support for the precise Server and OBS versions rather than extrapolating from Windows 10/11 requirements.
- Choose neither on assumed performance grounds. No controlled comparison establishes that Ubuntu or Windows Server delivers better YouTube quality or lower EC2 cost in general. Test your defined instance, driver, encoder, scene, and region.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a prerecorded-video stream that stays live on YouTube without maintaining an EC2 desktop and OBS workflow, StreamNeo is a purpose-built alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. It streams uploaded videos to YouTube, not from a live camera. To try it, start a StreamNeo free day.
