Yes, Amazon is sharply reducing its MMO ambitions—but it is not abandoning games, online services, or every MMO-related project. The company has reportedly cut a significant amount of first-party AAA development focused on MMOs, ended new-content plans for New World, and is preparing to hand Western operations for Lost Ark and Throne and Liberty back toward their original developers.
That is a major retreat from building and directly operating large MMOs, not a complete exit from the genre.
What Amazon actually announced
In an internal announcement reported on October 28, 2025, Amazon Games said it would halt a “significant amount” of its first-party AAA game development, with MMOs specifically identified as an area being reduced. The changes included major role reductions at the company’s Irvine and San Diego studios and in central publishing teams, as part of Amazon’s wider reduction of more than 14,000 corporate jobs.
The wording matters. First-party development means games made through Amazon’s own studios, such as New World. It is different from publishing partnerships, in which an outside developer makes the game and Amazon publishes or operates it in selected markets. It is also different from live operations: updates, events, servers, monetization, customer support, moderation, and community management after launch.

The reported announcement did not say Amazon would stop publishing every MMO or leave online gaming altogether. It signaled a smaller, less risky games portfolio and a reduced appetite for carrying the full development-and-live-service burden itself. PC Gamer and GamesRadar reported that Luna, casual games, and AI-focused projects remained areas of interest.
New World is the clearest casualty
New World was developed and published by Amazon, launching in September 2021 as a persistent MMO. Amazon later released New World: Aeternum for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
Following the 2025 cuts, Amazon said the final content release would be the Season 10/Nighthaven update. The game could remain playable temporarily, but it would no longer have a normal long-term content roadmap. That makes this a wind-down rather than merely a slower update schedule.
Later reporting placed the expected server shutdown on January 31, 2027. That date should be treated as a reported schedule unless Amazon’s latest official service notice confirms it. Amazon’s support hub and system-requirements page document the existing service and supported platforms, but support documentation is not evidence of continued content investment.
For players, the practical conclusion is straightforward: New World is not a sensible choice for anyone seeking a newly expanding, long-term Amazon MMO. Check Amazon’s current shutdown, refund, and store-status notices before buying the game or spending more on it.

What happened to Amazon’s Lord of the Rings MMO?
Amazon and Embracer announced a new Lord of the Rings MMO in May 2023, with Amazon Games Orange County named as the developer. The project was intended to be an Amazon-led MMO based on Tolkien’s world.
After the 2025 restructuring, reporting said the announced MMO had been canceled, or that much of its relevant development staff had been lost. Amazon later said it was still evaluating concepts for a “compelling new game experience” set in Tolkien’s world.
The most accurate description is therefore narrower than “Amazon canceled Lord of the Rings games.” The publicly announced MMO no longer appears to be proceeding in its described form, but Amazon’s interest in making another Tolkien game has not necessarily ended. That future project could be an RPG, action game, online title, or something else. Amazon has not established its genre, developer, production status, or release plans.

It is also unknown whether a new Tolkien project would retain the original MMO’s technology, design, staff, or scope. Amazon’s original announcement, Game Developer’s report, and later reporting on Amazon’s position support that distinction.
Amazon is also stepping back from MMO publishing
The retreat is not limited to games made internally. Amazon is also expected to reduce its role in two externally developed MMOs:

Lost Ark was developed by Smilegate and Throne and Liberty by NCSoft; Amazon did not create either game. The reported handoffs show Amazon withdrawing from Western publishing and live-service responsibilities while the games themselves are expected to continue.
Players should watch for official instructions covering account transfers, purchases and currencies, regional servers, customer support, guilds, friends lists, mail, chat history, and other social data. Reporting on the Lost Ark transition has indicated that some social and communication data may not transfer. PC Gamer and GamesRadar have reported on the expected changes.

Is Amazon leaving game development?
No. The evidence points to a change in portfolio and risk tolerance rather than a total withdrawal from games.
- Amazon remains involved in selected external AAA publishing and development relationships, including reported continued work on projects such as Tomb Raider.
- Amazon continues to operate Prime Gaming and promote Luna cloud gaming.
- Reporting has identified casual and AI-focused games as continuing areas of interest.
- Amazon retains relationships with outside developers, valuable entertainment licenses, and distribution through its wider ecosystem.
AWS also remains a major technology provider for multiplayer games. AWS has described the infrastructure behind New World, including services such as EC2, DynamoDB, Kinesis, Lambda, and API Gateway, in its technical account of the game’s architecture. That demonstrates Amazon’s cloud expertise—not a commitment by Amazon Games to finance and operate more MMOs.
Why reduce MMO investment?
Amazon has not publicly established one definitive reason for every project change. Several industry factors help explain why MMOs are an especially demanding bet:

- Long development cycles: large MMOs can require years of development before generating revenue.
- Permanent operating costs: servers, security, customer support, moderation, and infrastructure continue after launch.
- Content pressure: players expect regular expansions, events, balance work, and bug fixes.
- Retention risk: a launch can attract a large audience without creating a stable long-term community.
- Organizational scale: successful MMOs need sustained cooperation between development, publishing, community, and operations teams.
These are analytical factors, not proof that any particular Amazon MMO lost a specific amount of money. Amazon does not publicly disclose detailed profitability for each title in the evidence available here. The layoffs demonstrate strategic retrenchment, but they do not independently prove that New World, Lost Ark, or Throne and Liberty failed financially.

New World players
Expect a maintenance period rather than a new era of expansion. Follow Amazon’s official support notices for the final content schedule, shutdown timing, refunds, and account-related policies. Avoid treating continued server availability as a promise of future development.
Lost Ark players
The reported early-2027 transfer to Smilegate is not a shutdown announcement. However, save or review important account information and monitor official transfer instructions. Pay particular attention to what happens to characters, purchases, currencies, guilds, friends, mail, and communication data.
Throne and Liberty players
The expected fourth-quarter 2026 move to NC/FirstSpark is likewise a change in Western operator. Watch for details on account continuity, support channels, regional service terms, and whether the transfer changes the content or monetization schedule.
Players considering spending money
For any Amazon-operated MMO facing a transition or wind-down, verify the latest official service status before making a purchase. A game can remain playable while its long-term content plans have ended, and a publisher transfer can change support and account policies.

Fans waiting for Lord of the Rings
Do not assume the 2023 MMO is still in production, but do not assume Amazon has abandoned Tolkien’s world altogether. Until Amazon announces a developer, genre, production status, and release plan, the next project should be regarded as exploratory.
The broader strategic shift
Amazon’s games strategy now looks less like an attempt to build a large first-party MMO portfolio and more like a selective combination of publishing, established intellectual property, cloud gaming, and smaller or experimental projects.
That approach reduces Amazon’s exposure to the most expensive part of the MMO business: owning the entire pipeline from development through years of live operations. It also leaves room for Amazon to work with external studios or revisit online games if a project’s risk, audience, and operating model fit its narrower strategy.
It would be an overstatement to say Amazon no longer makes AAA games, that Luna will completely replace its AAA strategy, or that the MMO genre is finished. The defensible conclusion is more specific: Amazon is cutting back on first-party MMOs and relinquishing some MMO publishing duties while remaining active in games overall.
