Yes—Amazon Luna lets Prime members play selected games together without buying a console or giving every player a gamepad. The important catch is that the game usually streams to one shared screen, such as a compatible Fire TV, smart TV, computer, or tablet. Players scan a QR code and use their phones or tablets as touchscreen controllers.
What Amazon changed
Amazon Luna has two related Prime benefits. First, Prime members receive access to a rotating selection of Luna cloud games at no additional Luna charge. The selection changes over time, so inclusion with Prime does not mean that every Luna game—or any particular title—will remain available permanently. Amazon’s October 2025 launch FAQ described more than 50 Prime-access games and more than 25 GameNight titles at launch; those figures should not be treated as current catalog totals.
Second, on July 23, 2026, Amazon announced that Prime members in the United States and United Kingdom could access Luna games through a new Games tab in the Prime Video app on compatible Fire TV devices. The games stream to the Fire TV while phones provide the controls. This rollout is not a global promise, and the Games tab may not appear on every Fire TV model, account, or region. Amazon’s announcement identifies the initial U.S. and U.K. scope.
Do the phones run the games?
No—not in the main GameNight experience. Luna renders the game on the host screen. A player’s phone or tablet opens a browser-based controller interface after scanning the QR code shown on the main display.

That means this is generally local multiplayer around one shared screen, not a service where every participant streams the same game independently to their own phone. The distinction matters: you still need a compatible TV, computer, or tablet to display the game, plus a reliable internet connection.
How to start a Luna GameNight session
- Open Luna on a supported TV, desktop, or tablet, or open the Luna Games experience through Prime Video on an eligible Fire TV.
- Find a title in the GameNight collection. Amazon says you can use Luna search and select the GameNight Games filter, or open the GameNight landing page.
- Start the game and wait for the pairing prompt or QR code.
- Have each player scan the QR code with a phone or tablet.
- Follow the instructions in the phone’s browser to join the session.
- Use the touchscreen controls displayed on each device, then begin the game once everyone is connected.
Exact prompts can vary by device and software version. Amazon’s GameNight support page is the best reference if the on-screen instructions differ from this general path.
What you need
- A Prime membership for the host, when the host is using a Prime-included game. See Amazon’s current Prime page for eligibility and pricing.
- A supported host device: Fire TV, select Samsung or LG smart TVs, eligible Xfinity devices, Fire tablets, Windows PCs, Macs, Chromebooks, and some iOS and Android use cases. Support varies by country, device, and feature.
- A compatible GameNight title. Not every Luna game supports phone controllers or local multiplayer.
- One compatible phone or tablet per player. Each device needs internet access and a supported modern browser.
- A stable internet connection. Because the game is cloud-streamed, latency and connection quality affect play.
The broad Luna device list should not be confused with the Prime Video Games tab. The July 2026 announcement specifically concerns compatible Fire TV devices in the U.S. and U.K. If you do not see the tab, try opening Luna directly on another supported device.

Do guests need Prime or a Luna subscription?
Invited players do not need their own Luna subscription to join a supported GameNight session, according to Amazon’s support documentation. They still need a compatible phone or tablet, a supported browser/controller interface, and access to the host’s joining flow.
The host and guests therefore have different requirements:
- Host: must have access to the game, normally through Prime or another applicable Luna entitlement.
- Guests: can join compatible GameNight sessions without separately subscribing to Luna.
- Everyone: needs a supported device and an active connection, and the selected game must support GameNight multiplayer.
“No subscription required” applies to invited GameNight participants. It does not mean that anyone can independently stream every Luna title without an entitlement.

What games are a good fit?
GameNight is aimed at living-room groups: party, quiz, arcade, cooperative, and other approachable local multiplayer experiences. Touch controls make it easier for visitors or family members to join without learning a traditional gamepad.
The wider Luna catalog is different. Some games are single-player, some support conventional multiplayer rather than GameNight, and others are better suited to a physical controller, keyboard, and mouse. Do not assume that every game in Luna’s Prime selection can be controlled by phones.

Advantages and limitations
Why it is worth trying
- Minimal hardware: an existing compatible Fire TV, computer, or tablet may be enough.
- Low guest friction: friends can use phones they already own instead of bringing controllers.
- Fast access: cloud delivery avoids downloading and installing games.
- Good casual-party format: the shared screen and touchscreen controls suit short group sessions.
- Useful Prime value: existing members can try the included selection without adding a separate Luna charge.
Why it is not a complete console replacement
- Cloud dependence: lag, Wi-Fi congestion, outages, and latency can affect play.
- Rotating catalog: Prime-included games can change.
- Limited phone support: the phone-controller experience is primarily associated with GameNight, not all Luna games.
- Shared-screen requirement: the natural group format needs one host display.
- Touchscreen compromises: phones are less precise and comfortable than physical controls for many fast-action games.
- Regional and device limits: availability differs across countries and products.
Amazon has also changed Luna’s commercial direction. Its support documentation says individual game purchases, game stores, and third-party subscriptions would no longer be offered beginning April 10, 2026, with separate deadlines affecting some legacy access. Luna is therefore increasingly positioned around Amazon-provided and Prime-included content rather than as a general cloud storefront. Check Amazon’s notice for the applicable legacy details.

The Games tab is missing
Confirm that the Fire TV model and account region are eligible, then update Fire TV and Prime Video. Also check that the account has an active Prime entitlement. If the tab remains unavailable, open Luna directly on a supported device. The Prime Video integration announced in July 2026 was limited to compatible Fire TV devices in the U.S. and U.K.
The QR code will not connect
Check that the phone has internet access and that its camera can read QR codes. Use the code from the active session, keep the controller page open, and refresh it if necessary. Restarting the session can help if the pairing prompt has timed out or the game has reached its player capacity. Amazon has not established one universal player limit for every GameNight title.

A guest cannot join
Confirm that the game is a GameNight title, the guest is using a compatible phone or tablet, and the browser has loaded the controller page correctly. Not needing a Luna subscription does not remove those device, browser, connection, or game-compatibility requirements.
The phone disconnects or becomes unresponsive
Keep the browser tab open, temporarily disable aggressive battery optimization, and check the phone’s Wi-Fi or cellular connection. If touchscreen controls are a poor match for the game, use a supported Bluetooth gamepad instead.
The game is laggy
Where possible, connect the host device by Ethernet. Move the router or TV away from interference, pause downloads and high-bandwidth video streams, try a less congested 5-GHz Wi-Fi network, and restart the router and host device. Testing another Luna title can show whether the problem is game-specific or affects the whole connection. There is no single minimum bandwidth figure that should be applied to every Luna device and feature without checking current Amazon documentation.

Verdict
Luna GameNight is a worthwhile Prime benefit for families, visitors, and casual groups that already have a compatible screen and want quick multiplayer without buying several controllers. Its phone feature is convenient precisely because the phones are temporary controllers—not because Luna turns every handset into an independent cloud-gaming console.

Try it if you already have Prime and supported hardware. Do not buy a Fire TV solely for occasional party sessions unless the wider streaming device is useful to you, and do not expect GameNight to replace a console, PC, or physical gamepad for demanding games. For conventional Luna titles, a supported Bluetooth controller may still provide the better experience.
