AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 25.5.1 is a May 8, 2025 Windows driver release, not a current 2026 driver. It added Radeon RX 9070 GRE support, launch support for DOOM: The Dark Ages and F1 25, more FSR 4 and HYPR-Tune game profiles, Vulkan 1.4 support, and several fixes. It also shipped with unresolved VR, Cyberpunk 2077, Battlefield, Monster Hunter Wilds, and Warzone issues.
Install it when you need one of those game or hardware additions, or when a listed fix addresses your problem. A stable system with no specific need can reasonably stay on its current driver.

What 25.5.1 adds
Radeon RX 9070 GRE support
The main Windows package officially supports AMD’s Radeon RX 9070 GRE. AMD noted that Linux packages for this product were expected later in May; this release is the Windows package.
New game support
- DOOM: The Dark Ages
- F1 25
This is launch-oriented support, not a promise of a universal performance increase.
FSR 4 additions
AMD added FSR 4 support in the driver-and-game ecosystem for:

- Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal heat transfer, lowering GPU temperatures for enhanced performance and reliability
- 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
- Dual-ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as standard conventional sleeve bearings designs
- 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
- Ghost of Tsushima DIRECTOR’S CUT
- EVERSPACE 2
- Fort Solis
- Warhammer 40,000: Darktide
- THE FINALS
- InFlux Redux
FSR 4 remains title-specific. Game updates, compatible Radeon hardware, implementation quality, image settings, and performance targets still determine what you actually get; installing the driver does not add FSR 4 to every game.

AMD listed HYPR-Tune support for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Marvel Rivals, Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, and Path of Exile 2. HYPR-RX combines several Radeon features and presets. Results depend on the GPU, CPU limit, resolution, frame generation, latency settings, and image-quality compromises, so it is not a guaranteed FPS gain.
Vulkan 1.4
The package adds Vulkan 1.4 and these extensions: VK_EXT_shader_replicated_composites, VK_KHR_maintenance8, and VK_EXT_image_2d_view_of_3d. Developers, emulators, Vulkan applications, and games adopting those APIs benefit most; the update is not a blanket frame-rate upgrade.

Fixes in the main package
- Factory-reset installation could fail to detect the integrated camera on some Ryzen AI Max and Max+ systems.
- AMD Chat installation could remain at 0% after upgrading to an RX 9000-series card.
- A SteamVR memory leak could eventually crash some Radeon systems, including RX 9000-series cards. AMD’s workaround if it persists is to disable SteamVR Motion Smoothing.
- Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition could intermittently crash or time out.
- Civilization VII could intermittently crash or time out with Anti-Lag enabled.
- The Adrenalin interface could intermittently fail to open from the desktop context menu or system tray.
Separate Polaris and Vega release
Older cards do not use the same build. AMD published a separate Polaris and Vega package with driver version 23.19.23.01. It covers Radeon VII, RX Vega, Radeon Pro Duo, RX 500/500X, RX 400, Radeon 600-series mobile products, and certain Ryzen, Ryzen PRO, and Athlon processors with Radeon graphics.
Its listed fixes are different: an intermittent crash or freeze in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, and an intermittent crash in DOOM (2016) when using the Alt+R or Alt+Z hotkeys. Do not assume that the main package’s features, fixes, or compatibility apply to these products.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Laptops, all-in-ones, handhelds, and Boot Camp
AMD recommends the computer manufacturer’s driver for laptops and all-in-ones. OEM packages may be validated for display switching, brightness, sleep and resume, hotkeys, external monitors, power management, and vendor-specific tuning. A generic AMD package can provide newer game support but may disrupt those functions.
Adrenalin does not support handheld gaming devices through this package; use the handheld maker’s driver. It is also not intended for Apple Boot Camp systems; contact the system manufacturer instead.
Should you install 25.5.1?
Install it now if
- You own an RX 9070 GRE and need official Windows support.
- You need launch support for DOOM: The Dark Ages or F1 25.
- You specifically want the listed FSR 4 game support.
- You are affected by a problem AMD says this release fixes.
- Your current driver is unstable and one of the documented fixes matches your symptoms.
Stay on your current driver if
- Your desktop is stable and none of the new games or features matter to you.
- You use a laptop with a validated OEM driver and depend on its power, display, or sleep behavior.
- You rely on VR at 80/90 Hz, Cyberpunk 2077, Monster Hunter Wilds with Anti-Lag or Instant Replay, affected Battlefield configurations, or the affected Warzone map.
- You use extensive undervolting or overclocking and cannot readily retest stability.
WHQL means Microsoft certification; it does not mean every game and hardware combination is issue-free. New-game support can be more valuable than a benchmark difference, while HYPR-RX or FSR 4 can alter latency, image quality, power use, or frame pacing.
Installation and rollback
- Confirm your exact GPU model and Windows version.
- Choose the correct package: the main release for supported RDNA/RX 5000-and-newer products, the separate Polaris/Vega release for legacy products, or your OEM package for a laptop or all-in-one.
- Download from AMD’s official release page, not a mirror. AMD requires administrator access.
- Create a restore point and record your Adrenalin tuning, recording, overlay, and per-game settings.
- After installation, test the games and features you actually use instead of assuming a completed installer proves compatibility.
If the update causes trouble
- Reboot and retry once.
- Check whether Windows replaced or reverted the display driver.
- Temporarily disable overlays, Anti-Lag, Instant Replay, and third-party monitoring while isolating crashes.
- Use AMD’s official uninstall guidance for a clean reinstall only if simpler steps fail.
- On a laptop, return to the OEM driver if brightness, display switching, sleep, or power behavior breaks.
- Roll back to the previous known-good driver when the affected game or workload is more important than the new release’s additions.
The Bottom Line
Adrenalin 25.5.1 is a targeted May 2025 release rather than a universally necessary upgrade. RX 9070 GRE owners, players needing DOOM: The Dark Ages or F1 25 support, and users who need its listed fixes have the clearest reason to install it. Everyone else should weigh those benefits against AMD’s unresolved game, VR, and hardware-specific issues—and laptop owners should normally prefer their manufacturer’s driver.
