AMD Confirmed Its RDNA 4 Radeon RX 9000 GPUs for March 6, 2025—What Happened Next

AMD announced RDNA 4 on February 28, 2025, and released the RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 on March 6. Here are the specifications, launch prices, later lineup additions and what matters when buying in 2026.

AMD announced its RDNA 4 architecture and the first Radeon RX 9000 graphics cards on February 28, 2025. The Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 went on sale through board partners on March 6, 2025, at launch MSRPs of $599 and $549 respectively. That launch is now historical, not an upcoming “early March” release.

The lineup later expanded with the RX 9060 XT, while real-world pricing, partner-card designs and game support—not the original MSRP alone—became the key buying considerations.

What AMD actually confirmed

AMD’s February 28, 2025 announcement covered both the RDNA 4 architecture and its first products: the Radeon RX 9070 XT and Radeon RX 9070. AMD said partner cards from Acer, ASRock, ASUS, Gigabyte, PowerColor, Sapphire, Vastarmor, XFX and Yeston would become available beginning March 6, 2025. The announcement and launch details are documented in AMD’s release.

AMD did not introduce a conventional first-party reference card for the 9070 series, so buyers primarily encountered partner-designed models with different coolers, dimensions, clocks, acoustics and prices.

The March 2025 launch cards

GPU Availability Launch MSRP Memory Bus Typical board power
Radeon RX 9070 XT March 6, 2025 $599 16GB GDDR6 256-bit 304W
Radeon RX 9070 March 6, 2025 $549 16GB GDDR6 256-bit 220W

“Early March” referred specifically to this March 6 availability date. It did not mean every future RX 9000 model would launch at the same time.

  • 128 AI accelerators
  • 16GB GDDR6 and a 256-bit memory interface
  • Up to 640GB/s memory bandwidth and 64MB Infinity Cache
  • Up to a 2,970MHz boost clock
  • 304W typical board power
  • AMD-recommended 750W power supply and two 8-pin connectors

These figures come from AMD’s RX 9000 quick-reference guide.

Radeon RX 9070 specifications

The RX 9070 uses 56 compute units, 3,584 stream processors, 56 ray accelerators and 112 AI accelerators. It retains 16GB of GDDR6 on a 256-bit interface and has 220W total board power. AMD’s detailed specifications are listed on its graphics specifications page.

What RDNA 4 changed in practice

AMD describes RDNA 4 as improving ray tracing, AI acceleration, efficiency, visual quality and upscaling. Those are AMD’s architectural claims; overall performance still depends on the game, resolution, driver and enabled features.

Ray tracing and AI hardware

The 9070 cards add more capable ray-tracing hardware than prior Radeon generations and dedicated AI accelerators. AI acceleration can help supported gaming and media features, but it does not make every professional machine-learning or creator application equivalent to a CUDA-optimized Nvidia workflow.

FSR 4 support

AMD says FSR 4 uses an ML-based algorithm and RDNA 4 FP8 matrix hardware. FSR 4 is not a universal driver switch: it requires supported hardware and game-level integration, and AMD notes that FSR versions are available only in select games and on select products. See AMD’s current Radeon product page for compatibility information.

Memory and display connectivity

Both launch models provide 16GB of GDDR6 rather than GDDR7. That gives more memory headroom than 8GB cards, but it does not guarantee future performance. PCIe 5, DisplayPort 2.1a and HDMI 2.1b support modern displays and platforms.

How the cards performed

Independent testing generally placed the RX 9070 XT as a strong 1440p and 4K card, with competitive rasterization against GeForce RTX 5070-class products. Tom’s Hardware’s GPU hierarchy places the RX 9070 XT ahead of the RTX 5070 in aggregate testing and reports that it can exceed the RX 7900 XTX in its ray-tracing tests. Results vary by game, rendering mode, resolution, driver and whether upscaling or frame generation is enabled.

The RX 9070 occupies the lower price and power tier while targeting high-refresh 1440p and entry-level 4K. Tom’s Hardware’s independent review is a useful reference for the launch-era comparison rather than a guarantee for every partner model.

Average frame rate is only part of the decision. Check 1% lows, ray-tracing results, upscaling quality, VRAM use, power draw, noise and the exact cooler fitted to the card you intend to buy.

The RX 9000 family grew after March

AMD announced the Radeon RX 9060 XT at Computex on May 20, 2025, not alongside the 9070 launch. The announcement is recorded in AMD’s Computex release.

The RX 9060 XT came in 8GB and 16GB versions, with 32 compute units. The 16GB model uses a 128-bit bus and has 160W total board power, targeting mainstream 1080p and 1440p systems. Tom’s Hardware’s 16GB review favored that version for newer games and heavier texture settings, while noting Nvidia advantages in some software and upscaling scenarios. AMD’s current listings also show the RX 9070 GRE in additional markets; availability is region-specific.

Launch price versus what buyers paid

The $599 and $549 figures were launch MSRPs, not promises that every partner card would remain at those prices. Premium coolers, factory overclocks, white designs, limited stock and retailer markups pushed many cards higher, and launch coverage recorded rapid sell-outs (Tom’s Hardware availability report).

Tom’s Hardware’s June 2026 buying guide reported median street prices of approximately $759 for the RX 9070 XT, $634 for the RX 9070 and $464 for the RX 9060 XT 16GB. These are dated market snapshots, not permanent prices; another 2026 report observed the RX 9070 XT around $719 (buying guide; price report).

Which Radeon makes sense?

Choose the RX 9070 XT when

  • You want high-refresh 1440p or 4K gaming.
  • You value rasterized performance and 16GB of VRAM.
  • It is priced competitively against RTX 5070 Ti-class alternatives.
  • Your case, airflow and power supply can handle a roughly 304W partner card.

Choose the RX 9070 when

  • 1440p is your main target.
  • Lower power, heat or noise matters more than maximum performance.
  • The price gap to the XT is large enough to justify the lower compute resources.

Choose the RX 9060 XT 16GB when

  • You mainly play at 1080p or moderate 1440p settings.
  • You want 16GB capacity in a lower-power mainstream system.
  • You can accept lower performance than the 9070 models.

Treat the 8GB RX 9060 XT more cautiously for new demanding games: texture settings and frame-time consistency can be affected by memory limits, depending on the title.

When Nvidia is the better fit

  • CUDA-dependent applications or Nvidia-optimized AI and creator software are central to your workload.
  • You rely on DLSS, frame generation or a specific game’s Nvidia implementation.
  • Ray tracing performance or software compatibility matters more than AMD’s rasterization value.
  • An RTX 5070 or RTX 5070 Ti is cheaper than the comparable Radeon after current pricing is considered.

There is no single best RX 9000 card independent of price. Compare the exact partner model, cooler dimensions, power connectors, warranty, current street price and the games or applications you actually use.

The Bottom Line

AMD’s “early March” RDNA 4 launch happened on March 6, 2025: the RX 9070 XT launched at $599 and the RX 9070 at $549. The cards delivered competitive 1440p and 4K rasterization with 16GB of VRAM, but by 2026 their value depended far more on street price, partner-card quality and whether AMD’s software ecosystem met your needs.
