AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) 2.1 can make compatible games look smoother by generating extra frames in the driver, but a higher FPS counter does not equal the same improvement in input response. AFMF is most useful when a game lacks good built-in frame generation, the underlying frame rate is reasonably stable, and the player accepts occasional image artifacts. It is usually a poor choice for low base frame rates, competitive games, or titles with better native frame generation.

What AMD Fluid Motion Frames does

AFMF is AMD’s driver-level frame-generation technology. It analyzes rendered frames and inserts interpolated frames between them through AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition. Unlike ordinary rendering, the generated frame is not a new frame produced by the game’s simulation and input pipeline.

That distinction matters. If a game renders at 40 FPS and AFMF raises the displayed output substantially, camera motion may look smoother, but the game is still processing input and simulation updates closer to its underlying rendered rate. AFMF can improve perceived fluidity without making the game feel equivalent to a native 80 FPS render.

Artifacts are more likely during rapid camera movement, UI transitions, particles, foliage, thin geometry, and other scenes where motion is difficult to estimate. AMD’s published FPS examples are selected tests using particular games, hardware, settings, resolutions, drivers, and feature combinations; they are not a universal promise that AFMF will double performance.

AFMF’s main advantage is breadth. It works at the driver level rather than requiring a developer to integrate it into each game. AMD lists support for DirectX 11, DirectX 12, Vulkan, and OpenGL titles, subject to the hardware, driver, operating-system, VSync, and display-mode requirements on its official AFMF documentation.

AFMF 2.1 versus earlier versions

The original AFMF had more limited display-mode and API support. AFMF 2 expanded compatibility and introduced improvements to quality and latency behavior, along with tunable controls. AFMF 2.1 adds further optimization and settings, including AI-optimized enhancements on supported Ryzen processors with Radeon graphics.

Current guidance should therefore be based on AFMF 2.1 rather than older AFMF 1 tutorials. AMD’s AFMF 2 announcement described borderless-fullscreen support for RX 7000-series and Radeon 700M products, in addition to exclusive fullscreen support, and reported a latency improvement in a specific Cyberpunk 2077 comparison. That result was an AMD test result under stated conditions, not a universal performance guarantee.

AFMF 2.1 compatibility requirements

Requirement What to check
Graphics hardware Radeon RX 7000-series desktop or mobile GPUs support AFMF 2.1 and borderless fullscreen. RX 6000-series desktop and mobile GPUs support AFMF but are limited to exclusive fullscreen in AMD’s current documentation.
Integrated graphics Supported Ryzen 7000-series processors with Radeon 700M graphics and higher may qualify. Not every Ryzen 7000 processor is supported; AMD excludes selected processors using GCN- or RDNA 2-based graphics. Supported Ryzen AI systems with Radeon graphics may receive AFMF 2.1 enhancements.
Software AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 25.3.1 or newer, according to AMD’s listed requirements.
Operating system Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Game API DirectX 11, DirectX 12, Vulkan, or OpenGL.
VSync VSync must be disabled in both the game and the AMD driver.
Display AMD recommends an AMD FreeSync display, although FreeSync is presented as a recommendation rather than an absolute requirement.

A laptop’s AMD processor does not automatically qualify the system. The graphics architecture, installed driver package, hybrid-GPU configuration, operating system, game presentation, and display mode all affect whether AFMF appears and works correctly. OEM laptop drivers can also expose different controls from a standard AMD package.

How to enable AFMF 2.1

Option 1: Use HYPR-RX

  1. Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition.
  2. Open the Gaming section.
  3. Select the HYPR-RX profile on a supported system.
  4. Confirm that AFMF is included in the resulting feature set for the intended game.
  5. Launch the game in a supported fullscreen or borderless mode.
  6. Use AMD’s overlay or performance metrics to verify that it is active.

HYPR-RX is a one-click profile that can enable several performance features together. It is convenient, but it is not the same as changing only AFMF. If you are troubleshooting, manual per-game activation makes it easier to identify which feature changed the result.

Option 2: Enable it manually

  1. Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition.
  2. Go to Gaming → Graphics for global settings, or select the title under Gaming → Games for a per-game profile.
  3. Enable AMD Fluid Motion Frames.
  4. Disable VSync in both the game and the driver.
  5. Use exclusive fullscreen on RX 6000 hardware. RX 7000-series and newer systems support the documented borderless-fullscreen path.
  6. Restart the game after changing the setting.

A per-game profile is the safer starting point because it prevents AFMF from unexpectedly applying to every title. Menu names can vary by Adrenalin release, language, detected game, and OEM driver.

How to verify that AFMF is working

Do not rely on one FPS number. A game’s own counter may show rendered frames only, while AMD’s overlay or performance metrics may report combined output that includes generated frames. AFMF’s displayed FPS also says little by itself about latency or frame pacing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Disable AFMF and record the game’s native or rendered FPS at the same resolution and quality settings.
  2. Enable AFMF without changing those settings.
  3. Compare the game counter with AMD’s overlay and performance metrics.
  4. Pan the camera slowly and rapidly.
  5. Inspect HUD text, foliage, particles, thin geometry, and fast-moving objects for trails, shimmer, distortion, or judder.
  6. Test input response separately from visual smoothness.

AMD has described using its in-game overlay and Frame Latency Meter to check AFMF status and measure response time. Radeon Anti-Lag may be worth testing where appropriate, but it does not eliminate all frame-generation latency or turn generated frames into native rendered frames.

When AFMF is a good fit

  • The game has no suitable built-in frame-generation option.
  • The base frame rate is reasonably high and stable.
  • You value smoother camera motion more than minimum possible latency.
  • The game uses a supported API and display mode.
  • You can tolerate occasional artifacts.
  • The GPU has enough headroom for frame-generation overhead.

When to turn AFMF off

  • The underlying FPS is low or highly unstable.
  • You play competitive, rhythm, timing-sensitive, or latency-critical games.
  • Ghosting, shimmering, flicker, UI distortion, or judder is obvious.
  • The game already offers better-looking integrated frame generation.
  • Multiple frame-generation systems, frame caps, VSync settings, or hybrid-GPU behavior are conflicting.

There is no universal minimum FPS at which AFMF becomes good or bad. Higher, steadier base FPS generally gives the technology more useful source frames, but the acceptable result depends on the game, display, settings, and player.

Best-practice setup

  • Start with a per-game AFMF profile rather than a global setting.
  • Keep the game’s resolution and quality settings unchanged while comparing AFMF on and off.
  • Disable VSync in both locations as required by AMD’s documentation.
  • Use FreeSync where available and correctly configured, but do not expect it to cure artifacts or latency.
  • Avoid enabling AFMF and the game’s own frame generation simultaneously unless the game and driver documentation specifically support that arrangement.
  • Temporarily disable Radeon Chill and third-party frame limiters while troubleshooting.
  • Prioritize stable frame times and rendered FPS over the largest overlay number.
  • Use Anti-Lag only as a separate latency experiment; evaluate the complete setup rather than assuming it removes frame-generation delay.

Common AFMF problems and fixes

The AFMF option is missing

  1. Confirm that the actual graphics adapter is an eligible Radeon model.
  2. Update to an Adrenalin package meeting AMD’s documented minimum.
  3. Check whether an OEM-customized laptop driver is limiting the controls.
  4. Confirm that the game is running on the intended discrete GPU rather than an unsupported adapter.
  5. On RX 6000 hardware, test exclusive fullscreen.
  6. On RX 7000-series or newer hardware, test supported borderless fullscreen.
  7. Disable VSync in the game and driver.
  8. Remove conflicting per-game profiles or reset the profile to default.
  9. Restart the game after changing AFMF.
  10. If the toggle remains unavailable, reinstall or clean-install the driver.

Not every laptop or hybrid-graphics configuration exposes identical controls, even when the hardware appears broadly eligible.

Ghosting, trails, shimmer, or UI distortion

These defects can result from difficult motion estimation involving fast movement, particles, foliage, thin objects, or a driver-game interaction. Test another AFMF setting if available, a different display mode, and a lower camera speed. Compare AFMF with the game’s native frame generation, or disable frame generation entirely.

Do not blame every artifact on AFMF. Upscaling, anti-aliasing, HDR, frame caps, and the game engine can contribute. Community reports of AFMF 2.1 ghosting are useful troubleshooting leads, but they are anecdotal rather than general performance evidence.

Stutter despite a high FPS number

Check the base FPS and frame-time graph first. Then test Radeon Chill, VSync, FreeSync behavior, third-party caps, simultaneous frame-generation systems, and CPU limitation. A high combined output number can hide uneven source frames or pacing problems.

FPS falls after enabling AFMF

Frame-generation overhead, a changed profile, a limiter, or a driver conflict can outweigh the expected benefit in a particular title. Reset the per-game profile, temporarily disable Chill and third-party limiters, turn off other frame-generation systems, and compare identical resolution and quality settings. Check rendered FPS separately from displayed FPS, then test another game to determine whether the issue is title-specific.

The game feels sluggish

AFMF cannot remove the latency of the underlying rendered frame. A game rendering at 35–45 FPS may look smoother after interpolation while still feeling closer to that base rate in response. For competitive play, stable native frame rate and frame times should take priority over the largest reported FPS value.

AFMF versus in-game frame generation

When a game offers a good implementation of AMD FSR frame generation, it is usually the first alternative worth testing. Integrated frame generation can use engine-provided motion vectors and other information unavailable to a driver-level system. FSR features require developer integration and are available only in selected games and products; see AMD’s official FidelityFX Super Resolution information.

Approach Best use Main limitation
Native rendering Competitive play, timing-sensitive games, or systems with adequate FPS Does not create extra displayed frames.
In-game frame generation Titles with a well-integrated implementation and acceptable image quality Requires developer support and title-specific compatibility.
AFMF 2.1 Supported games without suitable native frame generation Driver-level motion estimation can produce artifacts and less predictable results.

The practical order is simple: try native game frame generation when it looks good; try AFMF when the game lacks a suitable integrated option; use no frame generation when base FPS, pacing, image quality, or latency is unacceptable.

Should AFMF influence a GPU purchase?

AFMF is included in AMD Software; it is not a separate purchase. However, installing the software alone does not make an incompatible GPU support it. Do not buy a graphics card solely for a larger generated-FPS number.

Choose hardware primarily for native performance, VRAM, power characteristics, resolution, game library, and the features you actually use. Radeon RX 7600 XT, RX 7700 XT, RX 7800 XT, and RX 9070-series cards occupy different performance and price positions, and AMD’s historical launch prices are not current retail guarantees. The relevant official product pages are RX 7600 XT, RX 7700 XT, RX 7800 XT, and AMD’s RX 9070-series announcement.

A stronger GPU that delivers better native frame rates is generally a better AFMF foundation than a weaker card purchased only to produce a larger displayed FPS figure. A FreeSync monitor can help synchronize variable output, but refresh range, resolution, connection standard, HDR behavior, and overall display quality matter more than the label alone.

Bottom line

AFMF 2.1 is a useful driver-level fallback, not a universal replacement for native performance or integrated frame generation. If your game lacks a good built-in option and already runs at a stable, playable base frame rate, enable AFMF per game and evaluate smoothness, artifacts, frame pacing, and input response together. If the base FPS is low, the game is competitive, or native frame generation looks better, turn AFMF off.
